In English::
Some of You might remember my post from last year (2012) when I visited on Arctic Circle in summer. Now it is time to present Arctic Circle in winter. How it is looking when there is cold and snow covers the landscape.
It was Wednesday 13 February 2013 in the morning when we left the town of Kemi where is World’s Biggest Snow Castle. The road from Kemi to Rovaniemi was icy and snowy because it has snowed a couple days ago which meant that the distance 117 km / 72 mi lasted about one hour and half. From Rovaniemi to the Arctic Circle the distance is 10 km / 6 mi so it took only few minutes.
This time we were not lucky with weather because no sun shine, but the snow was snow-white. Now You might ask in Your mind what we saw. Well, a lot of things, but most of all I loved to see reindeers.
En español::
En francais::

Hi Anna.
Thank You visiting Arctic Circle thru my photos. The place is visited in summer by many Italians also. Once, many years ago, there were parked “huge amount” of mobile homes from Italy. Some mobile homes continue generally to the North of Finland or to North Cape which You can see in my future post.
Have a lovely day!

Comment by Bondseye — April 19, 2013 @ 13:30 |
Hello Lisa.
Yes, Santa is there. He was working in his office and his working hours seemed to be short; because he had a 15 minutes lasting break in one hour. I am happy that You did like my post.

Your soft and snowy photos could have been taken in Alaska, right down to the reindeer! The trees look the same, and we have a very similar Santa Claus Shop in a town called North Pole, which is close to Fairbanks, in the interior. The buildings there are not as beautiful as yours, though I have not been there in many, many years, so I couldn’t say for sure what it looks like now. The second photo from the top equals what I see when I look at the woods that surround our house. Thanks!
Comment by Marilyn Albright — April 19, 2013 @ 16:48 |
Hi Marilyn.
Thank You for Your interesting comment. The fact is that Santa Claus we / You cannot “affiliate”; he is worldwide known phenomena. 🙂 The landscape in the second photos is very typical even here much further to the south. The most common species of trees in our forests are spruce, pine and birch.
Arctic Circle in Finland is the gateway to the North. For example the distance from Arctic Circle to Nuorgam which is the northernmost point of Finland and the northernmost point of the European Union is 486 kilometers / 301 miles.
Last Year I made a post from this village which was part of our road trip:
Nuorgam, finlande.
Have a great week-end!

Oh, Matti, this is going to be such a fun trip! I’ve never seen so much snow, or pictures taken so close to reindeer. Did your intrepid blue car have any trouble being so far north in winter?
Comment by Heart To Harp — April 20, 2013 @ 04:28 |
Hi Janet.
Thank You for Your kind comment and making a question. Well, my little blue car worked great. At this photo I have been driving 106000km / 65865mi. It was 7 years and one month old. This photo is the last “official” photo from it, because I sold it. Sigh! It was great car having these properties: Sprint time: 0-62 mph or 0-100 km/h took 6.3 seconds / Max speed (limited): 250 km/h or 155 mph / Horse powers: 280 HP/206 kW / Torque 355 Nm / Number of gears: six ( 6 ) / Trunk: 500 liters / Number of doors: five ( 5 ).
I bought a new car – BMW. Here are some specifications of it: BMW 535 touring Xdrive (4*4). Motor 3.0 liters. Power 313 hp / 230 kw, torque 630, Trunk: 590 liters. Sprint time: 0-62 mph or 0-100 km/h takes 5.5 seconds. It has 8 gears automatic and biturbo. Its consumption seems to be about 6.1 liters/100km. Opel had 8.1 liters/100km.
Happy week-end!
P.S. here are great photos presenting my Opel Vectra OPC around in Finland and Germany:
My Blue car

I will look forward to seeing your new car in your future photos. I hope it takes you to as many beautiful and interesting places as your blue Opel.
Comment by Heart To Harp — April 23, 2013 @ 04:33 |
Hi Janet.
Thank You. Surely it takes me to some nice places. I am sure that You’ll see photos in which it is before something interesting sight fulfilling the scenery. 🙂 Maybe next Autumn when we start our short holiday in Lapland. Before it You can see my wife’s Opel which color is burgundy from 1993. She has it yet now although it is ten years old and its meter odometer has 156000km / 96934mi. Still going strong!
So after a couple of weeks when presenting our road trip to Nordkapp in 2006.
Have a great day!
Comment by Sartenada — April 23, 2013 @ 08:03 |
Matti, your wife’s Opel is just a “spring chicken” as we say in the States. My 1998 Volvo wagon has 187,600 miles on the odometer, and thankfully is still going strong.
Comment by Heart To Harp — April 26, 2013 @ 04:43 |
Hi Janet.
It is great amount of miles indeed. My hat off. Old Volvos are / were cars! You have to remember that here the winters are hard / cold and it causes problems. Anyways cars are individual. Here we speak from cars which are made on Fridays or Mondays meaning that their quality is poor. Happily we have had cars which are not made on those days! 🙂
Happy Friday!

How fun! I would love to photograph a reindeer. 😉
Comment by ruthincolorado — April 23, 2013 @ 18:24 |
Hi Ruth.
At the Arctic Circle they are easy to photograph, but in the nature they are very shy. When driving car in the North man must be careful, because they are running suddenly across roads “without any warnings”. Thank You leaving Your kind comment.
Have lovely day!
Comment by Sartenada — April 24, 2013 @ 07:13 |
Wow its so white and beautiful! I can’t imagine walking through a place with all that snow. Are the reindeer as tame as they seem in your pictures?
Comment by dearrosie — April 23, 2013 @ 23:12 |
Hello Rosanne.
They are tame, but very shy. In the nature in Lapland man see them here and there, but they go to hide into the woods when seeing the human being. Normally they move in a flock and this means that if one reindeer is crossing the road, then there are coming more of them. So, when driving in the North man has to be careful and to observe both sides of the road actively. Thank You commenting and making a question.
Happy Wednesday!

Hi Truels.
Thank You. Yes, I never forget to mention it when I have opportunity. This winter my wife shot awesome videos from it. She is learning to shoot videos better and better. It was easy to me edit her shots; the only problem was what not to show, because material was more than enough. In this video You see me shooting photos which I’ll present in next December. If You someday visit Finland in winter, then Arctic Circle and Snow Castle “are must to visit”.
Have a great day!

Have a nice day.

The carvings in the snow castle are astounding. What an amazing place! Thank you for sharing it here.
Glad to hear that you have visited Canada. I hope another time you can head west and enjoy the Rocky Mountains in our backyard. 🙂
Comment by Sue Slaght — July 11, 2014 @ 14:20 |
Hello Sue.
I forgot to say that in 1992 we made the bus trip to Niagara Falls (Canadian side). Gorgeous trip! We still have a photo from us together by the Niagara in out book self. Rockies sound really great, maybe, maybe. We have hiked in Lapland (Northernmost part of Finland) few times. All the winter I presented our road trip (13 posts) North of the Arctic Circle. Someday if You have time, then check our road trip in Lapland; it gives excellent info about Lapland and about as. In the first part there are huge road Icons, maybe unique in the world for example. Do You hike? We make daily hikes only, not overnight.
Have a great coming weekend!
Comment by Sartenada — July 11, 2014 @ 14:35 |
Thanks for sharing. Yes we do hike and have done some overnight trips but mainly day trips. We have been to Niagara Falls as well. Really tremendous. Wishing you a great weekend as well.

Salut, Sartenada!
Ok?
Comment by Josenilton — July 17, 2014 @ 14:09 |
É a cidade pequena e bonita. Nossa casa é perto do lago chamado Saimaa, só a poucos metros dele. No inverno, andamos sobre o lago congelado. Muitas pessoas esquiar e fazem outras coisas.
Matti.

In Lapland reindeers roam freely here and there. If You read this answer and have time, then look at my post from last year when we made road trip in autumn:

I went to Lapland this January 2015. I didn’t know what to expect before the trip and hence was surprised by the array of activities we could do in winter. The scenery, the food, the husky safari, the reindeer ride, snow mobile safari, the self-drive in winter landscape are all marvellous. I hope I could have better captured the scenery with a better camera, liked yours. Finland, I will be back !

Comment by Sartenada — April 13, 2015 @ 12:13 |
Yes, it is a very different Winter Wonderland from the one we saw on the north coast of Norway, Matti. I think it is generally warmer there because the shores are warmed by the gulf stream, and of course this year there was very little snow. This is a different kind of beautiful.
Comment by Janice / Dancing with Sunflowers — April 21, 2015 @ 20:28 |
Hello Janice.
Thank You. The Gulf Streams warms whole Scandinavia!!! It is one of Basic thongs which is theaced in our school. In summer even our northernmost region is “warm”. On the contrary winds coming “direct” from the North Pole or better from the Arctic Ocean brings cold sometimes to the Southernmost part of Finland.
Have a nice day!

Hi Tanja.
Thank You. At the Arctic Circle, You could meet Santa Claus whether is winter or summer, except one day-on Christmas Eve. Then Santa is busy, because he distributes gifs for all children in the world.
In Finland Santa meets personally children, meaning that he visits every home, he talks, sings, plays and dance with kind children. This way every children has personal touch with Santa. Think, how happy they are when meeting Santa live at their home. This means memories for years.
Have a great day!

Comment by leannenz — February 21, 2016 @ 10:23 |
Hi Leanne.
This is winter. Summer in is “warm”. Best time for a visit in summer are June, July and August. To experience Midnight sun is awesome and in Lapland, Northernmost place in Finland it is possible. When we made road trip we had bad luck, because the temperature was only +9 centigrade, few days later about +25 centigrade and this happened in August.
Our Lapland is at its most beautiful in Autumn, the beginning of September, because the ground is reddish.

I am glad that You loved my post. Arctic Circle is one of my winter favorite places. I have visited there many times even Eleanor Roosevelt who visited there in 1950 has her own log cabin yet today there.
I do not know if it appropriate to give two links more. The small town called Kemi, not so far away from the Arctic Circle offers World’s Biggest Snow Castle. It is not only sow castle, because it offers possibility to spend a night inside, eat at ice restaurant, cold drinks in ice bar and possibility to marry in snow chapel. Many people have married there.

Hi Matti, a simple comment is not enough to give an idea of all this genuine and accurate work you have done. You have been really good … Great, wonderful photos .. landscapes .. places … seasons it is impossible for me to list everything … you have my admiration!
Your life has been full of emotions and satisfactions, you have been a protagonist of the same and you have interpreted it in the best way indeed you still live it fully today .. and with the right spirit. I have not looked at your entire blog but I plan to do it, … it is very interesting I think I will download some photos for my videos. I wish you all the best … Giorgio ————- P.S. I saw some of your comments at Burnsernst I just wanted to tell you that he plays Rautalanka because he copied from me, besides most (almost all) of the songs played are on my Backing Tracks. This said between us!

Thank you, Giovanni. It was surprise that Ernst got from you the ideas of Finnish Rautalanka! I give you with great pleasure free permission to copy my pics!!! I have offered to him some of my ideas from my favorite Finnish Rautalanka songs, but he has not been interested in. I understand this very well. Our world is full of beautiful music which goes directly to our hearts. Luciano Has accepted couple of my suggestions, Paratiisi, and Hiljainen kitara. I am glad that he fulfilled my wishes.
When I said in About-me-page that I love Cumbias, it is true, but then I did not know that Rautalanka has come back. It has been my favorite music all the time and yet today it is! I have also wished from Erekibito to present the song “A little snack”, which is nearly forgotten Japanese song. His version is lovely.
We live in Espoo since two years. We have good connection to Helsinki. The train trip lasts only 13 minutes to the central railway station. Many times, when we are walking by the railway, we see the train going fast to Kirkkonummi. Kirkkonummi is not known to us, but we will visit someday. I only know it from the music called on the “On the Kirkkonummi Railway track ”, in Finnish KIrkkonummen radalla.
Back to my blog. All my post can be found under “Select Category”. I have made a post presenting Model railway exhibition. This was held near to our home 2018. Those model trains are gorgeous. Link:
Buon fine settimana! Matti
