I love the misty background. It really adds to the pictures. Everything else is a blur, like it doesn’t exist, except for, in that moment, the swans. Nice.
Comment by laceduplutheran — October 23, 2014 @ 10:09 |
Hi Matt.
Yes indeed – blur is keyword in this case. The photo I took in Mikkeli by the lake Saima and on the opposite site the strand at the distance about 400 meters. In winter we walk across the lake on ice and it shortens our walking trip to the center by 10 minutes. Here is my old post in which You can see in the first photo our strand (swans were in this strand) and home house.
Walking on frozen lake

Hi Matti, those are wonderful. We see the trumpeter swan here, it looks very similar. They like to find open water sources in the winter and that is where to spot them. They are elegant.

These are wonderful. In Alaska, where we live, the swans stop off for refueling in the fall and the spring, to and from their migratory destinations. It always means that the seasons are changing. They are beautiful creatures.

Very nice to see the whole swan familiy with their four young birds. I hope they will return safely in spring to say hello to you. ^^ Perhaps they intend to spend the winter time in Germany – at the Baltic Sea or North Sea or even more in the south at the larger lakes like the Lake of Constance.
We don’t have such a lot of Whooper Swans (“Singing swans” – Cygnus cygnus) here, most of ours are the Mute Swans (those with a little hump on their beaks – Cygnus olor) and they often stay but try to reach the coasts during the winter season.
Best wishes and have a nice rest of the week!
Michèle

Thank You for Your comment. Swans are indeed beautiful. It was interesting that the “head” of the family observed around meaning to protect his family. In our local newspaper there was interesting story about male and female swans. They are dating 2 or 3 years before they start family. I find this thing very cool among animals!

Hei!
Is the lake Saimaa located near the neighborhood of your house?
You are so lucky you could take pictures of beautiful swans. Thank you for your pictures of lovely birds.
Kiitos!
Comment by Misa — November 3, 2014 @ 16:12 |
Hi Misa.
Yes. The Lake Saimaa is located about 20 meters from our house. From our balcony we have good sight over it. Saimaa is big lake and there are three towns which surround it and every one of them is beautiful in their own ways.
First: Lappeenranta and sand statues.
It very beautiful town and worth for a visit.
Second: Savonlinna and its Medieval castle of Olavinlinna.
This town is must to visit when in Finland. The castle is incredible.
Third: Summer in Mikkeli.
My home town Mikkeli is small, but its charm is having beautiful wooden houses here and there. Mikkeli offers wonderful possibilities to make walking tours and many walking routes run alongside the shores of Saimaa. For example from our house start nice walking path which follows the lake Saimaa. On this route there is possible to stop for swimming or just to sit on a bench and listen to the birds singing. Next year I’ll show how beautiful the Blue Saimaa can be when walking on its shores.
