Reindeer2 are curious / Renos2 son curiosos / Rennes2 sont curieux / Renas2 são curiosas

In English:

We went on a road trip and met reindeers

Background information.

I know that the title is not the best, but I wanted to point out that during this road trip to the northern parts of Finland, we met reindeers everywhere! The explanation for this is that the area belongs to the northeastern reindeer herding area which is larger than the northwestern area. In 2019, there were 4461 reindeer smashes although due to modern technique to warn about collisions of reindeers. This is so called the reindeer alarm application called in Finnish Porokello. Cons of Porokello (personal opinion): Gives a false feeling of security. Overall ratings of this application are for and against based on the user experiences. Many oncoming cars blinked their headlights to warn about reindeer – it worked great!

General information.

The length of our trip was 2413km / 1499mi. It lasted 10 nights / 11 days. We spent one week in a rented summer cottage by the lake Polojärvi in the north. It was a fully equipped two-storied round log house and its jetty was very cool to sit in it in the afternoon and evenings. Silence was palpable. No sounds of a motorboats or personal watercrafts from the lake disturbed the peace! We visited also Kuusamo, Arctic Circle, Suomussalmi, Kemijärvi (two nights) and one night in Iisalmi on the return trip. On the way we drove 783km / 487mi straight to our destination.

Refutation of that reindeers eat only reindeer lichen. This what I have been taught. In practice we saw that they eat various green plants and their delicacy is fireweed or great willowherb known also rosebay.

Were there a lot of mosquitoes? Not so much! It was amazing because it was claimed in the south! Temperature varied between 15°C / 59°F to 26°C / 79°F. Rainy days: one day partly rain. Some cloudy days yes. General feeling: Successful vacation. Photos taken about 800. Pros: Pure nature, nearby lake, friendly cute reindeers, row boat, gorgeous jetty, peaceful place, own peace, hiking possibilities at 4km / 2.5mi. Cons: car needed, nearest place of shopping at 48km / 30mi.

This post:

This post shows you that reindeer are curious. One morning when preparing our breakfast, I heard some kind of sounds of “footsteps” outside. I went to the window and saw one reindeer coming to the terrace. I shouted, my wife that get quickly your phone open and start shooting photos about it. At same time I searched my camera and took few photos. We were not prepared to this action, but we learnt that they organize surprises. This was a real surprise! One day when we went out, the whole reindeer family (5) was waiting for us at the tool shed, lying down in the shade under the birches. I was surprises and shot my first photos “too late”. We couldn’t guess that they wanted to introduce us to their fawns. What lovely little rogues!

Reindeer are always owned by someone!

No mucho!

Cela a duré 10 nuits / 11 jours.

Quels beaux petits lurons!

  2. It seems to me you have as much trouble with the reindeer as we have with the deer. They have a real pest in our little towns. They even go into our gardens to destroy our vegetables and the road kills are happening very often on our highways in Canada. Thank you for another great post, Sartenada!

I was surprised that reindeer are not afraid of humans. Some Japanese deer are not afraid of humans, but many deer seem afraid of humans. So when they encounter humans they run away.Have a good day!

  11. Hello (^^)
I enjoyed the reindeer’s friendly atmosphere.
I think the blinking of the headlights to inform the existence of reindeer is a very effective means.
I saw many deers when I went to work in Pennsylvania, USA. The local people were driving with care so that they would not collide with the car.

    Have a good day.

    • Hello Saganhama.

Blinking is excellent warning for fellow drivers. It is a funny thing – in south there are traffic cameras, in north reindeer do their works. Thank you very much for your kind words,

I love this cabin, however if you forgot to bring anything ( food or toilet rolls) it is rather a long way to shop. So I guess organisation is the key. Still well worth it in my opinion when you get such peace and a great view, right in the middle of nature. Really lovely photos.

  47. Sartenada – How wonderful for you that your camera was handy to get these shots. It is hard to say which one I liked best, maybe the first one that you showcased, looking in the door as if to say “well, don’t just stand there, let me in, okay?” I was sorry I didn’t get to “meet” the reindeer at the Christmas in July event at the Farm at Heritage Park due to the very hot day, but since I got such a close-up of these reindeer, I don’t feel so badly now. I had no idea they had such large antlers – and both male and females it seems, unlike our bucks and does (deer) here. The youngsters are worth showing off – the fawns with their stubby little antlers and the fur growing in patches … sweet and quite big babies. Thank you for sending me the link to see the reindeer post.

          • I just started interacting with a woman blogger from Berlin recently. That is one nice thing about blogging here … you get to meet people from all over the world. My father was from Frankfurt, Germany. I do not know where he is now – he decided he did not want to be part of the family any more and took off in 1984 (but not before he took all the money out of the bank and an annuity account, leaving my mother penniless. Thankfully the house was paid for and I lived at home – I have no siblings (or any family – I say that as I am you blog … I don’t publicize that fact on my own blog, though I suspect people have figured it out). I do not speak German – he never taught me how to speak German. I took French for years, including when I grew up in Canada before we moved to the U.S. in 1966, but I really don’t remember much of the French I learned.

            • OMG, Linda.

I am sorry for you when reading this. We know Frankfurt quite well. This is the fact that went many times, during the years, to buy clothes there. Their clothes are high quality, cheap and they fit all type of bodies. This was the real reason to my wife, because in my country she could not get easily suitable clothes for her body type – too long, too large etc. Nowadays the situation has become better. Thank you.

              Have a good day!

              • Matti – I have always been tall, even when I was a teenager and not only did I tower over my parents, but it was hard to get long-enough pants and my sleeves were always short. I started sewing my own clothes, but things improved when clothing manufacturers figured out all women were not 5’6″ (167 cms) tall.

Oh see. In Finland, the situation is the opposite. There are always suitable clothes for tall people, but not for short ones. Thank you again!
