I have made few cruises in my life. My first one was from Helsinki to Copenhagen (Denmark) when I was 16 years old. After it cruises to Stockholm (Sweden), Visby (Sweden) Tallinn (Estonia), Rostock (Germany), Travemünde (Germany), Santorin (Greece), Symi, (Greece), Capri (Italia), Praia da Rocha (Portugal) James Bond Island (Thailand), Nile cruise (Egypt). Nile cruise is the best I have ever made. I have also made some lake cruises in Finland. Summer 2013 from Mikkeli to Astuvansalmi Rock paintings was the best cruise made in Finland.
The all-day cruise starts onboard of M/S Jaarli from the harbor of Mikkeli cruising on the lake Saimaa. Its culmination are Rock paintings of Astuvansalmi in Ristiina. The cruise includes also a short show of Astuvansalmi Amazons and the lunch in front of the rock paintings. When on cruise man has possibility to observe our summer cottage life on the shores of Lake Saimaa. Small houses which are on the shore are in fact mainly Saunas. Our summer culture on lakeshores consists two necessities own Sauna and piece of own beach. There people spend their weekends and summer vacations. On the Mikkeli regions there are about 10000 summer cottages.
Landscapes on cruise show how beautiful cliffs can be on shores of Saimaa. Astuvansalmi rock paintings consist of about 80 paintings. Officially they were found in 1968 by the archaeologist Pekka Sarvas, but local people have found them earlier. Rock paintings present elks, human beings, hands, boats, fishes, dogs, shamans etc. Their age varies from 3300-2500 BC. Rock paintings which are painted with red ochre are high on the bedrock even at the height of 10 meters /38.8 feet from lake level. This means that in historic days water level was much higher. From the lake in front of rock paintings have been found amber jewelries.
When approaching rock painting from the lake man can see human face profile. My guess is that this face figure has inspired artists of the past. Among those Rock paintings there is a red Stop sign which meaning I wonder.
I grouped my photos this way: After first 4 photos I show summer cottages, then some lake views. Next boats and kayaks on the Lake Saimaa, following with Amazons which were not allowed to shoot photos during their show. Finally rock paintings culminating to the face profile in the rock.
So if You’ll visit Finland someday remember that there is life outside Helsinki. If You visit Mikkeli, then do not forget this cruise!

Verano 2013 de Mikkeli para es posible de Astuvansalmi que fue hasta hoy el mejor crucero realizado en Finlandia.

La croisière en été 2013 de Mikkeli à Astuvansalmi pour voir les peintures rupestres était le meilleur croisière faite en Finlande.
La croisière d’une journée commençait à bord du M / S Jaarli du port de Mikkeli faisant la croisière sur le lac Saimaa. Son point culminant sont les peintures d’Astuvansalmi à Ristiina. La croisière comprend également un court spectacle de Amazones d’Astuvansalmi et le déjeuner devant les peintures rupestres. Quand en croisant il est possible d’observer notre vie de chalet d’été sur les rives du lac Saimaa. Petites maisons qui sont sur la rive sont en réalité principalement saunas. J’ai regroupé mes photos de cette façon: Après 4 premières photos, je montre les chalets d’été, alors quelques vues sur le lac. Prochainement bateaux à rames et kayaks sur le lac Saimaa, suivant d’amazones qui n’ont pas été autorisées à photographier lors de leur spectacle. Finalement les peintures rupestres culminant au profil de visage dans la roche.
Donc, si vous visiterex la Finlande un jour souvenez-Vous qu’il y a la vie en dehors de Helsinki. Si vous aller visiter Mikkeli quelquefois, alors n’oubliez pas de cette croisière!

The scenery along the water is so pretty, I can understand why those who have houses there will spend as much time as possible there!
The rock paintings are fascinating, especially knowing the approximate ages of them. There are some near here too, but I have no idea of thsir ages. They also used the ochre color and some of the figures look similar.

Thank You. Full life – well so it might be. My wife and I were very busy when working, but now when both of us are retired we try to find together things to be done. Last Saturday we visited the exhibition of Terracotta warriors in Tampere, Finland. It was awesome exhibition and we were honored in Finland to present these Terracotta solders and many other things involved with their lives.

In fact, about rock paintings are spread around all over our (little) planet… but every place is quite different then the other. I never was in Saimaa, but I hope I still have few years left 🙂

Wonderful scenery with water, cliff and birch trees, classic cabins, docks and boats. And great portraits. A fabulous looking trip, complete with lunch on the water! I love Finland, so beautiful. 🙂

It’s so beautiful and green. I would like to have a go in one of those kayaks. It’s a fun way to explore lakes. We’ve been on the James Bond Island cruise in Thailand too.
