  1. What a beautiful place, both in the natural setting with those wonderful rocks and the marvelous buildings. The villas fascinate me: I perceive them to be a carpenter’s heaven! I would have loved to have seen them while they were being built.

    • Hi Montucky.

Thank You. I admire too how skillfully these villas have been made. Here on Southern coast line rocks are in many place red granite and I like them.

This place is not so far from Helsinki, but no railway connection to there, only busses and cars. One famous happening in Hanko is its regatta which lasts three days.

  2. We loved Hanko when we were there a couple of years ago. We stayed in the first brown house you photographed.

    • Hi Bagnidilucca.

That was a surprise that You have been in this small charming summer town. When photographing villas, I noticed that some of them arrange accommodation. Really great.

      Buon Lunedi!

  3. Stunning scenery captured by your third eye, eh?

Gosh… The buildings, the shimmering water, and all else makes me wish, wish, wish I could visit.

Is that a water tower in orange? The University of Texas would certainly like that, being that its the school’s color.

Again, your photos are spectacular… and I love the ones of you and Matti posed in the same places!

    • Hello Deli.

Thank You. I see from Your comment that You really liked my post. That orange tower is really water tower. It was not open, sigh, because I was again visiting it offseason. Those rocks are really a good place to pose, because it is where I am, is so smooth.

      Have lovely Monday!

  4. I really like the rocky coast and those beautiful old buildings. The details in the woodwork are amazing. They definitely don’t build houses like that any more. The orange clock/observation tower is interesting. I think I could happily spend a few summer days in this beautiful town.

  6. Those houses are so pretty, like gingerbread! Are they summer houses that people only live in on holidays?

    • Hello Convictstock.

Thank You. I am not sure if these houses are in use during winter, maybe some, maybe not. I am glad that my photos pleased to You also.

  12. So this is the southern most town in Finland?
Well, it is probably very cool in the summer there.
When I was in Scotland, their summer was not hot at all.
    It’s about 15~20 degrees.
But if you go up to Shetland, near Norway, it can be 10~15 degrees.
So I guess it’s the same for Hanko.😉

    Comment by London Caller — July 31, 2011 @ 17:50 | Reply

    • Hi London Caller.

Thank You talking about climate / weather. Answer is absolutely: No! The weather is much warmer.

I try to clarify to You our climate and weather conditions, although I am not professional, but being senior citizen, I have made some observations.

The Gulf Stream coming across the Atlantic Ocean from the Eastern coast of the States impacts to the weather of the whole Scandinavia. This means simply that on the same latitude the whole Scandinavia is warmer than sites across the Atlantic sites to the West from Europe. This is a good start to understand our climate, but it is not all.

After this general point of view, let’s take closer look. To the South of our South coast is a sea called Gulf of Finland. In the South there is Estonia and in the East Russia. This sea is a “huge storage of warm water” during summer and during winter it is the contrary. This means simply, that in the beginning of summer, the weather on the South coast is colder than few kilometers / miles in the North. Sea is chilling the weather. Situation is changing as the summer progress. When in Autumn the weather can be warmer on South coast than few kilometers / miles in the North, because the Gulf of Finland (huge reservoir) is warming.

This not at all. We have sayings that “summer comes from the East” or more exactly from Russian steppes in Southwest. That is really right. Another saying is saying that winter; the real winter is coming from the East. Well, what does these mean? They mean that in winter, when prevailing wind conditions, the wind is coming from the East, the climate is cold and dry. In summer it means, that the hot air is coming from the East, we have really hot. I did not say warm, but hot. Last summer in 2010, we had the highest summer ever having the record of 37,2 ° C / 98.96 ºF.

If winds are coming from the West across the mountains of Sweden and Norway, it means that the weather is cold and rainy during summer. During the winter it means a lot of snow, but not cold weather. Our country is long, actually it is 1160 kilometers / 721 miles and when going to the North weather is getting colder of course. But, but, as I earlier talked about that summer is coming from the East, summer can be warm in the North also beyond the Polar Circle. One good example is small town of Sodankylä. Yesterday the max temperature was 21,0 ° C / 69.8 ºF. Sodankylä is situated to the North from the town of Rovaniemi which is just at Polar Circle 126 kilometers / 78 miles.

We have thousand of lakes in our country and they have same kind of impact locally as Gulf of Finland. It can be said that warmest weather is on Southern part of Finland. The height of the soil means here also colder or warmer depending the height. One good example is the where I live. The base of our house is at 111 meters / 364 feet high from sea level. In winter when going to the nearest town which is at lower level, we have few degrees colder than in that town. In summer, it can be otherwise, because around my house we have huge area of sand and when sun is warming it stores heath as Gulf of Finland. Well, these things are not so simply, because many things affect to another.

These were only point of views to understand the weather conditions in Finland. Weather can be warm today and cold tomorrow as You know. It is not at all so easy to tell about all from weather, but maybe You understand better why we have warmer weather generally speaking here than in Scotland or in Shetland. I hope that this helped You.

P.S. It would have been nice to know that did you like villas!
