Reindeer race / Carrera de renos / Course de rennes / Competição de renas

In English:

Everyman’s Reindeer Race.

Where? In Oulu. Where in Oulu? At the market square. When? On first Saturday after mid-February. Intended for whom? Meant for everyone. Number of departures? Ten. Every departure consists of two reindeer sleight. In one sleigh, there can be one or two competitors. Can others than Finns participate in the competition? Yes. Length of run? 50 meters / 54.5 yards plus stopping area 10 meters / 11 yards. What is the official name? Reindeer carnival.

The race, which we visited, was hold on Saturday the 18th of February 2017. This was the second time when we visited this unique race in the world. We watched six departures of ten. The speaker interviewed every participants, which revealed that, participants came from Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italia, Czech Republic, Turkey, Sri Lanka (photo), South Korea and Finland.

All the reindeers were used to competitions and they were eager to run, sometimes maybe too eager. My second and third photos show a reindeer who took a false start and how it was prevented. Reindeers are fast and due to it, photographing is a challenge. For example few years ago the reindeer called Timon Tumma (Timo’s Dark) owned by Timo Vaarala run one kilometer in time 1.13.01. This means the velocity of 13.7 m/s = 49.3 km/h = 30.64mi/h! This world record is from the 2012. In Finland, there are reindeer cups for professionals during winter months.

After the finish line, there were three men assisting competitors to stop the race. Will I see You next year in Oulu?

¿Destinado a quién? Destinado para todos. ¿Cuántos de salidas hay? Diez.

  3. I assume this is a saner version of the very serious reindeer racing that goes on (I listened to a brilliant piece about that on British radio not long ago and was very impressed though as convinced as ever that Finns are pretty much insane).

    Comment by utesmile — March 1, 2017 @ 20:03 | Reply

    • Hello Ute.

Everyone can participate in this race – free, no payment. About 20 minutes before the first start, the speaker announces that those who want to participate, they can now register themselves. Every participant get the number, which is the same as the start order. Owners just bring reindeers to this happening. I asked from one owner from where reindeers were and one owner told to me that from Pudasjärvi, which is about 88 km / 55 mi from Oulu. Thank You commenting.

      Have a nice day!

I really like to see that these beautiful animal obviously like the competition. So eager for starting that even a false start may occur due to a certain impatience … 😉 I never expected them to run nearly 50 km/h! – I really enjoyed your photos, the special moments you caught with your camera, Matti.
In one of your answering comments I read that not only the owners were allowed to participate at the race but that everyone could register. Didn’t you feel the sudden and very urgent wish to try it yourself? ^^

    • Hello Michèle.

Thank You for Your praising comment. Well, I though indeed myself to try it when on the home way. I said to my wife, that, next year, I want to participate in the race. I am only wondering that she manages to shoot photos. Training will teach surely. There are only few things to remember. To put the power on, not too early, because when cold weather You cannot put it too early, zooming in and out and at the same time to push the trigger. All these sound easy, but everything happens so fast, that if You do not manage to do these things at same time quickly, the race is over and no photos. Anyway, I trust my wife because she is smart person.

Other bloggers are welcome and I promise to shoot photos from their race.

      Have a nice day. Matti.

P.S. This Morning we walked to the library of Oulu and I took my camera with me to shoot photos from white trees, but after few photos, my zoom lens froze. This meant stopping to shoot photos. Air temperature was only -20℃ / -4.0℉. When shooting reindeer race photos, I did not have any problems with my zoom lens, only the battery of my camera started to show that two bars left from five for photos and until then I have hold it one hour on my neck. The temperature was only -10℃ / 14℉.

What to learn about this? Good full loaded battery is must!

      Matti.

      Comment by Sartenada — March 7, 2017 @ 08:51 | Reply

      • Oh, I can imagine how difficult it is to catch the right moment, to care about the speed and best settings and to prepare all this necessary technical stuff in time but not too early … Phew! But I’m sure Anja will manage it very well. As you said, she is a very smart lady and some technical advice in advance from your side will prepare perfectly.
Matti, if – against all odds and despite all personal smartness – the camera should not deliver the perfect shoot or the battery/zoom lense should give up because of strong frost, you should better take into account to repeat the race. Several times. Just for presenting new opportunities to take photos, you know? 😀

        Comment by ladyfromhamburg — March 7, 2017 @ 17:29 | Reply

        • Hello Michèle.

Thank You. I appreciate Your comment very much. We will train, it is our decision! One person can participate only once in the race. I checked from Internet why zoom lens froze. Most probably it was by breathing air which caused it. Advices were that when shooting in cold, do not breathe while shooting photos. Another tip was that when shooting in cold, man must have mittens in hands. I have mittens and gloves (both), but when I start to shoot photo I remove my mittens, not gloves, from that hand which use shutter-release button and the other hand I have both of them; this hand uses zoom lens.

Camera is incredible cold in cold weather. Its weight is 840 g and lens weight is 745 g. Together the wight is 1585 g. When bringing it home, it takes about one hour to get it warm. Well, life is learning. Matti.

  27. The kind of event I watch! I probably won’t see you there next year, but these professional-istic images will suffice.

    • Hello Rommel.

Thank You for your kind words. We will be in Oulu next winter also, because in Helsinki snow is “rare” and when it is snowing, snow start to melt quite soon. In Oulu, snow is incredibly white and it stays white long time, meaning that pollution is very low.

      Happy weekend!
