Himmeli.
This Finnish traditional decoration has experienced a new birth in Finland. Originally it was a Christmas decoration, in fact it is yet today, but its use has increased to decorate our homes at other times. Now “everyone” makes it. What is this traditional Finnish decoration called? It is Himmeli. Most probably the word Himmeli comes probably from German word Himmel meaning Heaven or sky.
Originally Himmelis were made from rye straws and their traditional basic forms are octahedron. Nowadays people make Himmelis also from colorful drinking straws. Combining multiple octahedrons to each other is the basic idea. Even You can make it. My wife guides You make Himmeli step by step using long glass tube beads starting with one triangle. For one octahedrons man needs 8 triangles. The first photo shows the final Himmeli and then many steps presenting unfinished Himmeli. Last three photos show smaller basic Himmeli.

About one week, but not making it from the morning to the evening. However, she was forced to dismantle something due to an error. He bought package in which all had the same length. There are beads with various lengths and multiple colors available. She did not remember how many packages this Himmeli required. You could start with a small Himmeli. Thank You asking questions.

I make rye-straw and make himmelis in Niigata, Japan. I once visited Finland and am fascinated by himmeli. I love to make them but now I want to know more about the history, background of straw-art like himmelis. In Japan, we have rice-straw art, called “Shimenawa.” I wonder if you could give me some info. to know more about the roots of Himmeli. I miss beautiful autumn season in Finland. Kiitos!! Mau
