Laajasalo – the biggest island of Helsinki and Helsinki’s 49th district in eastern Helsinki

Part 1.

Visiting Laajasalo (Degerö in Swedish) is easy. Take metro which goes to Itäkeskus or Myllypuro. Hop off at Herttoniemi subway station. Walk out of subway station and take some of these buses: 84 – Gunillankallio, 85 – Jollas , 88 and 88B – Kaitalahti and Kruunuvuorenranta, 89 – Yliskylä. There are other bus routes, but I suggest to You these routes. You can hop off anytime or at final stop. Where You decide to hop off, start walking. As soon as possible, choose a path. Everywhere on the island, there are cycling and walking paths. Selecting path, they give to You an excellent way to explore the island. Getting lost – no, because every path lead to some road and on roads there is traffic. When returning all the busses are marked with sign Herttoniemi(M).

The nature varies from well-kept parks to rocks and small forests. The building style vary from apartment house to detached houses. There are also semidetached houses. The architecture varies depending in which decades they are built. Some houses have beautiful gardens. The best of Laajasalo is its nature. Depending where Your walking tour takes, You can imagine that You are in the jungle on some areas. We love taking our walking tours wandering along the seaside paths. The island is not big, because You walk from the farthest place in an hour and ten minutes to Herttoniemi metro station, but enough big to explore its beauty and variety.

In the middle of Laajasalo, there is a place called Yliskylä, bus 89, the quite new two-storied shopping center called Saari (island). It is nice place where You can enjoy in all peace your coffee with some yummy. I suggest!. It offers of course everything for residents. Coffee shops and restaurants are of high quality and they offer a nice place to sniff the atmosphere on the island. If You want walk from Saari shopping center to Herttoniemi, it takes about 20 minutes walk. Well, there is a huge park, which I recommend, on the way and it is worth for a visit. Everywhere on the island there are also rentable city bikes.

  How nice comment You left. Laajasalo is beautiful even in winter. In the second part I have photos. Very near to the metro station of Herttoniemi there is Marimekko outlet, which is popular among Japanese. We have guided hundreds of Japanese to Marimekko while waiting the bus (84 or 88) when shopping in Herttoniemi. If You do not know Marimekko, then here is the link in Japanese:

Beautiful photos Matti reminding me of the summer we rented an apartment by the sea at Herttionemi. We visited this island and my sons enjoyed cycling around there. I don’t recall the shopping centre so I assume it’s a recent addition. Thank you for sharing.

  Herttoniemi and my unknown Island has been changed its faces quickly in two years. The seaside where the tram will come from Hakaniemi within few years, is now “full” of new houses, if not full yet, but new houses rise like mushrooms after the rain! The shopping center is “brand” new. In next post I will show some inside / outside photos about it. There is wonderful café / cake shop which we love! The library has a good selection of different books. Two barber shops, health club open 24/7, restaurants and much more.

  Thank You having Your interest in Laajasalo. If You will visit it, I suggest that You will start Your visit by first visiting the shopping center and enjoying there a nice cup of coffee. There You can select different routes / paths. One beautiful are is going to the beach. You can find it passing the Laajasalo church. There are nice paths for walking.
  
  Walking back to Herttoniemi would be nice. I suggest You the right side of the road. The road passes nearby the beautiful park. Anyway, there are many possibilities You to explore the area. I will make second post also and much later the third one, in which I will show how to visit, well, I will tell it in my post.

    I didn’t know there was anything happening at Messukeskus. (It might have been going on when we were traveling.) Alpacas are some of my favorite animals. In the state of Maine, there is a fiber festival every summer where they have llama limbo competitions. It’s great fun.

  Thank You. It is true. In 2026, Laajasalo gets tram connection from Hakaniemi to Kruunuvuorenranta (Crown hill waterfront). The construction begins in 2020. Tram connection needs three bridges of which the longest bridge Kruunuvuorensilta (Crown hill bridge) is 1200 meters Finkensilta 300 meters long and Merihaansilta 400 meters long. Bridges are reserved for trams, cyclists and pedestrians.

  As You noticed in my post, I did not show bus route roads, but walking / biking paths. When You look at the photo number 41, then You see the oil tank and my wife. From the top, You can see see Helsinki on the other side as following photos show. There the tram will be connected to this island. Roads leading to the center of Laajasalo are nearly ready.

Hello Matti, thanks for introducing this special part of Helsinki! Laajasalo is such a versatile island as I learnt not only from your pictures but also from your written description. A lot of nature but actually it’s rather close to the metro and as a consequence also to other parts of the city. It must be nice to live in such a natural environment.
I just have noticed in a comment above that you mentioned bridges planned to be built between 2020-2026 in order to connect the island and to install a tram line. Probably this connection will make it still much for comfortable to reach or to leave Laajasalo – but hopefully it will not cause a kind of building boom to the disadvantage of the nature (wonderful forests).

The bridge is reserved only to trams, bikes and walker – no cars. Passing over the water, the bridge, gives a new point of view over Helsinki.

Lovely post, and wonderful to have our capital featured in text and photos! There are so many beautiful ilttle islands about, and the downtown area with old jugend houses and little coffee shops is great for summer strolling.

I decided to show Helsinki photos after my long tour in Mikkeli, Oulu, around in Finland and our northern areas. I have found that Finland is interesting and offers “hidden” gems for those who wants experiences. Thank You.
