Aviation Museum of Central Finland / Museo de la Aviación de Finlandia Central / Musée de l’aviation de la Finlande Centrale / Museu da Aviação da Finlândia central

In English:

This museum is situated in Tikkakoski very near to the town called Jyväskylä. The distance to Tikkakoski from Helsinki is 278km / 173mi. and the distance between Jyväskylä and Tikkakoski is 21km / 13mi. The museum presents many “cold war” air crafts, crew equipment and engines.

My post shows 29 different aircrafts, but the most important photos to me personally are 16 photos presenting the only one and unique Brewster BW372 in the world. It is known better as Brewster F2A Buffalo. Finland bought from the United States 44 F2A-1s. With these fighters the Finnish war pilots gained 447 air victories for 19 losses. Ration to victories was 32:1 and that is much in the whole world.

This Brewster BW372 was shot down in June 25th, 1942. The pilot called Lauri Pekuri had to make an emergency landing in the lake Big Kolejärvi in Russia. In 1998 it was recovered from the lake badly damaged. After that it was transferred to Pensacola in August 18th, 2004 and the Finns promised to restore it to that condition when it was when lifted from the lake Big Kolejärvi. Now this unique fighter can be admired in Tikkakoski in the Aviation Museum of Central Finland.

It is on loan from the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Fl. According to the newest info, Brewster BW372 is returning to Pensacola sometime in 2018-2020. The last photo is SA-kuva from our war archives which everyone can use. Link to archive page:

      • Hi again! I checked out the link … Very interesting symbolism… It seems it is a universal symbol somehow… I knew that ancient romans had used iot, but not that it was common among so many different cultures..
As to Finland … I found online the following information: “From 1939 to 1945 three conflicts the Finns recognize as the Winter War (against an invading Soviet Union), the Continuation War (striking against the Soviets alongside the Germans) and the Lapland War (against the Germans for control of Lapland)…
Which means that Finland fight alongside the germans in one occasion and against them in other. [Source: The Atlantic. com]
Those were difficult times and even France and Italy (I have italian roots) were allies of the nazis…. Lots of mazis came to live to Argentina (my country) after they War was over… So… All was part of a Terrible war, hard to understand it.
All the best to you and thanks for providing new knowledge, dear sartenada!!! Aquileana 😀

        • Thank you having interest in our history!

          Memorials.

Everywhere in our country we have gorgeous memorials erected for war veterans.

This post includes small info about our history.

P.S. I forgot to say, that I was born during the war. Once a bomb exploded very near to our home in Helsinki and if my late mother being pregnant, when the anti-aircraft sirens howled a warning of bombers attack, would not gone to the nearest bomb shelter, I should never wrote these words and You never had hear about me!!!

I will definitely check out the link! Virtual hug from Argentina to Finland! Aquileana

    • somewhat interestingly enough, our local museum (many years ago) displayed a big stone carved wall — with a swastica which was a Zuni (i think) Indian symbol. (now they’ve got that object hidden away — ah, “political correctness”)

Now, Matti, I’m pleased that you took the chance on your road trip to stop at your aviation museum and to take photos of this particular plane – as sadly – as a loan- it will have to be returned to the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Fl. in 2016. Thanks for showing and telling the story of the Brewster and for your addional links!

    Happy Easter!

Thank You commenting. Well, there were planes from many countries, mainly from Finland, but You should read this:

      in Japanese.

Finnish Air Forces used Swastika from 1918, ours stands on one leg, to identify it easily.

  19. These airplanes are really works of art, so beautiful.I went to the museum of transportation in Glasgow, Scotland and although they didn’t have airplanes, your photos made me think of the museum as they had trains and cars, etc.

    • Hi Letizia.

Thank You. I love museums, because they tell nice stories how the development of industry has passed thru years. At Helsinki airport there is another aviation museum which has mainly civil air planes. It is “popular” among people has not time to visit Helsinki, but want to see something while staying at airport.

I wish a happy Sunday to You.

  22. They have certainly crammed a lot of planes into your local aviation museum, Matti. Great photos, and I read the history on the blog you linked to too. Great that you got to see it before it returns to Florida next year.
