We went on a road trip and met reindeers
Background information.
I know that the title is not the best, but I wanted to point out that during this road trip to the northern parts of Finland, we met reindeers everywhere! The explanation for this is that the area belongs to the northeastern reindeer herding area which is larger than the northwestern area. In 2019, there were 4461 reindeer smashes although due to modern technique to warn about collisions of reindeer. This is so called the reindeer alarm application called in Finnish Porokello. Cons of Porokello (personal opinion): Gives a false feeling of security. Overall ratings of this application are for and against based on the user experiences. Many oncoming cars blinked their headlights to warn about reindeer – it worked great!
General information.
The length of our trip was 2413km / 1499mi. It lasted 10 nights / 11 days. We spent one week in a rented summer cottage by the lake Polojärvi in the north. It was a fully equipped two-storied round log house and its jetty was very cool to sit in it in the afternoon and evenings. Silence was palpable. No sounds of a motorboats or personal watercrafts from the lake disturbed the peace! We visited also Kuusamo, Arctic Circle, Suomussalmi, Kemijärvi (two nights) and one night in Iisalmi on the return trip. On the way we drove 783km / 487mi straight to our destination.
Refutation of that reindeers eat only reindeer lichen. This what I have been taught. In practice we saw that they eat various green plants and their delicacy is fireweed or great willowherb known also rosebay.
Were there a lot of mosquitoes? Not so much! It was amazing because it was claimed in the south! Temperature varied between 15°C / 59°F to 26°C / 79°F. Rainy days: one day partly rain. Some cloudy days yes. General feeling: Successful vacation. Photos taken about 800. Pros: Pure nature, nearby lake, friendly cute reindeer, row boat, gorgeous jetty, peaceful place, own peace, hiking possibilities at 4km / 2.5mi. Cons: car needed, nearest place of shopping at 48km / 30mi.

C’est ce qu’on appelle l’application d’alarme de rennes appelée en finnois Porokello. Inconvénients de Porokello (mon opinion personnelle): Donne un faux sentiment de sécurité. Les estimation globale de cette application sont pour et contre basées sur les expériences de l’utilisateurs. De nombreuses voitures venant en sens inverse ont clignoté leurs phares mettent en garde contre les rennes – cela a très bien fonctionné!

What a great trip you had and the weather was nice all the time. Reindeers are a real danger on the road, as you said to blink lights is the best way to tell others of reindeers. Our Lapland is amazing.

Once here in Southern Finland, one driver on a rainy night, saved our lives by blinking lights. A huge moose was standing on a highway and we didn’t see it at all.

Great story. I think that moose is Finland’s most dangerous animal. Once on the way to my father’s house with my two children, a moose ran fast in front of the hood. Braking in panic, although it was too late. After that, my hands trembled at the steering wheel.

How beautiful. I love that cottage you were in and the surroundings. What better holiday than peaceful, tranquil with nature and animals round you. I would happily follow. There is a lot of driving involved, however it is well worth it I can see. I guess the roads are not overcrowded. I really need to go to Finland and see it for myself.

Your pictures look just enough like our north woods for me to see why my grandparents came here (northern Wisconsin in the US) from Finland. Here, there is a device people mount on their car that is supposed to emit a sound to scare deer off the road. Like your app, I’ve heard mixed reports – mostly that it doesn’t work.

On lit avec plaisir ton compte-rendu de ce voyage en Finlande du Nord. La végétation est belle : j’ai vu les épilobes , les bouleaux . Le lac et son eau claire sont attractifs. . Ce chalet en bois est bien accueillant, comme les rennes !

Such a vacation would be a dream come true for me. Only nature around, serenity, peace, the lake, the animals. One with nature. Yes, a dream to recharge and remember what life really is about. Btw. the temps are much higher than I had them expected to be up there and you must have been really lucky with the weather. The reindeer are simply stunning and gorgeous. What majestic creatures they are. Thank you for sharing the link to your post with me. Over the past few years, the northern part of Europe has started to intrigue me more and more. We have been to Sweden for a week, traveling around. But I would like to make it to Finnland and Norway too. My parents went to Finnland and told me about the mosquitos… lol

Thank you. We love them, but normally we have seen them in winter. Nearby the town Rovaniemi, there is the Arctic Circle. It offers reindeer rides, meeting Santa, even in summer and there is Eleanor Roosevelt’s log cabin at the Arctic Circle. Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 – 1962) visited there in 1950 and she was the wife of the President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 – 1945).

Reindeer rides – now that would be something different. I’ve never heard anyone say they had ridden a reindeer. And I had no idea that Eleanor Roosevelt had stayed at a log cabin at the Arctic Circle. Learn something new every day. I love it.

Yes, it was indeed. Plenty of photos and lovely memories written in our travel notebook. I am glad that you love my reindeer photo. This trip was some kind of “reindeer study” for us, which helped us to understand their life better. Seeing them only in Oulu and in Rovaniemi is not the same, because now they themselves decided on their own lives without owner. Thank you.

Summer reindeer looks like summer hair and looks cool. I felt that everyone co-existed with the reindeer.

Hi Sue.
Thank you loving my reindeer post and this modest summer cottage equipped with two Saunas surrounded by pure nature. One inside the cottage heated by electricity and the one by the lake heated by firewood having direct access to the lake. Saunas are important to us. They help us to resist cold and warming after swimming in a cold lake until late autumn. The milk stand represents our near history which has vanished.

I certainly enjoyed all your photos. You were in a beautiful spot, and the air must have been fresh. The water looks so clear, but I bet it was cold, were you brave enough to take a little swim? On August 4 when you wrote this I was also enjoying palpable silence. In my case I was riding from a lake high in the mountains, Chute lake, and cycling back down to the lakes and city where I live. It was a lovely silent ride, it was like being in a plane up high and gradually over 5 hours we came down the former railway line and arrived home, but our bums were a bit sore from the bikes. oh well. – Thank you for your interest in my blog. – David

Thank you commenting. You wrote it quite well! Two errors only. Poroja must be in form of definitive of plurals Porot and Söpö also in plurals Söpöjä. That is Porot ovat söpöjä. The problem maybe in the word Reindeer, which is in English singular and plural. In Finnish is only Poro. In plurals Poroja & Porot. Compare this with the word cat & cats – Kissa = Kissa, Kissoja = Cats, Kissat = Cats. English is missing one form which we have in Finnish. All this is very difficult to explain.
Your sentence = Poroja ovat paljon söpö, but it must be: Porot ovat hyvin söpöjä. You cannot use in this case paljon, but hyvin. “Hyvin” is = very in English.
May this helps understand better:
There are reindeer there = Tuolla on poroja.
There is a reindeer = Tuolla on poro.
All the reindeer are very cute = Kaikki porot ovat hyvin söpöjä.
I saw only two reindeer = Näin vain kaksi poroa.
I saw only one reindeer = Näin vain yhden poron.
Did you buy a reindeer? = Ostitko poron?
No, I bought two reindeer = Ei, ostin kaksi poroa.
Finnish is difficult!!!

Wow, that is difficult! Thank you for explaining. Duolingo is still in the testing phase with Finnish, but it helps with the basics. Google translate had trouble with the plural of reindeer, probably for the reason you gave. I will keep learning!
