Search for ghost houses
This post is direct continuation of my series telling “Unknown” Helsinki. I decided to change the name, because ghost houses describe the content best.
I have heard about these abandoned houses on the biggest island of Helsinki – Laajasalo, but never visited them. On a sunny Sunday morning we decided to find them. To find them was not difficult when knowing where to start and where to find the right path thru the forest. In the beginning paths were quite wide, but when continuing the narrowed. Of course, there were no signs, but so what, because the area is not too big to explore.
There has been dozen villas originally from early 1900’s. Their story is long and sad, because nowadays they are nearly all destroyed and burned. Arson in this area have been systematic. Good thing is that after arson, there is no risk for collapsing houses if visitors want visit inside. The villas are located on the cliffs which are about 32 meters high.
We were expecting to find many ghost houses, but we found remains of one burned house and one ghost house. The house was left with broken windows and graffiti was painted everywhere. It was in poor condition and I didn’t go inside to photograph – naturally. Here and where we saw some old bushes of Roses and rhododendrons.
My wife guides You in this post thru the gorgeous forest to the ghost house. On the way we stopped by the forest pond where we saw some water lilies. On the way back we decided to visit the pond again. There is a trail leading around it. When we visited the area, it was quite early morning with sun shine, which helped to catch beautiful photos with shades and lights. The green color was multicolored in the forest.
Visiting the area, You must take the bus number 88 (Kaitalahti) from Herttoniemi Metro station. At the final stop, continue ahead on the road called Päätie. After walking about 300 meters You will arrive on the corner where my wife shows You where to continue (first photo). She guides You all the time and finally to the terminus (last photo).

Hello! The ghost house in the beautiful nature is sad. Ghost houses are increasing in Japan as well. Were you interested and visited? Water lilies that bloom in the pond are very beautiful. Have a good day!

Hello wakasahs15th.
Nature is beautiful on this Island and forest path is easy to walk. It was nice to make this post. Thank You.

Hello Mr. Matti,
Thank you for sharing more of your beautiful country. It is especially interesting for us, because we can’t “see” this information in traditional books or travel info. I agree, it is sad the history of the ghost houses. It makes a striking contrast with beautiful nature. I am happy you and your wife could visit together, please give her best wishes from me and my husband.
Best wishes,
Takami
PS – We visited the Tove Jansson Akebono Children’s Park last month! It was very beautiful with lovely architecture. As you know, Moomin is much loved in Japan. Again, thank you for sharing the information.

Your forests are so beautiful in your country. The beauty lies in the flowers, the fresh green and always water nearby. Shame about those houses, which just decay really. Thank you to your wife for leading the way!

Matti, what beautiful countryside. The Ghost houses are very interesting. I’m sure we have many in the US. The just look abandoned and run down. Thanks for sharing this with us. 📚 Christine

I enjoyed the stroll with you both along the forest paths and I especially liked the water lily pond. One of my favourite things about Finland is that nature is always on the doorstep. Thank you for posting this beautiful photos Matti and I hope you are enjoying the summertime which I’ve read in YLE is cooler than usual. Marion
Comment by Little Miss Traveller — July 16, 2019 @ 09:53 |
Hello Marion.
Thank You for Your kind comment. Yes, it has been “colder” than usually. We just walked to the shop / library 4 km / 2.5 mi (Saari shopping center) and it rained all the way back and forth. It was not a problem, because we have umbrellas and reincoats. 🙂 My wife keeps daily diary and last year we had these temperatures:
Helsinki July 16, 2018 30℃ / 86℉.
Helsinki July 17, 2018 32℃ / 90℉.
Utsjoki July 17, 2018 32℃ / 90℉.
Please note, that Utsjoki is north of Helsinki 1088km / 676mi. This means that it is in the north! Well, this year – what about global warming – memories! 🙂
Have a wonderful day!

Hei Irma.
Kiitokset kauniista kommentista. Laajasalon saari on monelle tuntematon. Mitä siellä on, monet ehkä sanovat, eivätkä vaivaudu itse tutkimaan asia. Minun vastaukseni on luontoa ja kauneutta, vaikka onkin ihan Helsingin naapurissa. Nyt se on todistettu neljän postauksen voimin.
Hyvää päivänjatkoa.

Most beautiful the way to these abandoned houses which regrettably became the victim of an arson attack respectively is now covered with graffiti and already gone to rack. Such a perfect idyll around – and right in the middle of it these ruins …
I enjoyed the guided tour in the forest (thanks to Anja for showing always where to go and which turn to make on the path). The pond looks gorgeous in the morning light! I also love your two photos taken on your way back showing a kind of cotton grass growing at the pondside.
I’m glad that you mentioned this new forest post in a commentary on my blog as sadly just on this day your blog entry as well as two or three other posts published by blogs that I follow didn’t show up in the WP reader. I discovered them by pure chance and of course with some delay.
Have a nice weekend, Matti!

Hello Michèle.
It was a great fun to organize a “guided” tour. Before going there, we discussed how to present them in the best way keeping in our mind that: “what about if somebody really wants to go there”.
I am glad that You knew cotton grass among my photos. This was the second time since 2012, when I showed them. In this post I have good photos of them:

Thank You very much for Your praising comment.
