Cuauhtémoc and other tall ships / Cuauhtémoc y otros grandes veleros / Cuauhtémoc et d’autres grands voiliers

In English:

After many years Tall Ships visited Helsinki. Many Tall Ships visited Turku few years ago and then I photographed and visited many of them. Now my main interest was in Cuauhtémoc which is Mexican Tall Ship. The name comes from the last Aztec Emperor Cuauhtémoc who died in 1525. Cuauhtémoc means “eagle descending on its prey”.

The crew was extremely polite and I did find them “jolly fellows”. To me other interesting Tall Ships there was also “Cisne Branco” meaning White Swan from Brazil as well Götheborg from Sweden.

  1. So many ropes. I can see where the expression comes from now – to “learn the ropes.” Beautiful ships!

    • Thank You Anneli. I am happy that people organize these contests and thus old seamanship is preserved from generation to generation.

      Have a great day!

  2. Bonjour Matti,

  8. Those are truly floating works of art!!! The blue/white patchwork flag, the nautical striped sailors’ shirts, the rigging and (I can’t imagine sailing the ocean in such a tiny vessel!!!) the photos next to the cruise ships gives a great perspective of size!!! Beautiful post!!!! Hugs……(Great photo of your wife, also!)

  9. This is great timing for me as we just had a “Tall Ships” event in Duluth that I considered going to see, but when they mentioned that “thousands” of people come to see them I decided to avoid the crowds. So it is nice to see your photos. The weather looks perfect and like everyone was having a great time.

I admire all these carved works of art at the bow and the stern of the ships. And It’s really fine that you had the chance to talk to the people on board of the Cuauhtémoc!

    Have a nice weekend, Matti!

  11. Excellent post. I love the angles of the masts and riggings, the carvings, the sailors, and the climbing sailor and the one descending on a rope. Yikes! The first photo where the tall ship is next to the cruise ship shows a great contrast between ways of crossing the ocean. I also like the one with the ropes and knots around the pegs (I don’t know mariner’s terms, so pardon my ignorance). Of course, since I am quite partial to Mexico, my favorite is the Cuauhtémoc!

      • Yes, I saw. Very nice.
I actually sailed a tall ship into Finland years ago. It was the trip that I made in high school when I decided I wanted to be a ship captain. We sailed the brigantine Phoenix into Helsinki. We went on to Leningrad. I think we might’ve stopped in Turku on the way back. I had to get off in Copenhagen when the term ended. Strange that my college in Texas refused to accept my high school diploma. It was printed on the back of a Russian chocolate bar wrapper. 🙂

    • Hello Lisa.

Thank you. I checked some posts which you have made. There were two surprises – finding a Finnish sail boat – Swan 46 Mk III made in Pietarsaari (Swedish, Jakobstad). Very good! Maybe you know also that in 2010 world’s biggest cruise ship Allure of the Seas was made in Finland, Turku.

I shot photos about it one day before it left for United States:

Allure of the Seas – world’s biggest cruise ship

Another surprise was finding that you visited Canary Islands. If I understand correct, you never visited Gran Canarias and its biggest wonderful town Las Palmas. There a very interesting museum in Las Palmas – Columbus House. Inside there are old maps and scale model of Santa Maria, La Niña, Pinta. I have a post presenting this awesome museum. My post:

      Vacation in Las Palmas 2

      Happy sailing!
