Helsinki in winter / Helsinki en invierno / L’hiver à Helsinki

Helsinki covered by white veil

This winter has been a ”different” winter. Why so? Well, cold weather lasted many weeks and when it came a little bit warmer, frost crusted everything. This means that also the smallest branches in trees are white as also statues are.

I walked through Helsinki in many parks, along waterfront and took photos from a skier, from a cute baby sitting in a Laplander’s sled, trees etc. Finally I returned to the plaza of senate where the Helsinki cathedral dominates the view. Before the cathedral there is the monument to Alexander II. It was also heavily frosted and I have never seen it like that.

  2. Every single photo took my breath away. These are the most beautiful photos I have ever seen. Wow… All the photos were fantastic, but I particularly enjoyed the ones with the mother and child in a sleigh.

    • Guess what Preston, I like them also so very much. The child brought to my mind memories dating past 38 years when my son was sitting like this one in photo.

Thank You. I wish to You happy Monday.

  4. Good evening, Matti
about this site, I’m excited again. So much snow, I saw the last time earlier in my childhood and a few days ago. Your photos are fantastic and very natural color shown. The snow-covered trees look very picturesque in the white landscape. I thank you sincerely, that I could look at it. I wish you and Anja all the best for your health and daily ways. I look forward to the next blog site I will visit. Thank you also for your nice comments on my web page.
    Happy Monday, dear greetings Christel

  5. Bonsoir Matti,
    A demain !

This phenomen happens seldom, because the sea in front of Helsinki is warming Helsinki far into winter. Now it was exception due to “extremely” cold period. Sea is a reservoir of warmth and it is giving warm to Helsinki in fall, but in the spring time it is on the contrary. Few kilometres / miles to the North of Helsinki air temperature can be warmer than in Helsinki. When living about 50 kilometres / 31 miles from Helsinki I have had the possibility to make observations during may years. Interesting? Same kind phenomenon is valid concerning the warm of the Gulf Stream. The North Atlantic Current of Gulf Stream is warming “whole Scandinavia” and this is true when comparing air temperature on the East side Atlantic Ocean on same latitude.

Normally the real winter is coming from the winds of North or from the East. When winds are from the West, air is humid and “warm”

      Greetings.

  10. Bonjour Sartenada,
A bientôt

    • Hi Rosh.

Thank You. This winter has been “warm” and very little of snow. Did You know that we have long traditions against cold in Finland? It is:

      Sauna.

Sauna is ideal way to warm and to refresh oneself. Even yet today people do not know what is really and how to use it. Sauna is very popular in Finland and we have Sauna in our apartment f course.

      Have a nice day!

      Comment by Sartenada — February 25, 2014 @ 10:56 | Reply

      • Yes, it seems the weather has been unusual all over the globe. I heard about the Finland sauna, in fact I just finished watching a program on the history channel where a man living in Michigan with Finnish roots had a sauna on his property. He was showing everyone how they had their sauna. His great grandfather first had the land and he built the sauna. It was a great show! Sounds very nice to take that sauna!
