Where? In Oulu. Where in Oulu? At the market square. When? On first Saturday after mid-February. How fast to get to Oulu from Helsinki? By air 1 hour, by rail about 5 hours and 25 minutes, 8 hours by bus and by car 7 – 8 hours, depending on Yours stops.

Intended for whom? Meant for everyone. Number of departures? Ten. Every departure consists of two reindeer sleighs. In one sleigh, there can be one or two competitors. Can others than Finns participate in the competition? Yes. Length of run? 50 meters / 54.5 yards plus stopping area 10 meters / 11 yards. What is the official name? Reindeer carnival.

The race, which we visited, was hold on Sunday the 18th of February 2018. This was the second time when we visited this unique race in the world. We watched six departures of ten. The speaker interviewed every participant, which revealed that, participants came from China, Germany, India, Iran, Hungary, Mexico and Finland.

Reindeers are fast and due to it, photographing is a challenge. For example, few years ago, the reindeer called Timon Tumma (Timo’s Dark) owned by Timo Vaarala run one kilometer in time 1.13.01. This means the velocity of 13.7 m/s = 49.3 km/h = 30.64mi/h! This world record is from the 2012. In Finland, there are reindeer cups for professionals during winter months.

After the finish line, there were three men assisting competitors to stop the race. Will I see You next year in Oulu?

La course, que nous avons visité, a eu lieu le dimanche 18 Février 2018. C’était la deuxième fois que nous avons visité cette course unique dans le monde. Nous avons regardé six départs de dix. Le présentateur a interviewé tous les participants, ce qui a révélé que les participants venaient Chine, Allemagne, Inde, Iran, Hongrie, Mexique et Finlande.

Mes deuxièmes et troisièmes photos montrent un renne qui a pris un faux départ et comment il a été empêché. Les rennes sont rapides et en raison de cela, la photographie est un défi. Par exemple il y a quelques années quand le renne appelé Timon Tumma (Foncé de Timo) appartenant à Timo Vaarala a couru un kilomètre dans le temps 1.13.01. Looks like the kids are having fun… but what about the reindeer? It is not very correct to subject them to this type of effort, which does not exist in nature.
As long as the weight to be carried is a maximum of ten/twenty kilograms… but on a small animal I saw the sled (which will already be heavy) with several children.
I have doubts. Like other “amusements” I do not believe that animals should be sacrificed just for fun.

  Thank You commenting. Have You seen reindeers live? Reindeer is very tough animal. It can easily pull easily two adults. Reindeer knows that this is race and they love competition. If You look my previous posts, then You know that they are eager to race. In addition, they love their owners. This winter I saw how a reindeer gave a kiss to its master. It closed eyes and seemed love the owner. It has feelings like any animal and show them.

Me encanta este post, querido Matti.
Estuve en Helsinki hace unos 6 años, pero lo que tu propones es algo muy diferente y siempre pones en mi mente el deseo de volver a la Finlandia que está fuera de la capital.
Esta carrera me parece muy atractiva.

  ¡No sabía que habías visitado Helsinki! Cerca de Helsinki hay muchos lugares que vale la pena visitar, pero nuestras partes del este y del norte ofrecen experiencias. Nos encanta Laponia (parte más al norte de Finlandia). La naturaleza, la gente amigable y el clima puro nos fascinan. En verano el sol de medianoche es una experiencia fantástica. En verano los viajes por carretera son casi obligatorios. Las partes orientales de nuestro país son salvajes y ofrecen sorpresas para un visitante.

Hello Matti, I remember your reindeer posts in the past. Whenever I have a look at your photos I get the feeling that not only young and old participantsof the race are rather excited but also the reindeer seem to have fun! Sometimes – in case of events where animals are involved – you wonder how they might think about the whole story but these gregarious animals are powerful, obviously need to run and are eager to race. 🙂 You can recognize this power particularly on the photo on which the reindeer started to canter.

What lovely photos you captured, Matti — I love the ones especially in which you can tell that the reindeer are galloping! It looks like some of the males were in the process of molting their antlers, though. As a child I was warned to be wary of deer who are molting their antlers because it can be painful (which makes them unpredictable). But maybe the reindeer are tame enough that it’s not a problem? Either way, very interesting!

      I understand very well those errors. Finnish is one of most difficult language in the world. Using it in poems gives huge possibility to say nearly everything. One simple example.
      
      Let us take word: akka, which means old hag, old female, bitch, old woman, old lady, missus wimp, queen.
      Let us add one letter in the beginning: Lakka, means cloudberry, varnish, lacquer, sealing vax, lacker.
      Let us add another letter in the beginning: Kakka, means poo, pooh, poop.
      Let us add another letter in the beginning: Takka, means fireplace.
      Let us add another letter in the beginning: Vakka, means bushel, basket.
      Let us add another letter in the beginning: Sakka, means sediment, deposit, lees.
      Let us add another letter in the beginning: Rakka, means fragmented rock.
      Let us add another letter in the beginning: Pakka, means pack, packet, bundle.
      When adding one letter in the beginning and two letters to the end: Jakkara, it means stool, taboret, tabouret.
      When adding one letter in the beginning and two letters to the end: Makkara, it means sausage.

        Thank You. After this short presentation of my language, You can imagine how awesome Finnish is. We Have long closed compound words, awesome palindromes which are short and long sentences. One classic example is: saippuakauppias, meaning soap merchant. We can write sentences which start with the same vocals. In the same sentence there can be successively same words, but which mean different things. Also sentences in which there are only vocals. There are hundreds of cases, which are only in Finnish. Okay, this ends my talk about Finnish, which is finally very curious and unique language in the world. No need to answer. 🙂

I enjoyed the expressions on the people’s faces as much as seeing the reindeer. It’s not hard to believe that reindeer can run being they are in the deer family,love their big dark eyes!

Looks like loads of fun… and open to anyone. I continue to be surprised at how small the reindeer are. BTW, a herd of black tail deer call our property home. Sometimes they come up to our screen door and put their nose up to it to see what we are doing! 🙂 –Curt

  The size of reindeer varies: Reindeer shoulder height is male 107 – 127 cm (42.1 in – 50.0 in), female 94 – 114 cm (37.0 in – 44.9 in). This winter there was a big one, but he bulked too much and thus it was not excellent racer. After one race removed. Oh, how nice to read about black tail deer. 🙂 Thank You.

Such lovely winter photos of the reindeer races and people. We hope to visit Helsinki this August for a couple days. There is 24 hrs. of sun than I believe.

  Such a lovely surprise to read Your comment. Thank You. You are warmly welcome. August is generally speaking great month to visit Finland. I have to disappoint you with the midnight sun. In August to see midnight sun is over even in the northernmost parts of Finland. Last year midnight sun in Nuorgam started in May 15th. and lasted 75 days. Nuorgam is he northernmost village of Finland and the European Union.
  
  Finland is long country. Its length is 1157 km / 719mi. Helsinki is situated in the south. Nights in the middle of Finland in Oulu, the place of reindeer race, last short time. It is twilight for a shirt time.
  
  Helsinki offers some excellent places for a visit. These two are must visit:
  
  Seurasaari Open-Air museum
  
  Historic maritime fortress of Suomenlinna
  
  Optional places for a visit:
  
  Rock church
  
  Helsinki Cathedral
  
  Uspensky Cathedral
  
  I suggest also to make Helsinki shoreline cruise
  
  Cruises starts here:
  
  Helsinki market place
  
  Nearby Helsinki there are some small towns which are worth for a visit. The best is Porvoo, which is easy to reach by bus in one hour. My winter photos of Porvoo:

Matti, my favorite place is Rovaniemi in Lapland and especially Santa Claus Village where I have been visiting several times. I wish I had had a better camera. This is one of my videos from Santa Claus Village in YouTube. Santa Claus is not so interested in filming since his focus is on giving gifts to children!

  - Great sense of humor! Are reindeer friendly? Easily domesticated? I’d always thought they were brown. They’re beautiful in white. The ones in vanilla-and-Oreo-cookie colors are, too. Wow.

Did You know that at the Arctic Circle nearby the town Rovaniemi, You could visit the log house of the first Lady Eleanora Roosevelt? It is modest, but worth for a visit due to its historic value.

  Thank You leaving your kind comment. I am glad that you loved these cute animals. When hiking in the north you can meet them, because they roam free. We have also free reindeer races, which are open for everyone! They are unique in the world. These races are full of fun and they are not at all serious. Reindeers are fast. World record is 30.64mi/h. This means that shooting race photos is not at all easy, because situations vary very fast. I last year I participated in this race and I can say that it was fantastic experience.
