Juuka village and semiprecious stones / Pueblo de Juuka pueblo y piedras semipreciosas / Juuka village et pierres semi-précieuses

In English:

Juuka village and nearby it is Stone Village. In this village there is Stone shop. The stone shop offers to everybody something, yes indeed, my photos prove it. It is part of company which is specialized to make fireplace from soap stones. The village itself is small having few wooden houses.

This post is fourth part of my posts. Three previous are:

We hired a summer vacation cottage by the lake for one week
Koli National Park
Bomba house

So why not visit in the shop which sells beautiful jewels, walk around in the village of Juuka thru my photos from 2009.

  1. What a lovely village. It looks like a place that people would go to heal. I love the egg shaped stones, so smooth. The decorative items and jewellery look splendidly ornate. A beautiful post.

  2. You are certainly right about there being something for everyone in that stone shop! What a great assortment of stones!

I enjoyed your photos of the village and the area. I assume that is a log flume that still has water running through it? Beautiful area!

    • Thank You Terry.

I am glad that You saw and understand “log flume”. When we saw it at first time, it took few seconds to understand it. I hope that they occasionally present its works for tourists because our world has changed since then it was in “daily” use.

      Happy week-end!

      • Flumes much like that were used in this area around the last part of the 1800’s and some of the structures remain, although none that I know of have water in them now.

  3. Something for everyone, indeed. I bet you can even pan for gold! 🙂

    Comment by Ginnie — May 31, 2013 @ 08:15 | Reply

    • Hi Ginnie.

Panning gold is not generally done here, but we have two “famous places” where it is done yet today. They are Tankavaara and Lemmenjoki. From Juuka distances are Juuka – Tankavaara 691km / 429mi and Juuka – Lemmenjoki 783km / 483 mi. Distances from Helsinki (Capital of Finland) are: Helsinki – Tankavaara 1050km / 652mi and Helsinki Lemmenjoki 1144km / 711mi. Next panning contests are hold in Tankavaara in July, 21th, 2013. Welcome panning gold.

      Have a great day!

  4. Wow, those eggs are beautiful, I too like the small, plain coloured smooth ones, but a close second are the black smooth ones with the gold painted decoration… wow, wow!
My kids would be sprinting around that play area in a flash and that log fume from Terry’s comment looks fun, (I had to google what a log fume was), I would sit on that nice and soft looking “sofa”too LOL

  7. The stones are absolutely beautiful. I like ‘eggs’ very much. The sculptures (both stone and wood) are fascinating. I enjoyed your photos of the village itself. I got a similar picture of my wife on a swing we encountered on one of our hikes.

    Comment by George — May 31, 2013 @ 14:06 | Reply

    • Hi George.

Swings of this type were popular among the youth in former days. Nowadays they are categorized “dangerous”, because they went around the shaft (360 degrees). So man cannot swing anymore around and that is why the rotation around is limited. They needed, I presume, minimum two people to swing around.

      Happy week-end!

  9. Bonjour Matti,
    Bises

  11. The ancient Indians where I live carved soap stone into smoking pipes in the shape of animals, like this one.

I wasn’t sure what the structure was that you photographed here.

    Comment by Deb Platt — May 31, 2013 @ 18:03 | Reply

    • Hi Deb.

Thank You. Thank You for Your interesting info. I did not know it. I recalled in my mind stories of Cowboys and Native Indians written by famous (at least in Finland) Zane Gray, but in those books which I have read (huge amount) he never mentioned smoking pipes in the shape of animals. Smoking pipes of Native Indians are well known in Finland.

      Have a great week-end!
