In English:
When driving here and there in Finland, I suddenly saw swans on a field. It seemed that they had a “coffee break time” there before continuing to the North. Unfortunately, my photography caused them to break their pause and got them to continue their journey towards the north to desert areas. All photos except the last one are from 2009 and the last one I took thru my car’s windshield while my wife drove in autumn 2015. Guess, if my reaction time was rapid, when seeing them, because they came from behind the forest!

How interesting and what a great photo opportunity! I have seen many swans by the seaside but none on a field! I guess they need their rest too 🙂
Comment by Suvi — May 25, 2016 @ 07:26 |
Hello Suvi.
Actually, I see very seldom in pure nature swans. Normally in lakes, but not on a field indeed. Thank You leaving Your comment.
Have a wonderful day!

Wow. I love those whooper swans. In helsinki mute swan is more common than hooper swan. I have seen some of them few years back in the swamp area of viikki. they are beautiful.
Comment by somdattadeb — May 25, 2016 @ 08:01 |
Hello Somdattadeb.
Oh, I did not think if they are whooper or mute swans, but You are right. When moving back to Helsinki, I must visit to Viikki also. Thank You commenting.

Swans are so beautiful and cute, aren’t they? In Hokkaido ,Japan, we can see them from October to April. It’s quite moving that they travel long distance. Your photoes are also fantastic.
I’m also impressed by “Cackling Goose” in the forth picture from the top!
Comment by superkamui — May 25, 2016 @ 08:38 |
Hello Watayuki.
Yes, it is amazing how long trip they fly. This was exceptional that they were on a field, not in water. Probably they were hungry. So, You noticed the goose among them. 🙂

Beautiful birds, indeed. I’m also fortunate enough to have ‘a’place of swans’ not too far away!

Hi Seenorway.
I see so many swans very seldom in the nature. I think that I was lucky. Thank You.
Have a great day!
Comment by Sartenada — May 25, 2016 @ 13:06 |
They do have special places which they favour. Once you find such a place, you’ll always find swans!
In a particulat spot in the river near by, there are very seldom less than 15-20 !

The figure that a swan flies is very beautiful. Which month is it in Finland that a swan leaves for the north?
Comment by wakasahs15th — May 25, 2016 @ 09:29 |
Hello Wakasahs15.
Thank You. Well, they migrate in April / May. These photos I took in May many years ago. My personal opinion is that birds know better than weather prophets do, when it starts to warm. 🙂

Great to see the swans during their little coffee break time and on their way to the North! I particularly like the very last photo which you took separately, Matti. I think it’s because of the light/shadow and the silhouettes …
Your swans in the meadow are definitely whooper swans. The second photo allows a close look at their very specific beak (smaller, more a yellow than an orange colour in combination with black and you also won’t find any hump). Even the more upright positiion of their necks (only moderately curved when walking) seen from the back is kind of a distinguishing feature.
I liked your post very much. Thanks for showing!
Have a nice evening!
