In English:

Porvoo is charming historical small town about 50 kilometers / 31 miles to the East from Helsinki. It can be reached easily buses or in summer even by a boat. When approaching the town, one can see the medieval church and its bell tower which dominate the general view on its hill.

When visiting in the old town at river side, then one can admire its most famous sight: “Old red storage buildings”. Old town has colorful wooden houses and narrow alleyways. Even during winter, old town has a special charm and to stroll around without any haste, is a very pleasant experience.

This post presenting Porvoo is not the only one. When I was newbie, I presented it thru my photos which I took in autumn. Well, there are this time a lot of photos, but old Porvoo is worth of it, You’ll notice it.

  3. The muted colors of the sky and snow make the village look a bit old fashioned in a romatic kind of way. Such a beautiful town!

Thank You for Your visit and commenting my last post of this year. My own favorite photo is from the top number four. In my eyes is like old postcard.

      Happy New Year!

  4. WOW, that a stunningly beautiful town! The first photo and the narrow street scene directly below the first icicle photo look like they could be Storybook Illustrations, or details from miniature dolls houses. The little houses in the shop window below that are gorgeous too. There is a serious amount of snow here, are all the cars 4-wheel drives? or would they just have good snow tyres?
I think I HAVE to put this place on my travel wish-list.. it’s so beautiful I just keep going over the photo again and again and I keep seeing new things in the photos every time. For instance: there is a (Santa?) toy sitting in a chair in a mini house, there are tiny toy gifts boxed up right in the front of the photo, but what are the little circles with conical hat-like things on top of them? First I did a double-take because I thought that the Elves had been decapitated! BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL photos!

  5. Hi kiwidutch.

Thank You. No, all cars do not are 4X4 cars, but we have very good winter tires. These tires are not allowed in countries like Germany, I just wonder, but rules are rules. I am sure what You are meaning in Your question. To get the number of photo, then move mouse pointer over the photo and thus You get the photo number. Then I know what You mean and I try to answer.

I am glad that You liked my photos. This is beautiful town. I took also in fall photos from it with some from its small, but beautiful cathedral. Winter and fall photo are not similar, but they complete each others. My link is after photos.

    Happy New Year.

    • Cool! Thanks for the info on finding the photo number. It’s photo(55). We can get snow tires here but our apartment has no suitable storage for them and in the last decade it snows maybe two weeks of each year, so it’s hardly worth it. Last Christmas and this one are exceptions and snow had been both much heavier and long lasting.
Happy New Year to you and your wife too!

      Comment by kiwidutch — December 31, 2010 @ 16:48 | Reply

      • Hi kiwidutch.

Number 55 is a photograph of the flower stand, which is made from wicker and wire. Generally, willow is dried and then it is soaked later again and then from it can do almost anything. Wicker works are quite popular here. My wife made them some many years ago, before she found patchwork & quilting and then beading.

    Such a charming town!
I love those wooden houses, they’re so Scandinavian!
It’s true that most Finnish people have a sauna at their homes?
    Lucky you! 🙂

    Comment by London Caller — January 1, 2011 @ 02:42 | Reply

    • Hello London Caller.

Happy New Year. About Your question concerning Saunas. Well there are more than 3 millions Saunas in Finland and the number of population is about 5,3 millions. The number of Saunas is huge. I could talk about Saunas for long time, but I give some simple info here.

Mainly there are two kinds of Saunas: one which is warmed by electricity and other type which is warmed by wood. Ours is warmed by wood and it is the best Sauna in Finland! 🙂 Well, everyone is thinking in this way in Finland. LOL. I think that Saunas warmed by wood are better, because the humidity is better. The humidity is depending how the air condition is arranged. we have the air-conditioning which comes from the floor level and the output is in the ceiling. That air conditioning is natural, not made by a machine. The humidity is the most important thing, not how hot there is. Another thing is very important to the visitor of Sauna, is to drink enough when in Sauna and after it.

Saunas can be found in swimming halls, hotels, on every vacation cottages etc. Yet in Helsinki there are few general Saunas. Also in many townhomes in cities are equipped with Sauna nowadays.

Did we have yesterday Sauna? Yes. In my family we are taking Sauna baths every Saturday at afternoon starting about at “five o’clock tea time” :). How we are bathing in our Sauna? Well, first to the shower, then we stay some moment in the heat until we start to sweat. After that again shower and then we go outdoors to our terrace wrapped only into towels sitting for a while there. When we are cooled, then again to the heath, then thoroughly washing us and back to outdoors. Again when we are cooled enough we go to the heath for the third time and finally to shower. All this take about one hour and half.

Note that we are going to outdoors to cool us during the coldest weather during coldest winter wrapped only into towels. This means that we have very seldom a cough and sniffles. Someday I might to show some Sauna photos. I hope that my small explanation gave to You an idea how the Finnish people are bathing in Sauna.

  14. Oops Sorry Sartenada, It was Photo (58) Not 55 like I first thought. It’s like toy house in a shop window, and the things I’m asking about are on top of the tiny gifts at the front of the photo. Sorry for messing up the number of the photo! Happy 2011!

    Comment by kiwidutch — January 1, 2011 @ 16:56 | Reply

    • Hi kiwidutch.

It seems still difficult to me understand exactly Your question. In the photo there was indeed a toy house which was turning around all the time. Okay, what is the best that the photographer can be seen in this photo with his beanie bought from Lapland beyond the Polar Circle.

  18. Good morning, Matti
Of this winter series, I am again impressed. The whole place gives peace and harmony, including the colorful facades of the houses. The street lighting in Figure 14 provides a wonderful Christmas atmosphere. The boat in figure 19 is probably a long time to be frozen. In the images of 20/21 I was amazed at the long icicles. I think that the outside temperatures are not comparable to ours. In the images 23-26 I liked the goods offered for sale including the lighting performance of windows. In Figure 34, I wonder how someone driving a car, the road to the top. I think all-wheel drive is very useful. I practiced it many years ago and was happy that my car had a four-wheel drive. In Figure 41 I liked the church as a close-up. In Figure 52, I was surprised because of the thick icicles. What is below would interest me. It looks like a water flow under the roof. In Figure 64 I discovered the high wall of snow. I think this place is for thaw in danger of flooding. Every single photograph in this series is a delight for me and beautiful. I thank you for allowing me to watch this series and look forward to the next series. In our town, the snow melts in recent days. The streets and sidewalks are sometimes smooth and slushy. We wish you and Anja, all the best and health for the new year 2011 and to your common everyday ways.
Thank you for all your nice comments and your loyalty. I hope you got my e-mails.
    Dear greetings Christel and Detlev

  19. Hello Christel.

Thank You for Your visit and nice comment. I see that with big joy that You studied my photos with great care. The color tone of my photos is varying due to that because I came early, when it was dark, to this town and sometimes sun shined a little bit between the clouds. It was very cold and I was afraid my camera, but it lasted finally well when I visited in some shops to warm it.

All the best to this year 2011.

  21. Charming town that you surely can say….wow all the pictures you have to show us. I remember towns like this in my home country too. My favourite is Gstaad in Switzerland in the winter when it is all snowed in. Yes it is busy at times but if you live there all though the year it is very different when all the hustle and bustle of the resort has gone and one can enjoy the mountain and country. Just like you showed us in all the nice pictures too. I would love to own a knitting / craft store in a small town like Porvoo, so sweet and charming. Happy New Year to you too.

    A bientôt.

  27. Happy New Year! I love this little town, especially in the snow. Do you know what the population is and do most people work in Helsinki? I like the streets with the little shops and the model houses in the window of picture 24. You have really given the viewer a feel for this town and a look into every corner. We have no snow here in Eastern Canada!!! So you photos are so exciting. Thank you.

    • Hi Jackie.

      Thank you.

The number of population is 48820 residents. How many are working in Helsinki I do not know, but the amount must be great. There is a highway between Porvoo and Helsinki and three ring roads to pass in different districts on the Helsinki area.

I just today listened to that radio station (CBC Radio One) in Internet at background which link I told to once and they said that today will be rain showers in Novaja Scotia if I remember correct. It is interesting to me, because I can compare the temperatures between Finland and Nova Scotia.

      That is the link:

  28. The building construction reminds me a lot of Kiruna in Sweden. Will post those shots for you tomorrow :). Great icicle shots. I always feel compelled to take a picture when I see them as well.

  29. Hi incompletehistory.

Thank You. Well, I’ll see tomorrow Your photos from Kiruna. Kiruna is really in the North, but Porvoo on Southern coast of Finland. This year all was upside-down. In the North less snow than here in the South were I am living. In Helsinki the snow amount was 55 cm, but now all the streets are cleared from snow.

    • Oi Margarida.

    • Hello Nanette.

Oh, how nice to read that You did find my old post showing this beautiful town near to Helsinki. Thank You. To me, it is sad to read that people visiting Helsinki, they do not visit at same time Porvoo, which is only one hour by car from Helsinki.

Sometimes, there are active visitors, who take a plane Rovaniemi / Arctic Circle to get unforgettable experiences.

      Happy new week.
