Steam locomotive park / Parque de locomotora de vapor / Parc de locomotive à vapeur / Parque de locomotiva a vapor

In English:

Steam locomotive park in Haapamaki

In this post, I also tell about our hidden tradition / culture- dancing on a dance pavilion (open-air dance) and present one of our unknown, but popular, happy Finnish music played there – Humppa. This amazing small (length 1:15) video shows You the steps of Humppa and it is sung in French, yes You read it correct in French. Finnish singer’s voice is as clear as the nightingales chirp. After seeing it, You may ask in Your mind, why nobody ever told about this when I visited summer Finland and thus I missed a unique experience from Finland.

Haapamäki. The distance from Helsinki is 266.90 km / 165.8 mi to the north. It can be reached many times a day by train from Helsinki with one change. Haapamäki is a small locality, which once was a lively railway intersection, but when the trains started to travel along new tracks, Haapamäki gradually slowed down. It is a population center of Keuruu having less than 1000 residents. The distance between Keuruu and Haapamäki is 16.6 km / 9.98 mi. It has normal social services and some small business firms.

Steam Engine Park is in Haapamäki. This year 2018, it celebrates its 30 anniversary. Park is open only in summer. Sadly many steamers are rusty, which means that they have seen better days. Park offers food, coffee, accommodations etc. Special accommodation is to spend a night in a railroad car. There is also a dance pavilion (open-air dance) with live music on Saturdays. If You never had experienced this kind of dancing, then this is typical Finnish happening for young and old. Yet today there are many tens dance pavilions in Finland. If You are traveled everywhere and experienced everything, but this not, then …

After my photos, I give a link, which tells about unique Finnish tradition. It is incredible and no travel page ever has told about this. Now it is time to inform You about this Finnish “hidden” tradition!

  14. Thanks for showing these old and impressive steam engines! It’s often the problem to maintain these old locomotives. If there had not been quite a lot of people who were prepared to volunteer their time it would even be more difficult to preserve these witnesses of the past. My husband is building models (locomotives, trains as well as ships) as a hobby and he enjoyed it very much to see your today’s photos taken at Steam Engine Park of Haapamäki!

I had a look at your link about social dancing in Finland and I watched the short video about the Humppa! It’s a very cheerful type of music and dancing! A lot of light-footed hopping and jumping! ^^ I try to remember the Finnish expression for women’s turn. Naisten haku …?

What a nice mixture today, Matti! I enjoyed it very much. Thank you!

    Have a nice week!

    Comment by ladyfromhamburg — April 24, 2018 @ 19:26 | Reply

    • Hello Michèle.

Thank You. It was so nice to read Your praising comment. Your husband has fantastic hobbies. My late father, profession “Schumacher” made only one tall ship model. It was the model of Suomen Joutsen (Finnischer Schwan).

      Finnischer Schwan

I loved it very much, but when I was young and moved to Helsinki and a lighting burnt our house soon. All was burnt, Suomen Joutsen and all which I left to my father’s house. I do not have a photo of it, but it stays in my memory rest of my life. The model was 1:100. He made it, because he had bad luck. Suomen Joutsen made many trips in the 30s and once my father was selected among the crew. He became badly ill before the trip and so he missed the trip to South America. He mourned it many years. This was the reason, why he decided to make the model of Finnischer Schwan in the 50s.

I am glad also about it that You looked the video and read the link telling our social dancing. Naisten haku was hard to me, because, I was afraid if no Lady wanted dance with me. Happily there were some every time. I could make a post about Suomen Joutsen someday, if You are interested in it.

      Comment by Sartenada — April 25, 2018 @ 08:35 | Reply

      • Sorry to hear about the lighting which burnt the house! And it’s a great pity that the model burnt, too …
I could imagine that apart from myself also many of your other readers would be interested in this story as well as in the “life” of the Suomen Joutsen! Even if you don’t possess a photo of the model built by your father, you alternatively could show a photo of the ship today and tell a bit about the Swan e. g. since the ship arrived in Finland. As I learnt it became a museum ship at Turku but was overhauled in autumn 2016 at Naantali. Is the ship back at Aurajoki/Turku meanwhile?

        • Thank You Michèle for the great idea. I will do it. When talking about model ships, do you remember my post presenting Ships inside churches? I think that Your husband could be interested in to get some ideas when seeing them. Matti.

    I love trains and railroads.
You know that many Japanese people love them. We take many pictures, we enjoy to ride trains.
When I visited to Helsinki, I enjoyed riding trams, and went to the station to watch many “VR” .
I am very excited to see your steam locomotive pics.
Thank you very much to up your wonderful weblog today, too.
    Kiitos 🙂

    • Hello Misa.

How nice that You commented my post. If You will once more visit Finland, then You can take a short train ride to Hyvinkää (45 minutas). Here is links to its page and to Wikipedia:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_Railway_Museum

I am sure that You would love it. Museum is very near to the railwaystation.

P.S. Can You write here how to say in Japanese? Marimekko is in that direction. At same time, I show it with my hand. This is why many Japanese tourists coming from Itäkeskus metro station search where to find Marimekko.

      • Thank you for the museum information. I’d like to go to there very much, I hope I will so.

You ask me how to say in Japanese when you teach the way to the Japanese who goes to Marimekko, yes, I propose to say like this.

” Marimekko wa achira ni ari masu”
(At the same time you point to that direction.)

It mean “Marimekko is over there” in English.

I am glad to hear that you are very kind to Japanese, when I visites to Finland, I was kindly taught the way to the Finnish people many time.

        Kiitos oikein paljon! 🙂

  20. Wow! What a lot of grand steam engines! 😀 Are any of these running? Old trains are popular here in the UK and many are up and running for tourists and sometimes they put on theme days for outings. I enjoyed watching the dancing video, with its lovely lively music and full of energy. Social dancing is still popular in Sweden but there isn’t anything really like it here in England (alas!) An interesting and informative post with great photos, Sartenada!

Oh, that is so dear place to me. I’ve been many times in “Haapamäen höyryveturipuisto”, (mainly in my childhood and younger years). That’s nice place where usually weekend’s is performing good artists and also there is good food!

As you may remember, we have a summer cottage at Keuruu, so that’s close to this place and that’s why we have visited there many times in the summertime.

I have not told that we have spent few nights in Keurusselkä Hotel and it was in March 2007. We skied from there to the center of Keuruu. Thank You very much for Your comment.

    • Hello Heidi.

Thank You. When being young boy, I worked for local paper factory and my job was onboard of locomotive as brakeman. When building railway man needed a draisine / handcar for short movements and carrying some things. It was very useful. At those days we udsed our hands, not machines! 🙂

      Have a wonderful day!

  32. The video was wonderful! It is a thing of beauty to watch people who can dance well … I’m definitely not one of them 🙂 I’m confused about the French song though. Is it just a coincidence that this video is shot dancing to French music?

Great photos of the trains – in spite of the rust. I noticed that some of the engines have side panels on them. I’ve never seen that before. Do you happen to know what the purpose is?

    Comment by Joanne Sisco — May 30, 2018 @ 15:06 | Reply

    • Hello Joanne.

      First music.

Thank You commenting. This music was a Finnish Song sung by a Finnish Lady in French. Humppa exists exists in Finland only! In Finland, we have very rich traditional music culture. We have Jenkka, Waltz and Tango. In 1968, our special type Jenkka was popular in many countries in the World. For example, I heard it sung in Portuguese in Brazil n 70s. It was called Letkis or Letkajenkka, but people living abroad translated it in Letskiss. Here is Letkajenkka from 1968:

Did You know that in Finland every summer we have Tangomarkkinat (Tango markets) is the world’s oldest tango festival. We have our own Tangos. Here is presentation of this year (English)

      http://www.tangomarkkinat.fi/in-english/

Jenkkka dance from 2001 (example how to dance):

      Our most popular Tango is

      Satumaa (fairy tale) tango

Our most popular Waltz is Kesäillanvalssi (summer evening’s Waltz)

      Of course we have:

      Samba in Helsinki

On next week’s Saturday is the next one. My daughter is participating in it, so she told to me.

      Second trains.

I do not know the meaning os side panel. I worked during five summers in the locomotion of local paper factory as a brakeman. One possibility is that they are for the safety of a person who connects wagons. On moving train it was a “dangerous” job.
