Hobbyhorses / Caballitos de palo/ Chevaux de bâton / Cavalinhos de Pau

In English:

Hobbyhorses – booming hobby in Finland.

Hobbyhorse in Finnish “keppari” is much cheaper hobby than riding horses. It was a sunny Saturday in Helsinki in May, when I saw for the first time hobbyhorses live. What are hobbyhorses? They are stick horses with a stick and head. Heads are decorated spectacularly. Where to obtain a hobbyhorse? Hobbyhorses are sold in department stores, but many enthusiasts do them themselves. How many enthusiasts there are in Finland? The number is about 10000 varying between the ages of 10 and 18 and they are nearly all girls.

Is this a joke? No, because there are hold National Finnish Hobbyhorse Championship Games every year in which participants simulate traditional equestrian events, like dressage and show jumping. After photos I give some video links which show that hobbyhorsing is a challenging type.

My and my wife’s photos show future champions of hobbyhorsing – small lovely kids.

Blogin käytettävyys on tärkeä lukijoiden kannalta! Muuten tosi hauskat nuo keppihevosten mestaruuskilpailut! Hyvää päivänjatkoa teille!

  9. The photos are great, and the’ horses’ are OK – as a ‘plaything’,that is, but – when people arrange competitions with this charade, it becomes rather stupid, I think!
I know it costs a lot of money to stable a horse, but still . . . !
(I could give it an all together different name, but I won’t! )

What a nice surprise that You have had hobbyhorses. These hobbyhorses are much beautiful than those which are sold, because many young girl want to decorate them themselves and thus they learn sewing for example at the same time. There few videos which teach how to make a hobbyhorse.

  17. Oh, that’s funny, Matti! Although I knew about hobbyhorses and actually I remember my own simple wooden one which I loved a lot when I was a small child, I didn’t know that such cute horses with cuddlesome heads and very lovely young equestrians are “en vogue” again. No idea about the existence of competitions or the fact that young “riders” participate in a kind of challenge! Seems they enjoyed it very much. It’s nice to see that such simple toys which do not have to be expensive can bring such a lot of joy and animate children to be outside or to improve their skills (motor skills, social behaviour etc.) while playing.

I enjoyed this post very much! Thanks for your and Anja’s photos of this event.
    Have a nice Ascension Day!

    • Hello Michèle.

Thank you very much for your praising comment. When reading these comments, it is amazing that many visitors have had their own hobbyhorse and memories from their childhood. Once in winter in Oulu, we saw three girls with their hobbyhorses, but we did not thought any more the matter. Today it was in Helsinki half a sunny day, but windy. We visited the area on which there will be built (2018-2025) the longest bridge in Finland connecting the Center of Helsinki and Laajasalo. I have plan to shoot photos from it every now and then.

Happy Ascension Day to You and yours. Matti
