Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum / Museo de Artesanías Luostarinmäki / Musée de l’Artisanat de Luostarinmäki

In English:

Luostarinmäki (Cloister Hill) Handicrafts Museum is situated in Turku which is the fourth biggest town in Finland on South-West coast. To reach it by car, it takes about one and a half hours.

In summer 2010 museum celebrated its 70 years. It was a big luck that the area was not burnt in the big fire in 1827. Now we have possibility to make a “time travel” back to 200 years and admire how many artisans spend the summer in their period costumes, doing their things like lace making, furniture building, watch making, book binding, tobacco curing, ceramics, baking, boot making, or whatever it was made at those days.

If there is now somebody who does not like museums or especially outdoor museums, then it is great time to leave this post, but if You like museums, history and old stuff, then do not hesitate a second, but make a time travel with me thru my many photos. Inside these old houses, I tried to avoid using flash just to relay the intimate ambiance to You.

  1. Thank-you indeed Sartenada! I visited this saved village in Turku back in 1968, but haven’t seen any of my photos for years. They jump into my mind now!! 🙂
[I particularly remember a friendly leatherworker in one of the cottages.]

    • Peter, I always try to avoid using flash when inside in places like this or inside churches. In some cases it is not possible, but when using ISO 3200, it is quite often possible. In some cases flashes are “destroying” original colors, but not in every cases, it depends.🙂

      Thank You.

  3. Oh, I love living museums like this one! The workmanship is fabulous and it never fails to surprise me how small the beds are! If you ever come to Stockholm, you should visit the world’s oldest outdoor museum at Skansen, if you haven’t already done so.

    • Hi Ladyfi.

Thank You. I know Skansen; great place to enjoy a day. Now it has passed years when I visited there, maybe more ten years and at those days my ant yet lived in Stockholm when she was alive.

      Happy Sunday!

  4. I like living museums very much, and this one is just wonderful. It reminds me of Williamsburg in our country. Your pictures are wonderful, and I like the ambiance you captured with your indoor shots. I was intrigued by the homes with the sod on the roof. Thanks for a wonderful tour.

    • Hello George.

Thank You for Your comment and interest to this museum. Peat on the roof is an old habit here. Nowadays there have been some experiments with it on new houses.

      Happy Sunday!

  5. Guten Tag Matti,
I’m thrilled by this museum. I like to visit museums like such. I am always amazed by the simple set, and how people lived. Despite the simplicity, the people were happy and satisfied. I especially liked in Figure 41, the old Singer sewing machine. There is a retractable sewing machine. I have for many years, a Singer sewing machine. However, it is not retractable. On this old sewing machine, I sewed a lot and very often. She is still very well preserved and maintained. This sewing machine I bought from an elderly lady. She had placed an ad in the newspaper to sell the sewing machine. She wanted to have for 75.00 German marks. I paid the sewing machine. However, I had no car and then called a station wagon taxi so I could carry the machine home. It was a funny story at that time. The cab driver rolled his eyes with pleasure. So the machine cost, price, therefore, something more. The beautiful carved pipe in
Figure 63 is a feast for the eyes. The material could be made of ivory or sea-foam? In our area I visited last year, a similar museum. It was very interesting for me to see everything. I liked this series very well again today. Thank you for allowing me to see the photos. All photos are interesting and a blast. We wish you and Anya all the best and health for many more years to your daily routes. Thank you for the e-mail and the beautiful photos. I answer today or tomorrow by e-mail. Have a nice, sunny weekend. Today I have some problems to come into your blog.
In friendship, dear greetings from Christel, Detlev and Ranger.

    • Hallo Christel.

Thank You commenting. Singer sewing machine is / was very popular here too. My mother has one and so we have also. It has not been used for years, because Anja has more modern sewing machine. Photos from 59 to 63 are from the tobacco shop. I am glad my photos pleased to You.

      Herzliche Grüße!

  6. I do love museums and I would love to explore this one! Just the buildings would be wonderful to see and explore! Items made in the past are always fascinating, but it’s especially good to see some of the tools used to make them. It’s incredible what they made with the tools they had in those days! For me, things that were made by old fashioned craftsmanship are much more to be treasured than those produced by modern machines!

Thank you for posting these photos! You are fortunate to be able to visit there and spend time obwerving everything.

My goodness, the craftsmanship and the wisdom of the old, old days. I wouldn’t mind learning a few things in the old ways arts and craftsmanship, for sure. Thanks for posting these photos giving a wonderful view of the wonderful place.

  8. Museums, history, and old things? OMG!!! Hog’s heaven for sure!

What a marvelous village to explore! It reminded me of some places here in the states, though I can’t imagine how folks could’ve survived the elements… cold, cold weather… living like that without insulation for the buildings or sheetrock.

Did you notice the embellishments on the rocking chair. I love old rockers! We have two. And the tables… especially the one with the four protruding corners. OMG. Totally different.

What caught my eye, too, was the photo of the man sitting and the woman standing. So typical. Our family ancestors posed the same way! I wonder who came up with that idea, eh?

Again, wonderful photos. So lifelike. Thanks for taking me along.

    Great job!

    • Hello Deli.

Yes, I noticed those embellishments of rocking chair. The model of table behind the rocking chair is not common to me. Well, it was really habit here also, that man is sitting and woman is standing. I think that times have been changed since that photo was shot.

Thank You for Your visit and leaving Your nice comment. Happy Sunday!

      • Here I am again… checking out your photos… and finding some that I’d overlooked, unless you’ve added more?

        I truly enjoy your posts!!!

Your photos are so real, and the facial expressions on the folks in your photos are MonaLisa-esque intriguing.

Say, I’ve been wondering… What did the young woman put into those paper cones?

I’ve been imagining all sorts of goodies to eat… maybe ’cause I have a sweet tooth… but this inquiring mind really wants to know.

        Till next time then…

      • Hi Deli again.

It is nice that that You rechecked my post and made questions.

The young lady in old style grocery is putting some sweet really into the cones. Once upon a time, before when sweet were not sold in packages, but loose, then sweets were packed in this way. When I was young boy my mother made sugar candies, she put them in paper just this way.

        Happy Tuesday.

  10. Turku was so lucky!
London was burnt down completely in 1666.
Maybe that’s a good thing? Because it allowed London to redevelope the city area after the fire.
How strange that’s it’s in 1666 because 666 is an unlucky number!!

    Comment by London Caller — September 4, 2011 @ 17:14 | Reply

    • Hi London Caller.

Oh yeah, Turku was lucky. Fires and fires, they were medieval plague. Sometimes good photo documentary can save art which has been destroyed. Here is one example of my post.

      Crazy Clay Art

These art pieces lived short time, but I was lucky to make documentary of them. Those numbers are really strange, Thank You commenting.

      Happy Sunday!

  11. What a wonderful trip back in time. I particularly like the intimate details of production you captured in the printer’s cottage, the wavers. cottage and the lace maker’s cottage. What a treasure of a place this is! Janet

    • Hi Janet.

Thank You. It was so glad to read Your comment. In “printer office” the man presented me business cards which he prints. They were really gorgeous. The young lady weaving was very kind when she presented the “process”. Here where I live people are yet today weaving traditional carpets. Carpets are important to us, because in our homes we are not using shoes! Maybe it is odd habit. When coming inside to our homes everybody leaves his / her shoes in vestibule. Doing this way inside of rooms is clean and free from dirt, no dog poo, spitting, chewing gum etc. Carpets are warm to walk in homes and here we have cold winter.

      Happy Tuesday!

  12. What a lovely post Matti, you know how interested I am in such things…I loved the ceramic cuckoo clocks at the start and the sweet shop too was so pretty!
Thank you for another lovely series.
    Have a happy week!

  13. Delightful. If we get back to Turku, this must definitely be on our list of places to visit!

    Comment by Rachel — September 6, 2011 @ 12:57 | Reply

    • Hi Rachel.

So nice to read. If You visit someday again in Finland, then visit the castle of St. Olaf’s Castle in Finnish Olavinlinna in the town of Savonlinna. If You are culture minded, then You can listen to Operas inside the castle. Although old castles are around the Europe, this one differs.

      Have a happy Tuesday!

  14. This is very interesting – and it reminds me of my new workplace ( http://www.dengamleby.dk/eng/den-gamle-by/ ) – where we – besides old traditional craft – also are trying to preserve old Danish houses, gardens and plants and traditions.

    Comment by truels — September 6, 2011 @ 23:36 | Reply

    • Hi Truels.

Thank You commenting. Oh Yeah, really. In Denmark, Sweden and Finland we have preserved living history. Norway I do not know so well, although last summer I visited in Kirkenes and in 2006 in NordKapp which is the most Northern place in Europe to visit by car. If You saw my link after photos, in which I already presented Open-air museum in Lieksa which has 70 old historic wooden houses to explore this place, is not unique because in Helsinki there is also one cool place, but I have not yet photos from it, but some day.

      Happy Wednesday!

  15. I love open air museums, Matti and I so enjoyed going back through time with those ancient china clocks ! What an interesting place to visit, these old houses with their mossy roofs. I loved seeing ancient craft too rarely practiced nowadays, like the bookbinder’s workshop. Embroidery, weaving, a great tradition in your country. Marimekko is a contemporary heritage of it, I like a lot his flamboyant colours and original patterns. Picture no 74 is so beautiful : a wonderful still life, the sun shining through the lovely curtains inside a past well preserved. Thank you for this delightful visit.
Here is our own open air museum in Ballenberg :

So nice, so nice. Thank You. I am really so glad that my post delighted You. I had to look at photo #74 again and it seems to be nice indeed. Ballenberg is also nice place to visit after the video. It is a mixture of Seurasaari in Helsinki and Skansen in Stockholm; well, I see it so. Now I see that next summer I must visit the museum in Seurasaari. I have photos from there, but not especially from the open air museum.

    • Hello Timo.

Oh, I see. Turku is wonderful town. In reality there are a lot of things to see. We have been there few times making only short stops, but this year in August we’ll stay two nights. Turku has long river and on its waterfront there are nice cafés etc. Thank You commenting so nicely my post.

      Have a great day!
