Hooked on lace2 / Enganchado en encaje2 / Accroché sur la dentelle2 / Enganchado na renda2

In English:

Hooked on lace – Part 2

It was in summer 2016, when we visited to old vicarage, called Kulttuuripappila (Pastoral House of Culture) Sylvi (1804), in Pieksämäki. The distance between Helsinki and Pieksämäki is 306km / 190mi. Why we drove to Pieksämäki? Well, there was very interesting, maybe unique exhibition of laces.

Lady Silja Keränen inherited a big amount crocheting yarns from her mother in 2008. After thinking for a while what to do with them, she decided to crochet. Wise decision! Models Silja searched from Internet and she crocheted the majority of them from photos. Until now, she has crocheted more than 450 crochets and in the exhibition, there were about 400 crochets. Think about it.

Enjoy these lace doilies!

  11. Absolutely beautiful! No matter if I look at the white lace motives in front of a dark background or at blue, red etc. ones placed in front of a white background. I recognized wonderful flower motives, spiderwebs, snowflakes and a lot of other motives.
I think a lot of concentration (and counting!) is needed to produce such an accurate pattern and to get such uniform double or treble crochets! Think of the thread tension and the tenuous material. It’s amazing!
Thanks for showing these pieces of art, Matti.

    Have a nice week!

  15. There are many crochet patterns here that I have made myself. Each doiley is hours of work, especially if the yarn is very fine which it would be in the most delicate looking ones. It is as fine as sewing thread. Can be very hard on the hands. I have just finished crocheting the edge to a queensize bedspread I made nearly 40 years ago and never got around to doing the last row! I made it from kalastajanlanka my mother brought back for me from Finland. I couldn’t get it here in Australia. It is a very strong mercerised crochet yarn, probably a size 10 in thickness, making the bedspread quite heavy. It’s a vintage popcorn star pattern. I’m very proud of that one – it took me the best part of five years to do.

  25. ¡Muchisimas gracias! Those pieces remind me so much of my grandmother! I still have some of the doilies she crocheted.

  26. Amazing beautiful lace works, Matti! I know how many hours are behind each one of these lovely centerpieces… I did some, quite a few years ago, when I still had time and a lot of patience.
These remember me the snowflakes, each other different from another. I believe there have been used different types of crochets, the most exquisites are done with a special tool in Italian called “filetto” (never was able to use it) which make the most raffinate embroideries in laces.
Thank you for sharing, have a lovely night :-)claudine

    • Hello Claudine.

Thank You for Your interesting comment. It was nice to read that You have done these also. When seeing these live, I said to my wife – my hat. It was fantastic to see old vicarage and all these hanging on walls.

      Have a good day!

  29. What craftsmanship! Thank you for showcasing some of the beautiful samples. The very intricate ones remind me of handmade pieces I have seen in Burano, Italy.

  31. That was quite a day out, Sartenada! There are some beautiful art works in those churches. 🙂 🙂

    • Hello Johanna.

Yes, it was indeed. We do not have not so many medieval churches in Finland, because we have wooden churches on countryside and during the years flashes and heating have burned them. On some places there are today left the third church and those two have burnt. Sigh.

      Have a good day!

  32. Sartenada, thank you for much for sharing this unique museum. I’m taken with the creative skill of these crocheted pieces and they also remind me of my grandmother’ (Mormor’s) crochet work. Wonderful photos and a delight to scroll through the pictures.

    • Hello Annika.

It was not museum, men det var gammal prästgård. I am very happy that You left Your praising comment. Thank You.

      Have a good day!

  33. Wow! I never thought there would be an exhibition for crotchet items. Crotchet reminds me of the doilies that my mother’s generation used to decorate their homes with. Very lovely.
