Church of St. Nicholas (Kotka, Finland)

This neoclassical church is situated in the town called Kotka. From Helsinki it takes by car to reach it 1 hours 24 minutes. The distance is from Helsinki is 132.96km / 82.6mi. It has big port and there is the Maritime Museum of Finland. The number of inhabitants is about 53000.

Church of St. Nicholas is Orthodox church. It was built between 1799 and 1801. Inside there is great art, sculptures and paintings. Did you know that during the Orthodox mass generally are standing? Of course, there are some seats for old and for those who are physically unable stand. After photos I will give links to my previous four Orthodox churches, which I have presented. My favorite is Monastery of New Valamo.

Another beautiful Finnish church Matti. We visited Kotka for the Tall Ships Race and I remember seeing this church from the exterior – what a shame that we didn’t take a look inside! Hope you have a good week.

    - Yes indeed. Serving my country is natural. Yearly about 30000 young man are called to perform conscription. We are Small country, so that is why the number is small. Later many of them are called to refresher training. Thank you Takami.

This church is beautiful, really more like a museum with the artwork, woodwork, paintings and icons! And all the color! No, I did not know that the congregation stands for Mass, how interesting! I will be checking out more churches! I wonder how many we would get in our churches, if we had to stand through Mass? Everyone would be at the short ones I bet!

  How nice thoughts you wrote. Thank you. I am glad that you checked some our churches. They differ from each other depending if they are situated in town or on the countryside. On countryside churches are mainly wooden churches and their beautiful and colorful bellowers are separated from churches. Our churches are not decorated with gold; they are modest offering beautiful chandeliers, pulpits, altars, stained glass windows etc. I have nice collection of these among my posts. If you still are interested in Orthodox churches, then check our only one monastery, Monastery of New Valamo, in Heinävesi.
