In English:

It was at 3 O’clock in the morning when our alarm clock ringed in February 12th. Some coffee, final packing and then we were ready for our adventure. At 4 O’clock our car headed to the town of Kemi which is situated in the Northern part of Finland. In Kemi there is built every winter world’s biggest snow castle.

The distance the town where we live is only 537 km / 331 mi. Kemi sounds easy to reach, but it was night, cold and it snowed which meant slippery roads. It was 1 O’clock PM, when we finally were in Kemi and checked into our hotel Merihotelli. Our hotel arranged also tickets to snow castle to us and we could go finally go to eat.

Weather was sunny and not so cold. Every year the Snow Castle must be rebuilt. Actually the Snow Castle is not a castle, but much more. There is ice bar, restaurants, cabinets, chapel and snow hotel. Just outside the Snow Castle there is of course Cafe and the Souvenir-shop. To children it is offering a tube sleigh in addition to all what there is to be seen inside. The theme of 2013 was fantasy.

A distância a cidade onde nós vivemos é somente 537 quilômetros /331 milhas.

Gracias pidiendolo.

Feliz fin de semana. ¡Un saludo grande¡ Abrazos.

Thanks for this wonderful tour at Xmas time! We had “winter weather” here in Florida too this morning, 12 C when we woke up 🙂 Hyvaa viikonloppua!

I am happy that You checked the video also. Photos and video complete each others. Thank You. Well, sometimes You should visit there and at the Arctic Circle also. 12 Celsius is not much indeed there. Because my next post will published on Friday just after Xmas, I give to You show to You my posts (2) presenting old Finnish Christmas postcards: Old traditional Finnish Christmas postcards.

      Hyvää viikonloppua myös!

  11. I have heard of this snow castle, but I have never seen so many wonderful pictures of the interior. It’s hard for me to imagine all the work that went into making this wonderland. The ice sculptures are beautiful. I can’t help but wonder at how long it takes to build this fantastic structure each year.

Thank You. To build it requires a lot of work, “sweat” and planning. The town of Kemi is ideal to build it. I am glad that You loved my photos

    • Hello Micol.

How nice to read that You checked my wife’s video also. Photos and video complete each other nicely. Personally I am proud of my wife’s skill to shoot videos. The theme of 2014 is the secrets of the sea. Sounds great, because it gives free hands to use imagination. How many people is needed to build it, I have no answers. Some detailed info can be found on its official page. Check FAQ-page

  17. Amazing! Exquisite artistry in this huge structure. I enjoyed looking at all the features, both in the photos and video. Both were well done – makes it worth while to get up at such an ungodly hour..Can you stay in the castle or do you stay in the wood buildings surrounding it?In the room where there were drinks and snacks, was it warm enough to sit down? I am curious what Anna was lighting candles for. I enjoyed looking at the details.great post, both of you.

    Comment by janechese — December 13, 2013 @ 23:24 | Reply

    • Hi Janechese.

Thank You for Your comment and questions. To start to Your questions, I give here:

      Snow castle (official pages).

Many of Your questions have answers in FAQ. Man can stay overnight in special rooms inside the castle. Every year overnights vary between 1000-1400 form 40 countries. Those wooden buildings serve for personnel, café, snacks, storage of cloths, toilets etc. As You saw in some photos on benches and stairs there are reindeer skins. They are warm to sit. What comes to Anja’s lightning candle, it is a habit in Finland when visiting chapels / churches. Man can then remember for example own dead relatives. In snow restaurant man can eat and drink normally as in any other restaurant. In chapel some people get married. In some of my older post I told the story of a couple who married there and then flew to Caribbean to spend honey moon. Exotic!

      Happy weekend!

Sounds in my wife’s video are just as natural as it wasinside. In many cases when You see me shooting photos, You can hear clicking of my camera. No disturbing noises. I hope that You enjoyed the video, because in it there are some scenes which I could not capture with my camera.

Thank You. There every time when I have visited there been people from Japan. If You see for example my post from Snow Castle 2012 , You see a very nice young couple from Japan in the photo number 15 and also in photo 26. I gave to this couple the address of my blog, but they never contacted me. Sigh.

If You might plan to visit the Snow Castle, then know that flight duration 10 hours 20 mins between Tyo and Hel. The flight is nonstop and departures are daily. Also Finnair flies from Nagoya daily as also from Osaka daily. From Helsinki to Kemi there are flight and trains. When in Kemi You should visit also Arctic Circle in winter. This is must! Ask me if any questions.

        Comment by Lynne Ayers — December 21, 2013 @ 16:25 | Reply

        • Hi Lynne.

It is okay. The generally “unknown” fact, maybe in Finland also, that Finland, Sweden, Norway, Brittany, Ireland and France are warmed by the Gulf Stream. From Wikipedia: “The Gulf Stream influences the climate of the east coast of North America from Florida to Newfoundland, and the west coast of Europe”. Without its warmth our country would cold in summer.

In summer 2013 the highest temperature was 30.5ºC / 86.9ºF. in 1981 in Utsjoki (small village) and in winter-38.4ºC / -37.1ºF. The variety is great.

How does Utsjoki seem like? My post from 2012:

          Utsjoki.

Is it in the North? Yes. Coordinates are: 69°54′25″N, 27°01′25″E.

Thank You again having interest to my post.

    • Olá José.

Obrigado pelo seu comentário. O lugar é realmente fantástico e único no mundo.

O Círculo Polar Ártico no inverno.

      Até já!

  64. Beautiful castle! Oh my, it is very impressive but it must be very cold inside the castle 😀

    Comment by Indah Susanti — November 20, 2014 @ 13:00 | Reply

    • Hi Indah.

Thank you for Your comment. There is no cold inside! The temperature is about -2ºC or -5ºC. It is not depending about the outside temperature! My next trip is planned in next February; then it is the best time for a visit.

      Have a great day!

  66. There is something just magical about snow castles….Wow, they really went out of their way and let their imaginations run free!

    Absolutely stunning.

I guess you really have to be bold in order to stay out in the cold but in the end it is very worthwhile!

    Great winter memories 🙂

    • Hello Traveller soul.

I always admire those artists which create ice art I’ll visit the castle next February, which I find the best month for the visit. In Finland we say about cold this way: “Cold is only matter of clothing”. Thank You commenting so nicely.

      Have a wonderful day!

  70. Me voilà enfin !

Matti
