Reindeer driving competition / Competición de conducción de renos / Compétition de conduit de rennes / Competição da condução da rena

In English:

In Oulu, there was held cool reindeer driving completion. The length of run was only 50 meters / 54.5 yards. It was part of reindeer carnival and driving competition was intended for all. I saw this happening for the first time in my life. For children there was peaceful reindeer and toboggan rides.

When participation was announced for 12 departures, it took only a couple of minutes, when all departures were fully booked. Big surprise for me was that participants came from Finland, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, and Australia. This meant that competition was international, not national. Maybe next year in February, we’ll see You among reindeer drivers!

Well, I know that in Finland there are reindeer competitions. This completion was not reindeer competition, but reindeer driving competition! There is big difference, because spectators had possibility themselves to drive! We could compare it that in Oman in camel races spectators themselves could ride camel race.

    Comment by superkamui — March 5, 2016 @ 10:50 | Reply

    • Hello Watayuki.

Thank You. I am not surprised, but glad that there are reindeers in Japan. Already in 1975, reindeers was transported to Japan. They were transported to the town called Karuisawa By Finns. Finns again trasported to Hokkaido in the 1980s and 1990s almost 200 reindeers and nowadays there are about 300.

      Comment by Sartenada — March 5, 2016 @ 11:53 | Reply

      • Karuisawa is located in high altitude, and Hokkaido is in high latitude, so both area have cool climate. Therefore I suppose reindeer can be adapted to there to some extent.

      • That’s perfect. I put poro as Finnish for reindeer on my note. It was such fun researching and writing the post.

  45. Also, what do reindeer smell like? Is it a musky smell? And was there coffee odor or tea or some other food cooking. Every carnival I’ve been to has the smell of fried dough and sausages. Was that smell on the air?

    • Hi Brenda.

Reindeer do not smell. I have never noticed it, but I have met reindeers only in winter. They are kind and shy animals, but so lovely.

Reindeers can be met in summer or in winter here:

      Arctic Circle in winter.

      Happy Thursday!

      • Thanks for clarifying for me. I had a great time imagining myself there. Like I was teleported, but still in my own warm house. 🙂 Thanks for collaborating with me. It was a fun to do.

    • Hello El Caldero de Nimue.

Reindeers live in our northernmost parts called Lapland part and on Arctic hills, they roam freely among hikers. Here is one example from our hiking, beginning:

North of the Arctic Circle 3.

      Happy weekend!
