Arctic hill of Ruka / Colina ártica de Ruka / Colline Arctique de Ruka

In English:

It was in 2008 in May when we hired a cheap log cabin for one week on Arctic hill of Ruka (818 kilometres / 508 miles) from my home). Here in the Southern part summer just stared to enter and birches had small leaves. It was great pleasure to drive thru Finland to the North and admire how landscape was changing little by little.

After first night we had “shocking” surprise. Snow or better sleet was everywhere. I had already changed summer tires in the beginning of April and I was afraid how I mange to drive in snow. But all went good. During day snow melted and during night it snowed more. We walked very much in surroundings on roads & paths and one visit in my mind is climbing on the lower part of ski jumping hill (jumping record 148 meters / 485 feet). I had to encourage my wife to climb up and she managed great.

Although the log cabin was very basic, it had all one needs. In Finland in every cottage we have Sauna and so it was also in this log cabin. In these photos I took, I was using also my first digital camera (shirt pocket camera) with 5.0 megapixels from 2004. Maybe You notice the difference with my second digital camera from 2006 with 8.3 megapixels.

  1. Now that’s my kind of holiday – no lying beside a swimming pool getting sun burnt! The cabins look really great, bright and modern inside. As for your photographs, they’re of the usual amazing quality, despite you saying it was a smaller camera. You’re a wonderful photographer.

    • Hello Jackie.

Sometimes, but very seldom, I like to stay on pool. Then only few hours during a week. When on holiday, I am also missing to do something, to see, to experience, to get new impulses, to get acquainted with local architecture, culture etc. Last spring in Phuket, we were exploring the area, walking enormously and spending only some hours on beach.

This place Ruka is situated nicely, because one can fly to Kuusamo which is very near to Ruka, by train to quite near place called Kemijärvi or by car there are possibilities to make daily sightseeings to some interesting places. It was just here when we for example visited that International Coffee Cup Museum in Posio. Also the Polar Circle very close. Anyway, our small vacation was successful.

      Thank You leaving Your comment.

  2. I have to agree with Jackie that these photos have amazing quality. You are a wonderful photographer. I enjoyed all of the these seeing beautiful Finland. How nice to stay in a log cabin and I just love all the wood inside including the wooden ceiling. The snow is lovely! And is that you wife? What a lovely photos of her! What a nice small vacation. Now, off to find your wooden windmills.🙂

    • Hello Anna.

I glad I am that my photos pleased You. Yes, she is my wife, trying to smile although she was afraid, because climbing those 496 steep steps were “frightening” to climb.

      Thank You for Your comment.

  3. Good evening, Matti,
There are beautiful photos and you are a wonderful photographer. The simple wooden homes like it very much. The interior of the kitchen looks fabulous. I think that all there is what you need for a few days of vacation. The landscape looks very beautiful and animated for walking. As far as the eye can see, I saw no industry nearby. I think that everyone there can relax from everyday life. In two photos I saw snowy houses that looked like an igloo. Your wife, Anja, looked very happy and satisfied. I am grateful that I could look at this page, and look forward to the next pictures. You and Anja, I wish you well on your daily routes. Thanks for the nice comment. e-mail follows.
    Dear greetings Christel

    • Hello Christel.

No, there is no industry nearby. That house looking like Igloo was actually an Ice Bar. It was closed, because the winter season just passed and summer season was beginning in two weeks. Nice to hear also that that You liked my photos.

    • Salut Frammy.

Voila!

      Belle journèe.
