    • Hi TBM.

Thank You for Your comment. The small town of Savonlinna is my absolute favorite town in Finland. When visiting in Finland, then this is a must.

      Happy week-end!

  2. What a charming story! The weather is perfect and so are the views of the castle (and everything else). It looks like fun 🙂

    • Hello Megtraveling.

It is on a sunny day a great pleasure to cruise on some lake onboard of historic, vintage steam ship. I love to cruise, because then it is time to throw away daily rush.

Thank You commenting. Have a wonderful day!

  3. The castle is beautiful, but I also enjoyed seeing the boats and ships in the harbor. Thanks for showing us this pretty little town and the area around it. Are you going to buy the house that is for sale?

    Comment by seniorhiker — June 1, 2012 @ 15:17 | Reply

    • Hi George.

Thank You. I love those small, historic steam boats. To cruise onboard of them one can feel that he makes a time travel. Well, well, I think that the house is too expensive for us. 🙂

      Have a happy week-end!

  4. Looks like you had a lovely day! Great shots, all of them. The last one reminds me of Northern Ontario, the area around the 30,000 islands in Georgian Bay, a part of Lake Huron.

    Thanks again for sharing 🙂

    • Hello Connie.

Nice comment, thank You. It was interesting to read Your comparison with Georgian Bay. The amount of islands is great. In Finland we have 75 818 islands totally and number of lakes is 187 888. One has to remember that our country is small. The town of Savonlinna with its castle of St. Olaf’s Castle (in Finnish Olavinlinna) is situated on lake district.

      Happy week-end!

  5. That must have been a very pleasant cruise! I would have liked to have been there. It would be relaxing and pleasant to see all of those sights while relaxing in comfort to do so. I love seeing the castle and trying to imagine what it must have been like to live there and what it must have taken to build it. Somehow photo 34 appeals to me most of all.

    Comment by montucky — June 1, 2012 @ 16:28 | Reply

    • Hi Terry.

Photo number 34 is cool photo indeed. Well, the castle was built against the enemy which came from the East. I have read about the castle and life during the peacetime has been quite monotonous. Inside of the castle there lived as civilians as solders.

      Thank You commenting.

      Have a lovely week-end!

    • Hello Alskamom.

I am glad that You like my photos. This town called Savonlinna is one of my absolute favorite towns in Finland. In winter is nearly “dead” and in summer tourists pour to the town from all around the world. Its highlight is Opera Festivals inside the murals of the castle. Some year I want to visit there. Thank You for Your comment.

  12. I am amazed when I see the stout stone walls perched on the river, how sophisticated the building skills were in the medieval period. To think every one of those stones was moved by human power. Each arch had to be created by a worker selecting the stone that would fit exactly. Just getting the materials for the mortar to the tops of the walls would be a difficult task, let alone the stones. I certainly enjoyed my cruise! Happy Weekend, Matti! Janet

    Comment by Heart To Harp — June 2, 2012 @ 20:07 | Reply

    • Hi Janet.

How glad I am when You commented my post. This small town Savonlinna and its castle called Olavinlinna are very close to my heart. That’s why I have made many posts presenting them. Around the castle there is fast flowing river and stones are transported to the island during hard winter when the river was frozen. It must have been really hard job to build it by human power.

Happy week-end to You and Yours!

  23. Of all the places I rested my head in Finland, Savonlinna was my favorite – not just for the beautiful castle, but I also liked wandering around the little islands, and the feeling of peace and quiet throughout…. I had to check your date – you visited in early June? I visited in mid-June (around the 15th or so) and the tents for the Opera Festival were up then too – It would be nice to visit the castle without the tents!

    Comment by Dawn — August 13, 2013 @ 06:30 | Reply

    • Hi Dawn.

That’s right, without tents. BTW, when You visited Savonlinna, did You see small town called Mikkeli on Your way? It is my new home town since last November and it is very near to Savonlinna. From Mikkeli it is made cruises to Astuvansalmi Rock paintings which are old. My post from this cruise will be sometimes in fall. Thank You for Your kind comments!

BTW, when You were in Turku did You have possibility to visit

      Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum.

      Have a great day!
