Lesser-known Helsinki – Borough Puu-Vallila

Do you like places filled with tourists, or do you enjoy places where you can just walk around in some peace and quiet? Want to sense the ambience, admire old architecture, think about how people lived in the area long time ago and observe how they live today? If your answer is yes, then your choice is Puu-Vallila.

Puu-Vallila is a borough quite near to the downtown of Helsinki. It was built in the 1920s and is situated between the streets of Mäkelänkatu and Hämeentie. On the are there are about 10000 inhabitants living in wooden houses. You can easily reach it by bus, tram and metro. At the end, I give a link to Helsinki city transport. We went by metro leaving off at Sörnäinen Metro station. Then we walked about one kilometer along the Mäkelänkatu street on the left side looking for wooden houses – was a cinch.

Puu-Vallila is a peaceful area. In the middle of it, there is a rock and on the top, there is a panoramic view over the area. The rock is easy to reach, no climbing, but just walking. When strolling around, You have possibility to peek into the courtyards.

Puu-Vallila es un barrio bastante cerca del centro de Helsinki. Fue construido en la década de 1920 y se encuentra entre las calles de Mäkelänkatu y Hämeentie. En la zona hay unos 10000 habitantes que viven en casas de madera. Se puede llegar fácilmente en autobús, tranvía y metro. Al final, le dará un enlace al transporte de la ciudad de Helsinki. Fuimos en metro saliendo en la estación de metro Sörnäinen. Luego caminamos aproximadamente un kilómetro por la calle Mäkelänkatu en el lado izquierdo en busca de casas de madera – fue pan comido.

Puu-Vallila est un arrondissement assez proche du centre-ville d’Helsinki. Il a été construit dans les années 1920 et se situe entre les rues de Mäkelänkatu et de Hämeentie. Environ 10000 habitants vivent dans des maisons en bois. Vous pouvez facilement vous y rendre en bus, tram et métro. À la fin, je donnerai un lien vers les transports de la ville d’Helsinki. Nous sommes allés en métro en sortant à la station de métro Sörnäinen. Ensuite, nous avons marché environ un kilomètre sur le côté gauche dans la rue Mäkelänkatu, à la recherche de maisons en bois – c’était du gâteau.

Puu-Vallila est un quartier paisible. Au milieu, il y a une petite butte rocheuse et au sommet, il y a une vue panoramique sur la région. La butte est facile à atteindre, pas d’escalade, mais juste simplement marcher. Lorsque vous là flânent, vous avez la possibilité de jeter un coup d’œil dans les cours.

I love the old-style wooden houses that have managed to survive. We were fortunate enough to stay in one in Turku back in 2016.

I thought I was very familiar with Helsinki but I haven’t walked around here. The old wooden houses are charming and the scenery is typical Finnish. Thank you for posting such nice photos Matti.

  We both have known this area since our childhood. I lived to the west of it within a kilometer and Anja to the east about half a mile from it.   There was a big repair about ten years ago. Sheet metal roofing is a durable and great choice. I think, that in town, this is the best. On countryside brick roofs in detached houses are popular. My late father had sheet metal roof and it was durable and practical. The snow came down quickly so there was no need to shovel it. The load capacity of the roof with snow load for detached houses in minimum is 60–100 kg/m2 or 132.3-220.4/ 1076ft². In many cases it is triple. The angle of the roof corner is determinative. Soy de las personas que prefiere los lugares sin demasiada gente, mucho aire libre y ambientes relajados, así que esta zona que nos muestras me parece ideal.

Les maisons en bois coloré réchauffent le coeur . Ce quartier doit être résidentiel car il n’y a pas beaucoup de monde dans les rues
Sur quelques photos on voit ton épouse se tenat sur une zone rocheuse . Je me demande si cette roche est une ancienne lave volcanique ou du granite . Tu m’ incites à revoir mes connaissances sur la géologie du nors de l’ Zurope.

  - Merci Matti pour toutes les traductions des articles de Wikipedia sur la géologie de la Finlande . C ‘ est passionnant et j’ ai l’ impression de revivre ma jeunesse à l’ université où j’ étudiais la biologie et la géologie . La Finlande et les pays baltes font partie d’un des plus vieux socles montagneux de l’ hémisphère nord. Merci encore pour ta gentillesse. Je crois que je vais étudier à nouveau la question en relisant mes vieux livres de géologie .

,Matti, I mean, the Baltic field whom I speak in my comment is made with very old tectonised rocks ( archean or precambrian age ) totally eroded and covered by sediment more recent ( Cambrian ). No recent mountains : only the basis of very old mountains.

Hello Sartenada, I enjoyed your photos of the district of wooden houses very much. An Eesti woman recently said in a newspaper article that the colorful wooden houses of her native island help to overcome the darkness of winter. I can imagine, it would be similar in Puu-Vallila. I am saddened that I didn’t know of this neighborhood when we visited your country recently. We were not far in Punavuori district and could have gone there easily by tram. I am looking forward to seeing many more of your Suomi valokuvia. Kind regards!

  Thank you for your kind comment. We have similar areas on our coastal line and more colorful. I am glad that you visited my country! The timing was a little bit too late, because summer was over. Finland is at its best in mid-summer. Then days are long or no days, only white nights, because sun is shining during the night. Cruising on some of our lakes in mid-summer night is an experience. Because we live in the north, we have real winter which is beautiful. Then Lapland (northern most part of Finland) offers unique experiences. Here are three of them.
  
  At the Arctic Circle, nearby by the town Rovaniemi:

  In the town of Kemi, there is world’s biggest snow castle. It is not snow castle, but it has ice bar, ice restaurant, snow chapel and possibility to spend a night inside it. Here is my collection of photos:

  The town Oulu, south of the Arctic Circle offers once in the winter everyman’s reindeer race. The race is free to everybody and it is free. This race is once in the lifetime experience:

  - Good morning, thank you for your suggestions, I shall enjoy your posts. We purposely visited Helsinki in September because we don’t like the tourist crowds during the summer month. The more muted hues of early Fall are very beautiful as well. We would love to return to Finland and see more of its countryside, especially the lakes and northern regions.
