In English:

Tall ships in Kotka

Tall ships visited this year (July) in two places in Finland: in Kotka and In Turku. Because we have seen them in Turku and Helsinki, our decision to go to Kotka, was understandable. Last time we visited Mexican Tall ship Cuauhtémoc. This time we visited few ships, but Brazilian Tall ship Cisne Branco (White Swan) and Portuguese Tall ship Santa Maria Manuela from Madeira were the subject of our interest.

We started in good time our road trip to Kotka, because we wanted to park our car easily. Wise decision, because there were already lines queueing the parking lot. Distance from Helsinki to Kotka is 133km / 83mi. This time I found interesting figureheads. I show them in the beginning of this post.

  8. I was so interested to read this post and view your photographs as it brought back such fond memories of our visit as well. I really love how you have captured the figureheads at the helm of the ships and the ropes. You are very talented in searching out such detail, I like how one rope is knotted whilst another is just curled round. It is also interesting to read how we both attend the same event and report on it in our own ways. It has been a pleasure to read this post and view your photos Matti. I hope you have a pleasant week. M.

  16. Beautiful fotos of fascinating ships! I remember your former blog posts when you visited Turku and Helsinki, Matti. Georgeous as well!

It’s interesting to see the details like figureheads, ropes and these different thongs (?). I recognized some ships that visited Hamburg on the occasion of one of our annual port festivals, for example the Russian tall (and training) ship “Kruzenshtern” or the “Fr. Chopin”, a ship I once discovered in Kiel (during the “Kieler Woche”). Nice to see them again visiting now Kotka in Finland!

Thanks for showing your great foto souvernirs! I hope your enjoyed being on board of the “Cisne Branco” and the “Santa Maria Manuela”!

    Best regards from Hamburg!

    • Hello Michèle.

Thank You for Your praising comment. My wife noticed those ropes and thongs and I figureheads. Three eyes see more than two eyes! 🙂 Many same ships visit same harbors where they were earlier. Every time it is a great joy to see them. We could not visit every ship, because there was crew rest and we came “too early”. 🙂

It was also a great joy to ” portugiesisch sprechen” with the crew of “Cisne Branco” and the “Santa Maria Manuela”. 🙂

      All the best to You.

  23. Love your blog! We spent 6 months in Finland in 2005. My husband had a Fulbright at the University in Oulu. We both love Finland and the Finns. I will come back and explore more of your photos. They are beautiful. I’m so glad to have found your blog!

    • Hello Sarah.

Six month is so long time, that You have an excellent idea about Finland. When young, I worked in Spain 4½ months and learnt Spanish there as a child learns to speak. 🙂

Finland has changed since 2005 and Oulu also. Helsinki is changing its faces so fast that it is incredible. In Oulu there is now construction boom meaning that from the window of our vacation home we can see six cranes and some buildings are tall in Finnish scale. ) Thank You for Your kind comment.

      Happy new week.

Matti
