In English:

The best Snow Castle photos along the years.

World’s biggest Snow Castle situates in the town of Kemi. The distance between Helsinki and Kemi is 712 km / 442.4 mi. The Distance from the Arctic Circle is 125 km / 77. Flying from Helsinki takes 1 hour 30 minutes, which means that if You are in hurry, flying makes it possible to visit the Snow Castle in one day, whereas by train it takes about 7 hours.

Snow Castle, what it is? It is a castle made of snow and every winter it must be rebuilt and every year it has a new theme. Inside there is Snow Restaurant, Ice Bar, Snow Chapel and Snow Hotel. Many tourists love to sleep in Snow Hotel due to gorgeous experience; others come to get married in Snow chapel. Best time for a visit, in my opinion, is from February to the beginning of March. Best time to shoot photos, is at twilight (In February sunset is about 4:30 pm) and after the sunset in the dark.

Year 2017 brings huge changes for this awesome winter destination. Snow Castles move to a new area, to the center by the sea, which means better and new possibilities. For example new Seaside Glass Villas for watching Northern Lights. Each Glass Villa’s size is 21m² and they have small kitchen and bedroom. The theme of the year 2017 is Finland 100 years. More detailed in Visit Kemi.

Personally, I love to stroll inside the castle, admire ice, snow sculptures and to peep inside Snow Hotel rooms. Ice and snow sculptures are gorgeous and they tell stories about the theme of the year. Later cafeteria invites me to enjoy a cup of hot coffee with a doughnut and to listen to murmur of conversations of different languages spoken round the world.

My collection of photos are from 2006 – 2013. Last six photos I took in winter 2016.

  2. That looks so amazing. It must be some work to built it every year so beautifully. I have seen it in a James Bond film once. I just cannot understand how you can sleep in a ice bed. Is it not too cold or does it not melt when you sleep from your body heat? You must have so many layers on to keep warm there, it look sooooo cold. Amazing features and such detail, I am just in awe! Thanks for showing this to us.

    • Hello Ute.

I copied next text from Snowhotels page to give some answer:

“Sleeping overnight in the SnowHotel room, made completely of snow, beautifully lighted and decorated, will surely give you one of the most unique Arctic experiences. The temperature is always around -5 degrees Celsius but the comfortable bed with a white sheet and lambskin cover, a pillow, a fleece sheet and a sleeping bag designed for Arctic conditions ensures a good night sleep.
The SnowHotel is part of the gigantic SnowCastle built annually in the City of Kemi. The SnowCastle is open from the end of January until beginning of April.
In the SnowHotel there are rooms suitable for singles, couples as well as bigger groups. The maximum capacity of the SnowHotel is 48 persons. The whole SnowHotel and the rooms inside are made of snow.
The fresh, about -5 degrees Celsius breathing-air, will guarantee you sweet dreams inside a well-equipped sleeping-bag on a good bed. You will have a memorable sleeping-experience in the SnowHotel!
Sleeping in the SnowHotel includes also breakfast and visit to the SnowCastle.”

Thank You leaving Your kind comment.

      Have wonderful day!

      • Thanks so much, I guess if you have Arctic sleeping bags, it should be ok. But the nose must be frozen, hehe. It was 13 degrees in my bedroom this morning, I found that rather cold. Surely an experience. Thanks so much!

        • Hi Ute.

Are You talking about 13 degrees Celsius? If so, it is indeed very cold. In Finland, we have triple glazed windows, which stop cold coming inside. Also balconies are glazed, but summer there is hot inside balcony and we need parasol or blinds. Matti.

          • Yes Celsius, Triple glazed windows sound good to me! Probably I need that in Winter too in my bedroom!

  8. The photos are incredible! To think that all of this beautiful work just melts away in summer.. When I lived in Kokkola, they’d have ice sculptures in the town center during winter. I miss that. They looked similar to the ones inside the snow hotel.

    • Hello Pooja @lostinprettyeurope.

Thank You. Very nice that in Kokkola there were ice sculptures also. We lived four years in Mikkeli and in 2015, there were also gorgeous ice sculptures. Sad side of it was that during first night many sculptures were violated. 😦 So sad!

I really enjoyed to see some of the spectacular artwork and some of the great, fanciful ideas again! So pleased that you added new photographs of 2016 to your latest post! It’s interesting to read about the new plans for 2017! I’m anxious to see the result, Matti. ^^
Thanks for your gorgous photos! Always a joy to visit your blog!

    • Hello Michèle.

In our country, especially in Lapland, there is a heavy “battle of tourists”. Many tourist centers use much money to lure tourist to Lapland and this place is nearly forgotten for tourists, which I have noticed (my personal opinion). During last years the amount of tourists from Far East have been increased. I love this place, although in the town of Kemi, there is not so much to see, but I love its arctic atmosphere. Especially I love to walk inside the castle and admire its ice and snow carvings. Thank You for Your praising comment.

      Have a good day! Matti.

    • Hi Sue.

Thank you for your kind comment. At Christmas time day is shorter. In midsummer in the North, there are white nights, no nights. Even at the level where Oulu is, nights are not black, but short time twilight. Cruising on some of our 187 888 lakes, is awesome in midsummer. We love cruises on our lakes, because many cruise boats are very old steamships.

      Happy weekend!

And yet somehow that makes these ice castles all the more precious, doesn’t it? Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful photos.

    • There is one must visit place in Finland – the Arctic Circle. I have many posts, of course, from there. Can You imagine, that there is the Log Cabin built for Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 – 1962) who visited there in 1950. Eleanor Roosevelt was the wife of the President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 – 1945).
