187 888 Lakes / 187 888 Lagos / 187 888 Lacs / 187 888 Lagos

In English:

There are 187 888 lakes in Finland according to Wikipedia.

When photographing around my country, I started to take photos also from lakes. These photos show lakes from the West to the East, from the South to the North. Time range varies from 2004 to 2010. Cameras I have been using are: Panasonic Lumix DMC FX7 from 2004 (5.0megapixels), Panasonic Lumix DMC LX-1 from 2006 (8.3 megapixels) and Nikon D300 from 2008 (12.3 megapixels). Thus the quality of photos may vary if You wonder some photos.

Quite many photos I have been taken in the early morning, because my trips start early. Lack of sunshine in some photos “annoys” me, but it is understandable. My set of photos I start with two photos from the North and with that I mean those photos are far beyond the Polar Circle. The first photo shows our coffee break. In the North those “drivers’ resting-places” are not luxury, but anyway, they are useful. Also if we think that driving hours and hours who needs to sit? The second photo shows Lake Inari (1043 km² / 402 mi²). It is quite big as my photo reveals with 3000 islands on it. This post has been waiting 4 years to be published.I hope that You enjoy my photos.

  3. Ooo … There’s a Klepper boat in the second picture 🙂 And there are 2 pictures taken in Koli, aren’t there?

I don’t know how anyone living in Finland can do anything else but take photos of its numerous lakes – they are so beautiful in so many different ways! Thank you for this pleasure!

  6. Beautiful! Very much like Minnesota, but we are only “land of 10,000 lakes”.

    Comment by Bondseye — July 10, 2014 @ 12:31 | Reply

    • Hi Lisa.

Thank You. Well 10000 lakes is big amount. We both have hard task to shoot photos from every lake. 🙂 Minnesota was very popular place when the main amount of Finns left Finland between 1864-1914. Maybe they found its landscapes similar to Finland. When I was young and worked for Finnair, I remember very well when there were direct charter flights from Duluth to Helsinki.

      Have a wonderful day!

I love always comparisons. There are so many beautiful places in our world which earn to be presented. Minnesota and other places were popular among Finnish immigrants. Did You know that for example the Gateway Arch in St. Louis was designed by the Finn? Wikipedia offers great info:

  23. Absolutely wonderful! These lakes are simply gorgeous. In general Finland and its nature, its colours, its huge areas and wide heavens are so beautiful, but water makes it still much more impressive. There is such a silence and peace …
Matti, I love these reflections which one can discover on some of your pictures. Somestimes the rocks of a small island, sometimes the shadow of trees. And I really admire how you “caught” the reflections of the white clouds in the water! Stunning! And – well I smiled a bit when I scrolled down and looked at your photo with this nice windmill and the friendly smiling brown sheep. I learnt from the commentaries above that you obviously had a familiy meeting at that time. I hope you enjoyed it! Lovely place to meet!

So many lakes – and the lake Inari really looks like an ocean!
    Great!

Have a nice weekend! – Michèle

    • Hallo Michèle.

Oh my… what comment! Thank You. Every summer our family changes places for annual meeting. In 2016 our family book will be published and it will contain about 1500 pages. Different branches of our family have passed DNA-tests. Curiously my branch of family was exception and it pointed to Southern Europe. This maybe reason why I love French, Spanish and Portuguese – who knows. 🙂

      Happy weekend!

      Comment by Sartenada — July 12, 2014 @ 13:07 | Reply

      • A familiy book to be published? And 1,500 pages? Wow! How long have you and/or your family already worked on it? It doesn’t sound easy to me to check descent and genealogy worldwide or to have these DNA-tests done by all members in question.
Certainly your explanation is quite correct regarding your obvious love (and talent) for Southern European languages. 🙂

        Comment by ladyfromhamburg — July 14, 2014 @ 23:24 | Reply

        • Hi Michèle.

Our family has hired a genealogist who has been working about six years. The chairman of our family decided that from every branch, one representative must be DNA tested. I was selected as a representative of my branch. BTW, in our family meeting we had about 100 family members.

          Thank You for Your interest.
          Have a nice day!

  28. What fantastic photos! Do you have much trouble in the summer with mosquitoes and midges in Finland?

    Comment by chrissiedixie — July 13, 2014 @ 13:27 | Reply

    • Hi Chrissie.

Thank You commenting and asking the question. Well, generally not so much. For example just today we hiked in woods, there were only few mosquitos and we did not have any repellent. some years in Lapland (Northern part of Finland) there have been.

      Happy Sunday!

  34. Moi!
I know that there are many lakes which are very beautiful in your country.
I can imagine that I join wonderful coffee time with you both.
And then, we will talk about the nature on the earth.
But I can’t speak English fluently, so I must learn English till we meet. ha ha.
Surface of lakes are like a mirror.
I imagined another world in the mirror. It is different from the world we live.
If I look at your beautiful photos, I will be able to create a story in my head like a writer of fairy tales.
You can actually see the beautiful scenery, I envy you!!
Thank you for the beautiful view this time.

    • Hi Tokeloshe.

Thank You for Your kind comment. I am still using D300 and I bought it in 2008. I have never used tripod. In this camera I love its rapidity to be ready faster than man can imagine. I have an old post which photos I took thru the train windows. The speed of train was 99mi/h. Here is the link:

      Snowy winter landscape.

      You chose wonderful photo.

      Have a wonderful day!

BTW, if I had money, I probably would buy this Nikon now:

      Nikon D810.
