Why Savonlinna (27 660 inhabitants)? The only and one excellent reason is, that it is famous for its castle of Olavinlinna. How is this small town looking like? Another point of interest is its small port from which many old lake ships make cruises around nearby lakes and longer trips to other towns. Those cruises last from one hour upto two days. Many of those old steam ships are old. For example the steam ship Punkaharju (photos 6 -9) is built in 1905.
Savonlinna has also small market with variety of sales. I think that some peculiarities are things made from birch gnarls / burls which are in silver birches. Good gnarls are not so easy to find in our forests, but in the hand of wood artist he can make interesting things.

Savonlinna a aussi petit marché avec une variété de ventes. Je pense que certaines particularités sont les choses faites de broussins de bouleau. Bonnes broussins ne sont pas si faciles à trouver dans nos forêts, mais dans la main de l’artiste du bois, il peut faire des choses intéressantes.

Je me réjouis de ton commentaire. Je te remercie. Savonlinna est une ville parmi les villes que j’aime en Finlande. D’autres exemples pourrait être Porvoo, Rauma, Naantali et Hanko et Pispala à Tampere.
Vraiment tu as raison de parler du contraste entre l’été et l’hiver.

Encore une belle trouvaille! Ces bateaux sont splendides avec leur recouvrement en bois. L’art est toujours au rendez-vous, la sculpture sur bois semble être maîtrisée avec brio. J’ai eu un sursaut en voyant tes photos d’hiver qui contrastent avec tes images d’été. Un beau partage.

Thank You. Those wood carvings are made from material found in the nature from our trees. Mainly they are old tree Gnarls, mainly from birch. I think that In Your country one can find Gnarls also, it might have another name Burl. Here they are very popular among those people who are able to treat them and make some “artistic” things.

Sooo… Is the castle open to the public? And the armored knight? Does he represent someone in particular?
Your world is so alive with a population that loves the water! The same is true for here, especially, where we’re surrounded by water. What’s the fascination?
I’m thinking that, when it’s cold, everything ices over; and it’s freezing cold weather there. Brrr. Y’all must be quite the rugged pioneers to tolerate such changes in temperatures.
So, while the photos sans ice are beautiful, the idea of a snow-white environment in the wintertime gives me the chills.

Castle is open for public nearly year-round. Cold, hmm, it is a matter of dressing, believe me!!! Hot cocoa or hot tea, well that is good start, but we have our own Vodka too (Finlandia Vodka); maybe it could to heat. 🙂 Okay I was joking. The record of our heat was measured in 2010. It was + 37.2 ºC / 98.96 ºF. Isn’t it nearly warm?

I love the small boats all lined up on the shore.. the colours are fabulous! the big boats are beautiful too, the elegance of a bygone age. beautiful quilts again in the market, but I think that some of those wood carved faces would definitely scare my kids!

Those small boats lined up on the shore serve the citizens of Savonlinna. They go with them to their summer houses / cottages. To have a summer house on some small island is very general in those towns which have lakes. Yes, they might scare some small children indeed.

Savonlinna is a delightful town. I especially like the waterfront and all those boats that make cruises from there. The boat that is over 100 years old is in remarkably wonderful condition. The talent of the wood carvers is unbelievable. Thanks for sharing this wonderful place with us. I like the fact that you included winter pictures as well.

I am very glad that we have kept these old steam ships in good condition. In the town of Savonlinna there is a small, very active dock where many historic ships are maintained and others of course.

I love those old ships. I could certainly enjoy cruising the lakes in one, but probably most in the natural wood-finished one in #40!

Savolinna is a very nice place. The port is very interesting for tourists. On these ships, I would also like to make a harbor cruise. The old ship Punkaharju looks very well preserved. It’s hard to believe that the ship is built in 1905th In the images 23 to 25, I like the view of the harbor, the island and the beach. Also interesting is the market, including the stalls with different offers. The quilts and wood carvings please me very well. In Figures 13 and 30 I like the wooden heads. They seem original. The photo series from the castle Olavinlinna I looked at it. It is an admirable castle and well worth a look. The red restaurant flamed salmon, in Figure 41 is very welcoming. Tourists can not miss it. At the Christmas market in Cologne is offered flamed salmon. It tastes delicious. I never get enough of it. The images 45 to 47 are a dream. The snow gives a special charm to this place. Especially nice is Figure 47. The glistening snow is beautifully expressed in this photo. A nice end for this series. I am grateful for the fact that I share in this series again and could look forward to the next. It follows a short e-mail with a surprise for you.
