Helsinki is a beautiful city. I really enjoyed seeing all the colorful sailboats out in the water, as well as the old sailing ships. I believe the name of one of them is ‘Astrid’.
Comment by seniorhiker — December 9, 2011 @ 17:04 |
Hello George.
The sailing ship Astrid is organizing sea cruise. I think that to take a sea cruise on a sailing ship like Astrid must be great. I am glad that You find Helsinki beautiful. Thank You commenting.
Happy week-end!

The buildings in Helsinki are all so attractive! That is really a pretty port area and so enjoyable to see all of the ships and boats! I’ve always admired icebreakers, but have never had the slightest desire to be on one while it was on a mission! I love the lines of the Pelorus! This is a very enjoyable series, Matti!

Hi Terry.
It was so nice to read Your comment. During the winter one has a possibility to take a cruise on an ice-breaker in a town of Kemi.
Happy week-end!
Comment by sartenada — December 10, 2011 @ 09:49 |
I love the shot of the twin-masted wooden sailing ship with the massive ice breaker behind it. What a contrast! Seeing all the summer sail boats in the harbor, it’s hard to imagine the ice build up that requires such massive vessels to keep the harbor clear. As usual, I’ve enjoyed my tour!

Hello Janet.
Thank You leaving Your comment. I am very glad that You found many interesting things. Many of those ice breakers are in use in the Northern part of Finland. Many times the thickness of the ice is not problem, but the pack ice, which is caused by heavy arctic winds. Then the real need for ice breakers is real in those Northernmost towns. Those ships transporting cargo on icy sea must be ice-strengthened ships.
Have a wonderful day!

So many beautiful pictures!! I sure would like to visit your country one of these days. I just read your “about me” section. You sure have had and continue to have an interesting life!!!
Comment by Neal — December 10, 2011 @ 15:23 |
Hi Neal.
Thank You. It was a great surprise that You read my About. I always read “other people’s” About, just to know the background info of the blogger. I checked Yours About and very interesting too.
What is “funny”. is that when I retired I have had time to enjoy life more and to do things that I love and which I had not time to do when in work.
Happy week-end!
Comment by sartenada — December 11, 2011 @ 09:39 |
Beautiful photos as usual. Love that in spite of many modern buildings, there are also many buildings that look much older and have beautiful architecture. Also love the colorful sails–looks like the ocean is bursting into bloom.
Comment by kateri — December 11, 2011 @ 05:39 |
Hello Kateri.
Helsinki is a “mixture” of old and new. Our history has passed under the Swedish and Russian domination, both of them have enriched our own culture causing a variety of effects, to the culture, architecture, etc. Thus combining these to our own views and visions, we have now own looking culture. Thank You for Your visit and comment.
Happy Sunday!

Have a lovely weekend Matti 🙂

Salut Isa.
Merci d’avoir faite le commentaire.
If You do not mind, so I explain more in English concerning that Double-headed eagle, that others understand it also.
It was erected on Helsinki’s Market Square, to the memory of the German-born Empress Alexandra’s, wife of Nikolai I of Russia (1796-1855), who made her first visit to Helsinki. Russian emperor and his wife visited Helsinki Finland in the summer of 1833. That was when Empress Alexandra’s visited to see how the new capital’s construction was looking.
The Great Fire of Turku was in 1827. That meant that Helsinki was selected finally to the new capital.
Finland was from about 1150 until to 1809 under the rule of Sweden and under Russia from 189 to 1917. At those days Finland was called: “Grand Duchy of Finland”. Since 1917 we are an Independent state.
Belle journée!
Comment by sartenada — December 12, 2011 @ 16:22 |
Oh I think I have seen the double headed eagle somewhere before…
Isn’t it a symbol of Russia?
Oh yes, you mentioned to me that Finland was once part of the Russian Empire, right.
I think that could be the reason.

Hi London Caller.
First thank You for Your visit and comment. If You read my answer in English to Isa (just above), then You’ll know better. My answer is very brief, but it explains anyway.
Happy Monday!

Another lovely Helsinki sea cruise! Are your ice-breakers in action now? We have some down here too, but they have not been in action for many years – not even in our two last cold, long winters….
Comment by truels — December 12, 2011 @ 01:56 |
Hello Truels.
I am glad that You left Your comment. What comes to those ice-breakers, I am not sure if they have some “work” just now, because the winter is “delayed” this year about one month. Normally during the winter we have in our radio announcement of the thickness of the sea.
Anyway here is: updated situation
Happy Monday!

Such a lovely series of photos again…I’m afraid I haven’t had time lately to post or catch up on others blogs much, (I’m working on publishing a children’s book I’ve written as well as working full time)!
