Farewell Unknown Helsinki / Adiós Helsinki desconocida / Adieu Helsinki Inconnue / Adeus Desconhecido Helsinque / Helsinki desconhecida

In English:

These are farewells to this lovely island

We moved to a city next to Helsinki called Espoo. From Espoo it takes only 13 minutes by train to central Helsinki. In 2026, Helsinki and this island will get a tram connection. Then we’ll be back on the tram.

A little sadly, I remember the time when we lived on this island, which provided us with beautiful scenery, stunning seaside cliffs to walk on, wild flowers, forest paths to hike. These memories remain in our hearts for a long time, but new adventures invite us.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on what the last picture shows. Thank you all for exploring this island through my photos! Goodbye Laajasalo!

At the end I will you give links to previous messages.

    • Hello wakasahs15th.

This Island – Laajasalo is developing fast. Its nature offers for a visitor beautidul nature. This I have shown in four previous posts which I added links at the end of this posts. During the years we have crisscrossed its every path, which means we know it thoroughly. We had our own personal reasons to leave it. When the bridge from the center of Helsinki connect this island, then it has changed its faces and we will find much new and interested things.

Here is the presentation of the future bridge. The length of video is 5:12. It is awesome! Although it is in Finnish, it shows very well this plan!

  4. Hello Mr. Matti,
I have bittersweet feelings to say “goodbye” to this beautiful island Laajasalo.
It was a real pleasure to explore some areas of “unknown” Helsinki area through your photos. I loved the abundance of nature of this area.

Your current town Espoo seems to be a lively place, with active development of the area. The view from your window is very striking, we can see a clear view of the progress and growth in the town.

I wish you a good day and good week!

      Matti

  13. So beautiful. Finland remains a mystery for me. I was a few hours in Helsinki. That’s all. Also Finland is not often featured in fiction (tv, film). Yes there’s the WRC ‘1000 Lakes’ Rally, Mika Häkkinen and Kimi Räikkonen. There’s images of Santa village, saunas and naked Finns ;-). But besides those clichés, I know next to nothing. Your blog shows me the Finland I don’t know. Thank you!

  22. Certainly the natural landscape of the island is quite lovely! I recognize some of the wildflowers as the same ones grow in the part of Alaska where we live in the summer. The yellow ones look like what we call tansy, a plant I use for dyeing wool. Your new place is a big change, but as you say, there are new places to explore, and you can always go back to visit the island. I’m sure Finland has many wild places to visit! I like that the developers are leaving a reasonable space between the buildings, which will help avoid a closed in feeling for people. Although we are sad to see natural spaces turn into developments, people have to live somewhere, and hopefully the developers design and build with good taste and keep as much nature as possible around the living spaces. I think it’s good for people’s health and encourages people to spend time outside.
Enjoy your new place and we look forward to your new adventures and learning more about Finland!

Thank you. I understand you. We both have live on countryside and in towns, also when being child, young and adult. Last time when we lived on countryside It, lasted nearly 20 years. Then costs of living, different taxes, on countryside rose too high, then we had to consider to move to a town also considering that we are getting old someday. There are towns and towns. Environments vary from one town to another and even inside towns.

      Have a wonderful day.

One of the most interesting things among others, has been to get to know opinions and thoughts of those people living elsewhere. Also, our language has become richer. I can say that our life has become richer mentally. This means also every removal gave a stimulations to our brains.

Thank you commenting. Well, we have snow in the north, meaning north of the Arctic Circle! 🙂 I live in the south and we have about + 8 degrees Celsius. There are leaves in trees yet, although not in all. In my newest home, we have a TV-channel of NHK in English – very interesting information.

  27. Pictures are wonderful! Nature in Laajasalo looks beautiful. I hope you settle well in Espoo. The good thing is that Espoo has some lovely nature and places to visit as well.

    • Hello Elena.

Thank you for your kind words. I am sure that it we will find nice photo targets here. Autumn, when leaves nearly have fallen, is not beautiful, but we have time to seek paths for our outdoor activities.

      Happy Sunday!

  28. Hello Matti, so time arrived to leave the island of Laajasalo and Anja and you are going to experience new adventures at and around Espoo. ^^ It really was a particular pretty island you used to live on and I enjoyed your blogposts showing the unknown Helsinki. I hope you will not miss it too much but I’m sure exploring your new area will show that every place has it’s very own beauty and nice regional destinctions.
I noticed what you explained to Sue in a comment above and I feel similarly. It’s a kind of challenge, of course! One which one should always take as a positive one, as stimulation as you said.
My very best wishes and have a happy time at Espoo!
    Michèle

    • Hello Michèle.

I am glad when reading your kind words. When the years go by, then it is time to visit Laajasalo and make a tram ride on the Finland’s longest bridge, which length is 1200 meters! Our removal is not completed inside the house. We wanted us to transport some much as possible our small things. We drove nineteen times between Laajasalo and Leppävaara in one direction (26 km) for example transporting my about 1500 French books about 100 Spanish and Portuguese books and Anja’s German books. Then we have yes big amount of LP-music, CD-music, some VHS-cassettes and even C-cassettes. We throwed many travel souvenirs to trash. Books are now in six bookshelves, also all music. You may wonder who nowadays listen to C-cassettes? They content is most humorous radio plays dating back many years. Also, they content local radio recording from my many visits to South and Central America in the 70s. The ads on them are awesome listening nowadays, because ads have changed since those years.

Today our new home begins to look like home not a higgledy-piggledy warehouse.

All the best you and yours.
      Matti

  29. Such blue sky, clear waters and lovely flowered scenery! Beautiful hiking! Such things as bridges and trams make for very easy access to areas and the numbers of people that decide to stay have a way of making serious changes to what existed before……some changes aren’t the best. Always enjoy your professional photo tours……hugs to you both!

Merci.

Passes un très bon week-end, bisous.

      Amicalement, Matti.
