On Saturday March 13th, 2010 we visited the exhibition of Finn Quilt when it celebrated its 20 years in Tampere. This exhibition was the biggest ever organized exhibition in Finland. I can say that there were a lot of quilts and patchworks to be seen. I am not presenting only photos from quilts and patchworks, but also from people and from selling stands.

  1. The quilts are so amazingly complex and beautiful! As I saw each photo it seemed that it was the most beautiful, but then the next. I have so much admiration for the folks who can conceive of and create those intricate patterns.

  2. Thank You for Your visit and comment.

So do me, much admiration for these people who create things with their hands and of course with mind. I guess that people who have the hobby to make patchworks and quilts have some interest to these, just to see how we are doing them, although this hobby is spread throughout the world. I have noticed that inside quilting there are many different techniques. Personally I like quilted bags, small or big. My wife is still using some which she made many years ago.

    • Hi Tamara.

You are right when saying “real pieces of art”, I think also in that way. Yes, it was. The best is, that I can present some these works to others also, that they can thenselves feel like “I was there”.

      Merci beaucoup et belle journée.

  5. I’m a wannabe quilter (but it’s never gotten further than that) and some of these are AMAZING! The detail is brilliant! Thanks SO much for the close-up photos especially, I LOVE those.
I also like the mixture of very traditional patterns and the very modern abstract ones… a feast for the eye, and as for attempting a choose a favourite? … Not possible because I could be changing my mind every minute LOL.

  6. The quilts are amazing. You can just imagine the time, effort and creativity to put those quilts together. The patterns and colours have to complement each others just right. All in all a great inspiration for me.

    • Hi Amryl.

Thank You. That is true that they require plenty of time. One example is a snooze blanket with 700 pieces which my wife made, took from her all the long winter to make. That can be seen in my first quilting post and it is the number eight. BTW, in the same post number 11 is made from 7000 pieces! Can You imagine it?

  9. Quite an incredible exhibition of quilts. They are all so different and so unique. I think that the one in photos 84 and 86, looks very colourful and complicated. I like the abstract quality of number 100. But my favourite is the blue one in 61, it has such movement in it.
It looks as if the quilt is rippling or bending. Very clever.

    Comment by jackiequeen — January 28, 2011 @ 17:35 | Reply

    • Hi Jackie.

Thank You. Great choice that number 84. 86 / 87 are more detailed view from 84, I really wanted to show them. BTW, this one seemed to be one of the most “visited” quilt in the whole exhibition. Number 100 is really so “different” looking quilt, that I have been examined it many times. I think that the planning of 61 is “complicated”, that is not so easy to de, due to its rectangle and curved forms.

Happy weekend to there. We are just about to start to enjoy us Friday evening, few hours and You can start too.

  12. What a better way to spend a grey day than visit your spectacular quilts exhibition ! I am totally admirative of the talent of all these quilters from Finland. So many different patterns and shades : samplers, logcabins, stars, cathedral windows, waves, appliqués, hexagons and so much more… Truly this is magnificent and so creative. Congratulations to all the artists and to the photograph for sharing those wonderful quilts.I very much like the quilt no 94 for its brightness and all the various fabrics and scraps that were used, in the very sense of patchwork.

    • Good morning Isa.

I am delighted that my post could “illuminate” Your grey day. Thank You for Your lovely comment.

We had on Sunday sunny day. I was training nearly all the day “icy road driving tests at extreme conditions” at the airport of Hyvinkää.

It was fantastic to learn how to drive my car at extreme conditions on the ice. Yes on ice at frozen airport! Everyone should learn it. I tell one example from this training. We had to drive as fast we could to manage our car by slaloming between rubber cones and braking was not allowed. At first attempt, I cleared it at the speed of 50km/h or 31 mi. No cones were allowed to touch. Slowly I could increase speed to pass this test brilliantly. Finally I passed the test at the speed of 70 km/h or 43 mi after many attempts. When I tested at the speed of 80 km/h or 49 mi, I knocked over two cones and my car began to spin around like a pinwheel. To managing my car with the increase of 20 kilometers or 12 miles more, was a “victory” to me, because my additional driving education is not wasted. There were of course different types training, but this is one good and simple example. To manage one’s car on ice is not so easy. Test it yourself, if You do not believe, but not on a road.

The strangest thing is that the majority of participants were Ladies. It seems that Finnish men are thinking in their mind: “I am the best; I do not need nothing extra training”. Maybe this kind of thinking is a universal among men? Okay, I felt that I need although I have been driving in about 1200000 kilometers or 745645 mi since 1972. When driving on snow and ice in Finland this kind of extra training is useful in case if something happens. So, the loss of control of car while driving would be disastrous in some situations.

My sunny Sunday on the icy “track” was awesome.

  14. Good morning Matti,
Again, I look at interesting and admirable craftsmanship. The motifs and colors in the images 53/60/69-70/71/80/89/94/97 are my favorites. Particularly attractive are the quilts in the pictures 69/70 and 97 These blankets I would respectively, for decoration, hang on neutral-colored walls. The natural light in the exhibition area is advantageous. The motifs and colors of the quilts come beautifully expressed. All designs and colors are in their own way very expressive and interesting. I thank you for allowing me to look at the pictures of this series and look forward to the next. Thank you very much, that you my web page stored in your blog. I am very happy. Also I would like to thank you for all your nice comments including stars. We wish you and Anja, all the best and health on your common everyday ways. e-mail follows today in the evening.

    • Guten morgen Christel.

Thank You making Your comment. Great selection. I tell that number 97 is showing a view from Tampere, the city in which this exhibition was hold. In photo can be seen “Vapriikki”, coming from the word Fabric, so I think. Vapriikki is nowadays is a museum centre. So, this is really an interesting quilt with nice thema.

I wünsche ihnen einen schönen Montag.

  18. Thank you Matti. You have given me yet another example of the excellent art work that can be found in Finland. Each picture had something that arrested my eyes. You can be very proud of your photography. Thank you also for including some of the people at the exhibition. Apart from your lady wife, we don’t know who they are but they are all enjoying the exhibition.
I am still “Wallowing” in the wonderful music I bought in Helsinki. I cannot understand why it is not popular here in England. If I ask in a music shop for Finnish music – they look at me as if I asked for music from Mars! The Kantele makes a wonderful sound; so sweet and warm. Like those quilts!
Now I’m listening to Ulla Katajavuori, “Grand Lady of Kantele” It is a feast for the ears, like the quilts are a feast for the eyes!
    Many thanks again,
    Clive and Adi

    • Hello Clive and Adi.

I am so glad that You did like this quilt show. Ulla Katajavuori, oh yeah, I remember when I was child and young, then in our radio I could listen to her Kantele playing. She was a true virtuoso.

What comes generally speaking to Finnish music, it is unknown. I feel myself very sad when knowing that many of our traditional song are not known abroad. People even do not know that we have in summer for example Tango Festivals in Seinäjoki. Our songs and music were written at “wrong” time, at the time when there was no Internet and maybe it is due that they are “music from Mars” to modern people. We have many “heart breaking” Christmas songs and at Christmas time feelings are allowed. Anyway I am very glad that our music is known by You and Your wife. Thank You very much commenting.

      Have a wonderful Friday!

  19. These quilts are exceptional. Have you ever thought of putting the collection together in a book to sell to the public? I live in America and much of this country is unaware of the fine weaving, knitting and designs that are produced by Finnish craftsmen.
Two of my grandparents came from Finland and I am fortunate to have a number of things made by both of them. They both originated from the Vipuri area and I have no connection with relatives there. I have done extensive genealogical research, but have not had much luck since that area is now part of Russia.
Quilting has made a comeback in the USA and is much more creative and artistic than it was formerly.

    Thank you for sharing,
    Janet

    • Hello Janet.

Thank You for Your visit and very interesting comment.

There are two coincidences. First, next week I’ll publish a new quilt post; that is Friday. Second, my wife’s roots are from Karelia too and more specifically only 18 miles from Vyborg. In November I’ll publish three posts from the trip which we made last summer to former Finnish Karelia. I send to You private message.

      Have a lovely Sunday.

    • Hi Anna.

I am very glad for Your comment. This year I’ll publish one quilting post full with colorful quilts and “fancy” pattern from 2013s. Next Sunday we’ll visit again in a quilt show and I hope that I can find something about which people love.

      Have a great day!

    • Buongiorno, Anna.

Your comments always warm my mind and quilting is very near my heart, because it was / is yet Anja’s hobby today. Many quilts are like art, beautiful art and I enjoy seeing how skilled people are. She has so many hobbies that sometimes she says that why there are only 24 hours in a day, I need more! When my series presenting road trip to the beyond the Arctic Circle ends, then I show two “amazing” hobbies, well maybe I praise too much. She guides her hobbies step by step and thus everyone can learn to make them. If You are interested, I can send one photo.

      Buona giornata!
