Unknown Helsinki2 / Helsinki desconocida2 / Helsinki Inconnu2 / Helsinki desconhecida2

In English:

Laajasalo – the biggest island of Helsinki and Helsinki’s 49th district in eastern Helsinki

Part 2.

Visiting Laajasalo (Degerö in Swedish) is easy. Take metro which goes to Itäkeskus or Myllypuro. Hop off at Herttoniemi subway station. Walk out of subway station and take some of these buses: 84 – Gunillankallio, 85 – Jollas , 88 and 88B – Kaitalahti and Kruunuvuorenranta, 89 – Yliskylä. There are other bus routes, but I suggest to You these routes. You can hop off anytime or at final stop. Where You decide to hop off, start walking. As soon as possible, choose a path. Everywhere on the island, there are cycling and walking paths. Selecting path, they give to You an excellent way to explore the island. Getting lost – no, because every path lead to some road and on roads there is traffic. When returning all the busses are marked with sign Herttoniemi(M).

The nature varies from well-kept parks to rocks and small forests. The building style vary from apartment house to detached houses. There are also semidetached houses. The architecture varies depending in which decades they are built. Some houses have beautiful gardens. The best of Laajasalo is its nature. Depending where Your walking tour takes, You can imagine that You are in the jungle on some areas. We love taking our walking tours wandering along the seaside paths. The island is not big, because You walk from the farthest place in an hour and ten minutes to Herttoniemi metro station, but enough big to explore its beauty and variety.

In the middle of Laajasalo, there is a place called Yliskylä, bus 89, the quite new two-storied shopping center called Saari (island). It is nice place where You can enjoy in all peace your coffee with some yummy. I suggest!. It offers of course everything for residents. Coffee shops and restaurants are of high quality and they offer a nice place to sniff the atmosphere on the island. If You want walk from Saari shopping center to Herttoniemi, it takes about 20 minutes walk. Well, there is a huge park, which I recommend, on the way and it is worth for a visit. Everywhere on the island there are also rentable city bikes.

Welcome and start Your adventure!

Parte 2.

This area is not visited normally by tourists which visit Helsinki. I wanted to show a different Helsinki for those who has adventurous mind to explore my “unknown” Helsinki. Fox was under our window Because this is an island, the sea is around having nice paths nearly everywhere. Thank You leaving Your comment.

Thank You leaving Your kind comment and loving the Island where I live yet few months. It would be lovely if You someday in the future could visit my county! I have visited Tokyo in 1970.

Finnair has many non-stop flights between Helsinki and Japan: Helsinki – Tokyo 9 h. 20 mins, Osaka 9 h. 35 mins, Nagoya 9 h. 20 mins, Fukuoka 9 h. 30 mins and Sapporo with one technical landing 13 h. 35. Flight times are shorter from Japan to Helsinki, due to rotating globe.

      Have good day!

Thank You. I showed a photo of rentable bikes in the first part. Here is a photo:

      City bikes in Helsinki

Helsinki offers excellent biking possibilities. There are 1200 km cycleways in Helsinki. Rentable City bikes are everywhere. In Helsinki transporting bikes in busses are not allowed, but in trains and in metro, yes. In metro there are special areas for bikes. Helsinki has only one metro line which forks at both ends. Laajasalo is near to the center of Helsinki. The distance is about 11 km.

We have also many possibilities to explore our country. One of them is to bike 200 km route passing on our archipelago. Here is translation of a Finnish page presenting this gorgeous route:

      Arcipelago road

      Happy and safe travels!

  21. This is our kind of day trip, well away from the usual tourist destinations. Thanks for including all the transport information too. It’s handy to know that. Lovely photos!

    • Hello Carol.

Thank You. Well, by metro from the center of Helsinki, it takes about 10 minutes to Herttoniemi metro station and about the same time to this Island depending where to hop off.

      Have a wonderful day!

I am glad that You made a question. Well, its purpose is simple: Preventing cars passing on the bridge, which is intended only for walkers and bikers.

  28. Hello Matti, I enjoyed your second post about the unknown Helsinki as much as the first one! Again it’s fascinating to have this combination of still city but also a pure nature and (as always in Finland, which is great) a lot of water!
Thanks for presenting Laajasalo and your photographic impressions even of different seasons!

    • Hello Michèle.

Thank You leaving so kind words. I am glad that You took a look at this post. We walk nearly every day on this island and have taken occasionally photos from this area. I hope that someday somebody will tell, I visited there, but it is Utopia, I know.

In Autumn, we will leave this island and move to Espoo, just outside of Helsinki. Now it takes about 30 minutes to travel to the center of Helsinki by using bus & metro. From our future home, we will reach the center of Helsinki in 13 minutes by train. We will visit from time to time here and checking how the building of the bridge (starts in 2021) from Helsinki is progressing. When the 1200 meters long bridge is ready in the future (2026), many visitors will visit this “unknown” Helsinki and thus finding it. Then it is “known” Helsinki. 🙂

      All the best,
      Matti

      • You are planning to move again later this year?Matti, I just had a look at the map to search for your new home town and discovered Espoo west of Helsinki.. And I noticed there is a river traversing … So Anja and you will still be close to the water. ^^

        • Hello Michèle.

Yes, this true. The main reason to it is, well, I try to say it kindly, without offending anyone: “where You live, You can choose the place, but neighbors You cannot choose”! 🙂

Very near, only from steps from our future home, there is a brook. There are steps and a small area for recreations to sit and enjoy the life.

Because You showed so much interest in our future home are, I give three links telling more and the last one shows it very nicely.

    • Hello Jet.

How nice it was this Friday morning to open my Computer and read Your praising comment. I am very glad and appreciate it. Showing seasons, gives a wider view of this island, I think. As You saw in one picture, we have a lot of snow in winter here because one car was nearly totally covered by snow and its brand was impossible to see. Thank You.

      Happy upcoming weekend!
