Summer city / Ciudad de verano / Ville d’été / Cidade de verão

In English:

Lappeenranta

Lappeenranta lives in summer. It offers for visitors two main sights: Lake Cruises and Sand Sculptures, which can be admired all summer long. Lake cruises are very popular and one cruise specialty is Visa-free cruises to Russia. Lappeenranta has about 73000 residents.

The town of Lappeenranta is situated by the lake Saimaa, which is the fourth largest lake in Europe The distance from Helsinki to Lappeenranta is 223 kilometers / 139 miles to the East. In addition to those two sights, there is the old fortress of Lappeenranta. I spent three months in this town when I attended my non-commissioned officer training there. Nowadays it is also international University City.

  1. It looks so pretty. I would enjoy an afternoon cruising on the lake.

    • Hello Carol.

Cruises on our lakes are enjoyable. There is no hurry, beautiful landscapes, people on shore and Saunas everywhere. Best time for a cruise is mid-summer. In the south, nights are short, but in the north, there are white nights, meaning sun never sets.

Here is an example of our mid-summer evening cruise in mid-Finland. There you can see our Midsummer Bonfire burning on shores:

      Midsummer cruise

Welcome some summer to make a lake cruise!

      Have a wonderful day!

In Japan, autumn is here, and the weather has turned cold. I dream of next summer.

  7. A very lovely city, that has been through a lot! love those bicycle buggies. One question.. the statue… who is the soldier on the horse? Thank you for sharing.

    Comment by Deb — November 6, 2019 @ 14:16 | Reply

    • Hello Deb.

I think that the statue represents a typical dragon. The dragon was a soldier who fought on foot but moved on horseback. Thank you commenting. In Lappeenranta there was a dragon school. Thank you commenting.

We love this town. It has a special feeling. Coffee, cinnamon, sun shine and also ice cream makes the mind happy with positive attitude. In this town it was for the first time, when I was about to meet another blogger. I passed their caravan at the distance of five meter. This was revealed the next day when they introduced Lappeenranta. Thank you commenting.

  20. Lappeenranta is a beautiful situated town (and looks wonderful itself!). It offers a lot for residents as well as tourists and any other summer guests spending a day or their holidays at the waterside. What a large lake! And what a relaxing way to reach other places by cruising on the lake, by cycling to discover the town or the banks or by sitting in a nice café having a look around – simply enjoying the colourful scenery.
The old steamboat, the S/S Leppävirta is a highlight, too! I cannot (yet) reach the website mentioned in your post, but love you photo instead. ^^

Have a nice week; Matti and greetings to Anja, too!

    • Hello Michèle.

Oh, how glad I am when I read your praising comment. Thank you. Those old steam ships make cruises between some towns like Kuopio and Savonlinna. Savonlinna is also one of my favorite summer towns in Finland. In its harbor, there are many old steam ships making longer and shorter cruises. If you see this, then you understand, why I love this town:

      Savonlinna

All the best you and yours,

  21. What a gorgeous place! A cruise on the lake sounds like a great way to spend some time and I love the lakeside seating area 🙂

    Comment by Cathy — November 16, 2019 @ 13:47 | Reply

    • Hello Cathy.

Thank you commenting. We have many lakes or better said there are 168,000 lakes of at least with 500 square meters size. So, this makes it natural that cruises are popular on our lakes. Most popular are those made on board of old historic steam ships, which cruise from town to town or make shorter 1- 2 hours cruises. Mid-summer cruises are awesome, because nights are short and, in the north, there are no nights. White nights are experiences which is an unforgettable experience. I have published many cruise posts. One which I love very much is cruising on a Lake Inari, which distance from the Arctic Circle to the North is 316 km / 196 miles.

      Cruising on Lake Inari

      Have a wonderful day!
