Seven churches’ tour – introduction

In July 2018 we made a bus tour of seven churches. We noticed this awesome tour in a local newspaper and loved the idea immediately. The tour lasted all day and it included one coffee with snacks and one meal. One coffee meal we paid ourselves. Tour passed on the southwestern area where I have visited seldom. Our group was big consisting of 50 enthusiasts. On the tour we had two guides. The one, real gentleman, who guided us back and forth to the area. The other was local guide, real Lady, which we picked at the destination. This Lady was specialized in the area and guided us in the churches. She was a real “databank” sharing exact information about churches, their history and even some legends. This was necessary, because churches were old. Six churches, of which one was former monastery church, were stone churches and one wooden church.

Here are churches which we visited: church of Raisio, church of Masku, church of Nousiainen, church of Lemu, church of Askainen, church of Merimasku and church of Naantali.

Church of nobility in Askainen

The name of this church comes most probably from that its costs were paid by the nobles. Inside the church on its walls there are many funeral coats of arms. Quite near there is Louhisaari manor which belonged to the Fleming family since the middle of 15th century. When it was time to go to church then first went the nobles and then common people. Self-evident fact was of course that the nobles had their own area with own seats. The age of the church is not known exactly, but is built on the same place where was the first wooden church. Its current layout is from 1653.

The bell tower is from 1779. The baroque style oaken pulpit is German origin and was ordered from the court carpenter in Flensburg, Germany. The door of church has an old lock. The crucifix is from the 17th century. Inside You can find for example beautiful hour glass and gorgeous grandfather clock which was donated to the church in 1823. The altar piece is from 1859, presents the Savior in Gethsemane.
Church of Askainen belongs to the road churches, which means that they are open for visitors in summer time. Inside there is always a guide to serve You. The distance from Helsinki to Turku is 162 km / 101 mi and by rail it takes about two and half hours. From Turku to Askainen takes about 40 minutes by bus. After photos, I give some links to those to who want more detailed information.

  1. Like the other churches in this series, the age of this one is amazing as is the lifetime of all of the artifacts. It’s a beautiful structure too.

  2. Hello! Are there two types of churches, wooden and stone? It is impossible to distinguish from photos, but all are beautiful indoors. Have a good day!

    • Hello wakasahs15th.

Yes, two types. My next post presents a red wooden Church which is said to be the sixth oldest wooden church in continuous use in Finland. It is the first wooden church in this series. The last church in this series will be a former Catholic Convent. After it then in December I show my photos from the Alpine model railway exhibition. Thank You.

      Have a good day too.

  5. Fascinating photo essay as usual Matti! And with your usual high quality photos too. Loved it.

Incidentally, we’re coming to Helsinki in December (well we’ve seen it in Spring, Summer and Autumn as we’ve been in June, July and August) and wondered if there’s anything you particularly recommend we should see/do at that time of year?

    • Hello Stella.

Thank You commenting. Well, if we talk strictly about Helsinki, then December 6, is our Independence Day, which means generally everything are closed. Helsinki offer for Example Christmas Market, which are often very near to the Cathedral of Helsinki. I do not know, if You have visited the town of Rovaniemi and thus naturally the Arctic Circle. Rovaniemi is easy to reach by train or by flying. We prefer night trains. Snow in Helsinki is possible in December, but sometime it melts away. Those northern parts offer guaranteed snow.

Here are my Christmas Market in Helsinki photos:

      Christmas Markets 2

      Have a good day!

P.S. If You will come to Helsinki, then there is in Espoo a gorgeous Alpine model railway exhibition. The length of the track was 511 meters / 1677 ft. It has been built for 20 years. Last Exhibition days in December are: Saturday 8.12.2018 at 10-17
      Sunday 9.12.2018 at 11-17
      Tuesday 11.12.2018 at 16-19
      Thursday 13.12.2018 at 16-19

I will publish my post about in December5, 2018.

        • Very nice to hear. Then it is open Saturday 1.12.2018 at 10-17, Sunday 2.12.2018 at 11-17 in Sello. What about visiting a small charming town called Porvoo? It is only one hour from Helsinki by bus. Or what about to visit The Finnish Railway Museum in Hyvinkää. Les than hour from Helsinki by train. These two side hops offer something additional to Your Helsinki visit. There is also one possibility to visit the castle of Hämeenlinna. By train about one hour. When visiting the castle, You could make a small walk around the lake by the castle at the same time. It may take about 40 minutes.

  6. Hello Matti,
Thank you for introducing another fascinating church with rich history. The coats of arms of the nobility are incredible, along with the intricate wood carvings, paintings. It’s amazing how such architecture survives (and remains in use) for hundreds of years!

  8. Hello, Sartenada.

    It’s like a church with a history!
The appearance is also tasteful. Inside ornaments? Also, it is made carefully one by one, I feel the history in hue.

    • Hello George.

Thank You. I love bell towers and I have many photos of them around Finland. Woodwork is indeed amazing and when we think that they are very old, so we have to raise our hats to these masters who made them.

      Have a good day!

  11. Beautiful post, Matti! Isn’t it interesting to see all of these family crests and wonder what happened to these once-powerful families? I presume their descendants are still around, of course, but their influence has certainly waned.

Thank You commenting so nicely. Yes, it is interesting indeed. Some family names are known yet today by me, but I have not been thinking about it / them. 🙂

  12. Hello Matti, thanks for presenting another beautiful church! This time I extremely admire the wood carvings which are so rich in detail! Interesting to read above (at the beginning) about the interior equipment which obviously was added gradually during the centuries.
Again I enjoyed it very much to learn more about the old street churches you visited!

Have a nice week and best wishes to both of you!

    • Hello Michèle.

How nice again to read Your praising comment and to see that You appreciated my post and its photos. Making these posts and checking backgrounds of these churches has been a challenge to me, but I loved to do it very much. My next post will present the sixth oldest wooden church in continuous use in Finland. It is beautiful, but small. Thank You.

All the best to You and Yours,

      Matti

  20. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful visits, we are defiantly coming to Finland next year. Are the churches still open in September, I hope they are 🙂 I am really looking forward to our visit 🙂 Lynne

    Comment by blosslyn — October 26, 2018 @ 00:32 | Reply

    • Hello Lynne.

Thank You visiting my blog. I am sorry, because in September they are not open. Here is the list of road / street churches with their open times in 2018:

      https://www.tiekirkot.fi/tiekirkot/

Tie = road, kirkot = churches

Here is the list of churches where are Poor-man statues:

      https://www.tiekirkot.fi/teemakirkot/vaivaisukko-kirkot/

Vaivaisukko = poor-man. Sometimes poor-man statues are on the walls of churches, bell towers and many have been transferred inside the churches.

This one in Närpes is always worth for a visit:

      Historical church stables

Okay, what now? If You tell in which You are interested, then I could find them easily.

      Happy upcoming weekend!

This sounds great! I am very happy when reading this note. It seems that You would be the first one living abroad who can present our Poor-man statues to the world and thus make them to the public! Thank You. Welcome!

          P. S. I will send a short letter and tell about another thing so that check if You are interested in it.
