Summer biking / Ciclismo en verano / Cyclisme en été / Ciclismo no verão

In English:

Summer biking 2016.

In summer 2016, we made some biking tours in Oulu, Finland. In Oulu, there about 650 km / 404 mi biking routes. To put this into perspective with Helsinki, this is much. Oulu has nearly 200 000 residents and Helsinki about 630 000 residents. Biking routes in Helsinki are 1200 km / 746 mi. The best is that cycling ways are wide. There is no need to dodge even if two pedestrians and cyclists meet at the same time.

  10. What a pleasant place that must be for biking, and it’s so good that so many very nice biking paths have been created! It is a wonderful way to enjoy the scenery and get some good exercise at the same time. There are no trails like that in my area but I enjoy riding a mountain bike, mostly on ole logging roads. There have been a few problems here with running into bears while mountain biking.

    Comment by montucky — May 10, 2017 @ 15:05 | Reply

    • Hello Terry.

Thank You loving my post. I have never tested a mountain bike. Bears sounds dangerous, but logging roads must be gorgeous and I am sure that I have some in Your posts.. This bike is about 20 years old and before it, I biked my late father’s bike, which was about 60 years old. It was former race bike, being very light, but I could not get any more tires fitting for it and so I had to buy a new one. Sigh.

      Have a nice day!

  13. What a gorgeous landscape to discover by bike! Cycling is a nice alternative to walking/hiking as it’s a pleasant way not only to manage longer distances in a rather good time but also to see quite a lot!
Beautiful shots of the coastal region as well as of the flowers or the modern architecture, Matti. I enjoyed your post very much! I hope the temperatures will rise a bit and the sun will reappear. It’s – sorry to express it a bit drastically – lousy cold as present! The birds built nests and obviously started already to breed – now the little ones are hatching but we still might expect night frost …

Have a nice second half of the week! Warm regards, Michèle

    • Hello Michèle.

So nice comment Michèle. It has been cold here during many weeks – too many weeks. Everybody waits for a real spring. It was in the beginning of May about 30 year ago when Spiraea ‘Grefsheim’ in in full bloom. Now I am sure that In June sometimes. In our newspaper it was reported about little bird in a nest was found dead. Sad.

We wish that blueberries’ flowers will not freeze in June. You probably know that in Finland we have so called Freedom to roam law (“Das Recht des Jedermanns”). It includes among others picking berries freely in the nature and much more.

      Have a nice day. Matti

Thank You. My mom and my wife have washed also. I remember very well when in Helsinki we washed our carpets when a tourist bus full with French stopped at Kaivopuisto. My daughter, who speaks French as a native, gave a presentation on the topic. Among them, some men who wanted to test his skills. Everybody has great fun.

  17. Look at all of those wonderful paths! It looks a little chilly by what you are wearing. I am interested in the carpet washers. Are they cleaning their own carpets or can you hire them?

    Comment by Sue Slaght — May 11, 2017 @ 00:44 | Reply

    • Hello Sue.

Thank You. Yes, it was spring and cold wind came from the sea. I have a weak blood circulation in my hands and legs, which is why I used gloves and a windproof sport jacket from Nürnburgring. I am glad that You noticed those cart washers. People wash only their own. I have a good post from traditional carpet washing in Helsinki and in Nurmijärvi. I suggest You to see it, because it illuminates the matter much better and shows how to dry them after washing.

    • Hello Emily

Thank You for Your kind comment. My photos were from last summer. This summer we will drive to Oulu next week after Samba Carnivals in Helsinki. You should visit Samba carnivals. It is on Saturday June 11the and the parade begins at 1500. We will be there. Of course, I have post from one previous years.

Next big happening is in Turku where Tall ships visit. This happening is only every fourth years. We visit it on Friday 21th. We will arrive by train from Oulu on previous Thursday staying one night at home, then to Turku by train and after seeing those mighty Tall ships we again take train back to Turku. If possible, visit this happening.

If You are planning to take road trips in Finland, drive alongside the western coastline. In many towns, there are gorgeous, colorful and old towns. In Naantali, there is Moominworld. On the way to the north, there is one of my favorite place called Kalajoki sand beaches. From there You could drive to Oulu and spend nights at Nallikari beach. If this will come true, then email me just if we are at that moment in Oulu and we could a take nice cup of coffee somewhere.

Three links to get better ideas:

      Naantali.
      Kalajoki sand dunes.
      Arctic beach of Nallikari.

By the way, do You know that quite near to Your home Cherry Tree Park. We just today check when Cherry Trees are booming, It seemed that in one or two weeks. This park is very near to Roihuvuori Vater tower.

Happy weeked to You and Yours.

      • You are a wealth of information, Matti! I think I’ll be heading to Turku with my husband’s parents in two weeks. The tall ships sound like fun; perhaps we’ll do a family trip to see them. I do enjoy all things nautical.
I saw another blog about Kalajoki beach. It looks beautiful! I will certainly email you if we make any trips that way. I want to see as much of Finland as I can while we’re here.
I will look for Cherry Tree Park. There is so much beauty here, and I haven’t even seen a Finnish summer yet! Thank you for all the wonderful information. I enjoy having a natives knowledge.
        I hope you’re having a good week.

How nice that You will visit Turku with Your husband’s family. There are four main attractions.

          1. Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum.

This museum is must when Turku. In Finland, we have few similar, but this one is gorgeous. Believe me.

          2. Catedral de Turku.

Old and worth for a visit. Although I love old wooden churches around in Finland, this one is also must to visit.

          3. Turku castle. I have photos, not made ever a post. It is full of history.

          4. Walking along the river Aura. It is beautiful walk. The area is full of restaurants and coffees.

I am sure that You and Yours will enjoy Turku.

This weekend we will visit Roihuvuori and its Cherry trees. Let’s hope that they are blooming now.
