It took four hours when I drove in my car on February 23 rd, 2011 to Savonlinna. Savonlinna is nice “summer town” and it is famous for its medieval castle called Olavinlinna from 1475. My purpose was to take photos from ice art in Olavinlinna (St. Olaf’s Castle).

Ice art and medieval castle sound together excellent. The day was quite cold, but sunny with -19 ºC / 2.2 ºF. When inside, I noticed soon, that there were not many finished works of ice art and I saw that on the big courtyard of the castle artistes were in work. At that moment I felt disappointed. Okay, I went to the café of castle and enjoyed a nice hot cup of coffee. There I heard when somebody told to his fellow, that after one hour Miss Finland 2011 candidates will start ice carving contest. Wow, that sounded cool.

The contest was arranged so that in 45 minutes Miss Finland every candidate assisted a professional ice carver. Quite soon I found my favorite Miss and her professional carver with a very special hat. It was just they from which I took lot of photos.

Se necesitaron cuatro horas cuando me dirigí a mi carro el 23 de febrero de 2011 a Savonlinna. Savonlinna es “ciudad de verano” agradable y es famosa por su castillo medieval de Olavinlinna de 1475. Mi intención era sacar fotos del arte de hielo en Olavinlinna (Castillo de San Olaf).

El arte de hielo y el castollo medieval me parecían muy excelente. El día era casi frío, pero soleado, con la temperature de-19 º C / 2,2 º F. Al estar dentro del castillo me di cuenta muy pronto, que no fueron muchas obras de arte de hielo terminado y vi que en el gran patio del castillo fueron que los artistas estaban en el trabajo. En este momento me sentí decepcionado. Bueno, fui a la cafetería del castillo a disfrutar de una buena taza de café caliente. Pronto escuché cuando alguien dijo que a su compañero, que después de una hora Las candidatas a Miss Finlandia 2011 se iniciarán un concurso tallando hielo. ¡Caray!, esto sonaba tan bieno.

El concurso fue organizado de manera que en 45 minutos cada candidato de Miss Finlandia asistió a un talla de concurso de hielo profesional. Muy pronto me encontré mi favorita Miss y su tallador profesional con un sombrero muy especial. Fueron ellos de los cuales sacé muchas fotos.

Mis fotos se van de esta manera: el exterior del Castillo, arte de hielo terminó, cómo tallar en el gran patio, las candidatas a Miss Finlandia 2011, suyo arte de hielo y, finalmente algunas fotos en la noche del iluminada Castillo de Olavinlinna.

Il m’a fallu quatre heures quand j’ai conduit ma voiture le Février 23, 2011 à Savonlinna. Savonlinna est une belle “ville d’été”et elle est célèbre pour son château médiéval appelé Olavinlinna de l’année 1475. Mon but était de prendre des photos de l’art de la glace dans Olavinlinna (forteresse d’Olaf).

Art de glace et château médiéval sonnent ensemble si bien. La journée était très froide, mais ensoleillée avec avec la température de -19 ° C / 2,2 º F. A l’intérieur, j’ai remarqué très bientôt qu’il n’y avait pas beaucoup des œuvres d’art de la glace finis et j’ai vu que sur la grande cour du château les artistes travaillaient. A ce moment, je me suis senti déçu. Et bien, je suis allé au café du château et jouit d’une bonne tasse de café chaud. Là, j’ai entendu quand quelqu’un dit à son compagnon, que après une heure les candidats Miss Finlande 2011 vont commencer un concours de sculpture sur glace. Sansass, ça sonnait bien.

Le concours a été organisé de sorte que dans 45 minutes chaque candidat de Miss Finlande par l’aidé d’un sculpteur sur glace professionnel. Assez vite, j’ai trouvé ma Miss préféré et de son sculpteur professionnel avec un chapeau très spécial. Ce sont lesquelles j’ai pris beaucoup de photos.

Mes photos vont de cette façon: l’extérieur du château, l’art fini de la glace, comment les faire sur la grande cour, candidats Miss Finlande 2011, leur art de la glace et enfin quelques photos du château éclairé de Olavinlinna dans la nuit.

Good Friday morning to you!
I wanted to go to Savonlinna too that day, but I did not manage, so, it`s nice to see happenings there through your wonderful photos, many thanks !
Do you know those pages of Shutterfly? I found them and I am now collecting my old photos there. I created two sites, one private for our family photos, one public for my nature photos. I have just started to collect there my photos from PC, but I like an easier way to make albums and so on. A spring cleaning perhaps 🙂

  Oh dear, if we both were in the same place at same time! There were a lot of photographers, mainly from newspapers and then more amateur photographers as I. Although the weather was cold, the good thing was that there was nearly no wind inside the walls.
  
  I have not heard about Shutterfly. Many times I have been thinking to start to digitalize my old photos, but never started to do so. It requires time and time, but maybe someday.

Brrrr that’s a *very* cold day indeed! I see that everyone was wrapped up in many layers and having fun in spite of the cold. I went to an ice sculpture exhibition several years ago but in was indoors and temps were kept artificially low inside, it was *very* cold.
The castle is BIG !.. and beautiful too, so a stunning place to hold this competition. Clearly the contestants chose their own subject and had professionals help them achieve the transformation from paper to ice. I don’t doubt that it is far harder than it looks (as is anything of a craftsmanship nature) and of course some do better than others, but all have shown hard work and given it their best. Well done to them all!!!

  Thank You for Your visit and comment. Olavinlinna castle is big and the most beautiful castle in Finland. During summer times, there are held Opera Festivals in this big courtyard every year. The castle provides a beautiful setting for Operas. Ice art needs also water, because in some cases ice block must be “glued” together to each others. Those pros were skillful really. They had visions, plans and right tools to carve ice.

A beautiful set of photographs, but I must say I’m disappointed! When you said that contestants of Miss Finland would be taking part I thought they’d all be dressed in their bathing costumes! —–Only kidding!! They still all looked very good wrapped up in their black and pink outfits. Some of them seemed to be able to help out with the sculptures as well as looking pretty. What a great place for this exhibition and another nice day’s outing for you.

  Oh I see very well that You are disappointed when they were not in swimsuit :). This was the first time when I saw Misses or Miss candidates in real life. Some of them really assisted ice carving and some not so much. When seeing ice carving at so close range, I understood that one must be very careful, because carving too much, then how to repair broken part.
  
  Anyway it was very interesting day to me and a great experience to be photographing Miss candidates like those many professional photographers which were there.

I enjoyed seeing the ice carvers at work. They certainly are very talented and I like their finished products. The castle is beautiful, especially when lighted at night. The Miss Finland contestants are also very beautiful.

  Thank You for Your comment. I think that ice is art as like any other arts. It is quite similar to sand art. Many of them are beautiful, gorgeous and them some day they do not exist more; only in photos. The moment I took my photos from lighted castle is so called “blue moment” which is between day and night. I was just at right place at right time. After few minutes it came so dark that details of the castle was not visible.

Hahaha that sure is strange headgear (an Elk-head of sorts). You shot som very nice portraits there , although I do wonder who’s brainchild it was to combine ice-sculpting with Miss Finland 😀 , anyways the combination worked very well photographically.

Also, that is a very nice castle!

  I liked that hat very much and my opinion is that the carver who was using it has very hard self-esteem and he is enjoying humor. Miss Finland candidates celebrates its 50 year anniversary presented in our TV. Those candidates have a very hard tour around in Finland during three weeks and to make ice art was great idea from my mind. Today on Saturday March 5 th, 2011 in the evening there is the final contest.
  
  When seeing official photos from those candidates, it is interesting to see, that I have difficulties to recognize those candidates because they are so “titivated” in official photos. When seeing my photos from ice carving contest, they are quite near to a natural look. Who would not be in such a cold?

That castle is astoundingly beautiful and a wonderful setting for the competition! With all of those very pretty assistants around, I would have wanted to carve some ice too! You dod an excellent job with the portrait photos! Very nice work! (And very pretty subjects!)

  Those ice blocks were brought from a lake in which its water is very pure.

My daughter would love to see the castle. She has read about them and has such a longing to see one. The sculptures are fantastic, but mostly I enjoy your image of the dark hair girl with the blue eyes looking up smiling. Of course she is beautiful, but your image caught something really special about her.

Very impressive castle indeed!
St Olaf? Isn’t that a saint from Norway?
I have been to church in London called St Olaf and I saw a Norwegian flag in that church.

Anyway, I think that’s such a great place to have the ice sculptures.
You always make me want to visit Suomi.

  St Olaf is a Norwegian name indeed. In Finnish it is Pyhä (Saint) Olavi (Olaf). Being a bilingual country we are very aware Swedish and Norwegian names.
  
  You are welcome and there are some interesting places to be explored. But how to know and find where to make visits is another question.

I love your Blue Moment photos, Sartenada! They are lovely, as a backdrop to the heavy stone of the castle! Very nice! And very Blue!
