  1. Hello Matti,
I hope you and your family are well.
I love all images of the amazing winter – big blue sky and white snow everywhere. It’s charming to see the “fisherman” on the ice, and snow sculptures are incredible. Thank you for sharing the beautiful journey!

I remember they used to have ice sculptures before spring in Kokkola city center too. It’s amazing that you have this park inside a big city.. Big by Finnish standards at least 🙂

Santa Claus Village at the Arctic Circle

      Here are races:

I have seen bigger, but very seldom. This year’s reindeer race there was one, but curiously it was not so fast than smaller ones. Reindeers are also very individual. Some love that people touch and pat them. In my next post You will see more reindeers. Thank You commenting.

To have a reindeer ride, then You have to travel to the Arctic Circle. There they arrange reindeer rides in winter. The place is must-visit-place. Here is one of my many posts there:

Santa Claus Village at the Arctic Circle

Best time for the visit starts from the end of January and ends in the beginning of April. We visit there normally sometimes in the middle of February. Thank You commenting.

    • Hello Sue.

Thank You leaving Your kind comment. Winter in both countries offers similarities, I think. Reindeers are cute animals, we love them. My next three posts will show more of reindeers.

      Happy upcoming weekend!

  32. The reindeer look a bit sad to me, but the kids are all happy 🙂 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

    • Hello Johanna.

Sad, well, maybe too much work and missing holidays. 🙂 In fact, they changed reindeers every few days, we saw it. Thank You for Your kind comment.

      Have a wonderful day!

  33. The snow scenery is absolutely beautiful – particularly in combination with sunshine and blue sky! It looks like the children are having lots of fun – and their parents as well! The carving at Nallikari winter village is a highlight, too.
But I also enjoyed the Oulu photos very much, Matti! I always extremely admire those people who are able to sit down on a small folding stool on the ice of the lake (or sea) – and staying there sometimes for hours! – in order to catch a fish. Do they wear special winter boots? Otherwise their feet must be frozen afterwards. ^^ By the way, it’s the first time that I could see the large drill they use to get a hole in the ice. Stunning!

    Thanks for showing!
    Have a nice weekend!

    • Hello Michèle.

Thank You for Your praising comment. I answer to Your question concerning boots. I do not know, if they are special, but made in Finland. For example, our boots are warm, so warm, that in the cold of -20 Celsius, we can use summer socks, but for the comfort we use winter socks which Anja weaved. When walking with boots, our feet are warm even in the temperature of -33 Celsius. This is the lowest temperature in which we have been walking with them.

Out boots we bought from Mikkeli, when we lived there. Anja bought first and told that they are warm and comfortable, So I bought also them. They are made in a factory very near to Mikkeli. Brand name is Kuoma.

I give English links to their pages:

      BTW, they are not slippery.

Happy weekend to You and Yours,
      Matti

P.S. Anja just told that Russians visiting Finland / Mikkeli, they buy them like mad!

What a beautiful winter wonderland, between the caribou, children in tubes, snow sculptures, sled rides, beautiful white snow, clear blue skies and more. 💕

  39. Wow! What an amazing place! We have a winter festival in norther Michigan, USA, that has snow sculptures sort of like this, but we don’t have reindeer or the snow tubing that you show here.

  41. Hola !!!

      Matti

    • Hello The Snow Melts Somewhere.

Thank You leaving Your kind comment. Nice sunny winter day in Oulu- enjoyable. Oulu offers unique winter experiences which are not elsewhere. One of them is Reindeer race, which is once in the life time experience. This year I participated in it and I can say that it was more awesome than driving fast, my record 242km/h, on German “Autpbahnen”. It is very nice to notice that abroad people are aware about it more and more. My newest post, which shows last year’s race, is the third one and I was glad that for example some participants came from Mexico.

      Reindeer race 3

      Happy Sunday!

        • Hello.

How nice to read it! Thank You. Oulu has developed very much in recent years. We had a small vacation apartment in the Alppila area. If You have not visited there for 10 years, then Alppila must be unknown to You,

  47. Some years ago I played gigs in Oulu in February and, man, was it cold! Looked a lot like this but I did not see any reindeer there.

    Another great page.

    • Hello Fergy.

Oh, you have visited to Oulu. Very nice. Well, reindeers are generally on the first weekend after mid-February. Most unique happening is reindeer race, which is free for everybody. Here is my post from last winter:

Reindeer race 3 I participated in it this year and my post will be next winter.

      Have a nice day!
