Church of Haukipudas / Iglesia de Haukipudas / Église de Haukipudas / Igreja de Haukipudas

In English:

In 2014 we made short (1410 kilometers / 876 miles) road trip in Finland. During five days we saw a lot of things, like churches, Poor-man statues, some towns, old historical wooden houses, sandy beaches, carved bears, aviation museum, Votive ship etc.
Our second stop was in Haukipudas after Muhos. The church of Haukipudas has been built in 1762. It was built by famous Finnish Matti Honka (1713-1777) who built eleven churches and four bell towers in Finland. What makes this church significant, is that on its walls there are paintings presenting stories from the Bible. They are everywhere and due to this, it is some kind of picture church. The painter is called Mikael Toppelius (1774-1779). The bell tower is from the year 1751.

The Poor-man statues is from 1984, so quite new. The text in the Poor-man’s hat is freely translated: “He who has pity on the poor gives to the Lord”. Inside the church there is also beautiful Votive ship. This post has lot of photos, so take Your time.

    • Hi Pauline.

In my country, this kind of churches called “picture churches”. I have not visited all of them, because they are spread around my country. Here is very old picture church and quite popular among tourists. It was built in 1647-1652:

Old red wooden church of Pyhämaa.

Thank You visiting this post and leaving Your comment.

      • This is so wonderful! I just love the church in this link – thank you for sharing it with me. In my country anything over a hundred years is considered ‘old’ and it is wonderful to see this beautifully decorated wooden building standing in such good condition for so long. Like yours, our buildings are mostly wooden and here they fall victim to fire, earthquake and time.

        • Hello Pauline.

Thank You again. Fires have been biggest enemy of wooden churches also in Finland. In Finland, we do not have earthquakes. It is pity! Sigh!

  7. The church architecture, first of all , surprised me. A wooden church looks more intimate than any other, I think!
Then the profusion of pictures , the chandeliers , all the details you showed so well , fascinated me! Thanks so much!

  8. It is the picture of the splendid church. It is a very old work. The painting which the temple of Japan does not entrust a wall and a ceiling with is described. I thought that a style of painting leaving a lot of space resembled closely. I heard that a lot of wooden churches stayed in Finland.
How was the summer solstice festival? A big summer festival is held in Kyoto in Japan on July 15. It is called the Gion festival(祇園祭). It is something like summer solstice festival.

    • Hi Medaka4841.

Thank You for Your praising comment. I am very happy that You saw this old wooden church thru my photos! Our summer solstice day passed very tranquilly. We spent it on my countryside home mowing, doing different things, just sitting outside by the table and enjoying the tranquility we have there. It was interesting to follow how wagtails searched worms in that part where I had already mowed. 🙂

I’ve noticed this many times before in churches that you have presented and I’m always amazed. Talk about standing up to the tests of time! It’s a real credit to the devotion of your people!

Well, on the western part of Finland, there are very interesting churches. There is excellent Finnish church search in which You can find easily where You want to visit:

      Tiekirkot

Of course, you can see many interesting churches in my blog. Start from this post, because many of them are on the western part of Finland. There is link to the next or to previous, but this is good start. lthese posts presents Poor-man statues, which are gorgeous and nearly totally unknown in other parts of the world. Couple of years ago, I wrote to Unesco World Heritage that please take these unique and historic wooden statues to their list, but they did not even bother to answer to me!!! Sigh. I have decided to write again this year.

Haukipudas church is to the north of Oulu, not so much.

      • Thanks a lot!! I did not know about the TIEKIRKKO site! There is a famous church nearby our summer house too: the round church of Vimpeli. Apparently there aren’t that many round churches in Finland. But I will look for more on the website.

I am also interested in the Poor-man statues because (you may remember) has restored the one in Nurmo (this is where my mother comes from).

Shame on UNESCO for not responding. Do write them again. That is an excellent idea to have them listed! I wonder if anyone has ever made any kind of a list of all the existing statues? Or better, a map would be nice!

    • Hi Amoralegria.

I am glad that You loved my photos. Maybe there is influence from our mythological sagas, but it is Finnish way to see biblical scenes. Our countryside is the best way to explore our old wooden churches, which differs heavily from those in the Southern Europe. I have photographed about 480 churches in Finland, which are mainly on countryside during 11 years. Inside them, there are gorgeous art chandelier, pulpits and altars. Some parishes are poor, and inside their churches are modest, but the feeling is devote. One curiosity in our churches is separated bell towers. They are beautiful!

Although You do not check these links, I show them.

    Comment by amoralegria — November 10, 2018 @ 20:19 | Reply

    • Hello Amoralegria.

Thank You commenting and asking a question. The text in the Poor-man’s hat is freely translated: “He who has pity on the poor gives to the Lord”. The big question is: What are Poor-man statues? I have told about them in many posts, because they are unique in the whole World. In Finland, we try to get them on UNESCOs World Heritage list and I hope that we will have success. They are something which are not easy to understand because people around the world has not seen them. I give two links here that You can get a better idea. This one is the tenth post of my series of 15 posts, which presents 57 Poor-man statues.

      Poor-man statues – post10

This post is the first of my series of three post in which they are collected around Finland to an exhibition inside the world’s biggest wooden church:

      Statues of Paupers1

Next summer a Lady from U.K will come to Finland for three weeks and will shoot photos of them. This is the first time when somebody living abroad has a real interest in them. I am very happy for this.

      Happy Sunday!

I am glad that you loved this church. It is not most beautiful wooden church, but is shows, that bell towers are separated from churches themselves, also it presented a huge modern poor-man statue and a very beautiful Votive ship. These are typical for our countryside wooden churches.

If you did not know what are those unique poor-man statues, then take look at my post:

      Statues of Paupers1

Those ships inside churches are called Votive ships. They have a special meaning:
