It offers a spectacular view over Tampere and its surroundings. Pyynikki ridge is the world’s highest gravel ridge, which rises 162 meters / 532 feet above sea level and 85 meters / 279 feet from the surface of lake Pyhäjärvi. On its café there were some nice felted puppets.

In addition of many walking tours around in the city, we visited in its adventure park called Särkänniemi. This summer the new Angry Birds Land was opened. Angry Birds is Finnish invented a strategy puzzle video game for mobile phones. On the same area we visited also the observation tower called Näsinneula having the height of 168 meters / 551 feet. 1. I hadn’t thought I’d seen you around here for a while! 🙂 I don’t do theme parks (I get motion sickness), but I too like to photograph them! The pictures above them look like a place I’d love to visit too!

  2. Hi Carol.

I am very glad about Your comment. We also visit them occasionally, but just to refresh memories of our minds and of course for photos. Yes, I was off four weeks due to busy time. I took a great amount of photos which can be seen later this year and a lot of in the beginning of next year.

    Happy Friday!

  3. Excellent! Thank you. We have been to Helsinki twice. I wondered if it would be a good idea to visit another town next time – maybe Tempere. Now you have shown me a brilliant “Travalogue” better than the Finnish Tourist Service.
Ah! But will I find “Kantele” there?
    Thank you again,

    • Hi Clive and Adi.

Tampere is nice town which requires more time for visit than we made. Two nights are not enough.

Better town for Your visit would be

      Turku

It is full of history, nice museums and its long river passing thru the town. Easy to reach again by train.

      Thank You for Your comment.

      Happy week-end!

    • Hi Deb.

Thank You and I hope that Your summer has been great also as mine has been. While my wife was on a beading course, I made a photographic tour in Finland and during four and half days I drove 2024 km / 1258 miles. The amount of photos was 1228. From that amount I’ll select 400 – 500 photos to be presented starting in the beginning of next year. It is a long lasting series of photos presenting something unique inside of our churches.

We also made four days tour to the roots of my wife. I took photos and my wife took videos.

      Have a lovely day!

Thank You for Your comment. I am very happy that You did like my photos. Although I am not playing Angry Birds with my smart phone, it was interesting to see how people “invented” Angry Birds land on an amusement park.

  10. Hi Matti, I like the colourful architecture here in Tampere. The sunset with yellow sky is beautiful.I too liked the felt people. The rides at the amusement park-scary! That one with the round disk on the roller coaster looks like it goes along the track and spins at the same time. Like the shots of the people’s feet on the ride-nice capture!

    • Hello Janechese.

You are right what comes to that huge round disk. At first sight it looked like “old time” UFO. I also love that photo from people’s feet and that’s why I presented it here. Thank You for Your comment.

Your shots of the roller coasters captured the thrills of riding them, and the patterns of their tracks made for very interesting photos. 12. I like the way you started out this series with a beautiful sunset. Then you presented the city very well! I am always fascinated at the mixture of very old structures and very new: that makes it very thought provoking. Finland has a wonderful combination of history and the more modern world too.

    • Bonjour Marion.

Je suis très heureux de ton commentaire. Merci beaucoup.

Bises.

      • I just heard something I find unbelievable. Is it true you pay 75 percent of your earnings in taxis?

        Comment by kareninhonolulu — August 7, 2012 @ 02:27 | Reply

        • Hi Karen.

Taxes and how to calculate them is a very complicated thing. Here is one calculation from Finnish Wikipedia (a sentence translated by Google):

“In Finland, the most significant in terms of Euros collected in taxes is the income tax (about 40% of the annual tax revenue). Another major source of tax is consumption taxes (about 30% of the annual tax revenue)”.

Well, to understand taxes there is one simple way: 1. the amount of the state’s income. 2. The number of population and to divide them. Then there is a but. When calculating this way it includes also companies, capitals, dividends, self-employed persons, estates etc.

The person with average income pays from his earnings 30.8 %. The amount varies maybe from 16% to 45% depending from income. Totally different thing is then how to define a person average with average income. Who can say that it is this or it is that. Maybe the statisticians or maybe tax authorities?

As I said in the beginning to calculate taxes is very complicated thing. In Finland there are some things which are taxed highly: Cars / fuel price, Food, clothes and Housing.

One thing which I was about to forget is what people get from their tax moneys.

We have available a very good common health care system to all citizens of our country. It is competitive with the private system which is expensive. Also we get with our paid tax money cheap education system. Here is the link in English to the Education in Finland. Read this also. I am not sure it You have the equilent system, but here it is “awesome” Kela.

Also quite cheap are insurances and lawyers. So high taxes against what we get is relative.

I hope that my answer gave you some kind of answer, but please do not ask from taxes more questions, because I am not a specialist, just an ordinary senior citizen who was to forced retire at the age of 60 in 2004 from air line business. I was not alone, because 999 other persons were also forced to leave their job!

          P. S. I do not take no responsibility from the numbers I gave here!

  18. Thanks for the wonderful tour of Tampere and the gorgeous photos. I love those dolls – are they hand puppets? – on the window sills!

    Comment by Madhu — August 6, 2012 @ 07:37 | Reply

    • Hello Madhu.

Thank You for Your comment and question. These are not hand puppets. They are so called felting things. In Finland felting is quite popular. There are courses in even in smaller villages for felting. One very popular felted thing is to make a felted hat. Everyone can make so individual and unique hat as one’s imagination can create.

We have long traditions also to make worlds’ warmest boots by felting. I have own experiences from my childhood when I loved in a small village. In one of my old post, I presented felted boots, but nobody was not interested in it. Maybe it was due to that, because the product might be made only in Finland.

Here You find two photos from Felted boots (photos 29 and 30):

So nice to read. Thank You. The color is not traditional red indeed.

Have a great start of new week.

  21. Tampere is such a lovely town!
It was a shame that I didn’t make it to there early this year when I was in Helsinki.
Finland in summer looks totally different.
I would love to see the Angry Birds Land one day!
Do you have Moomin Land in Helsinki?🙂

    Comment by London Caller — August 6, 2012 @ 12:03 | Reply

    • Hi London Caller.

Thank You for Your comment and making a question. We have Moomins Theme Park in Naantali, but not in Helsinki.

Here is the link to the town of Naantali.

Naantali pretty as a picture as generally speaking our coastal towns are. In my post there are some Moomins characters.

It is very beautiful town on the Western coast of Finland and travel time is about 2½ hours from Helsinki.

      Happy Monday!

I like these dolls in the windows. Are they from a shop in Tampere?

Thank You. They were in Pyynikki tower in the coffee shop.

  23. Very nice images. Wondering what kind of camera/lenses you use? Beautiful work!

    • Hi Lisa.

I am using old stuff but when I bought them they were quite quality.

      My Camera: Nikon D300.
My lens: Nikkor AF S 18-200 1:3.5-5.6 G ED VR.

I want, but it is very expensive Nikon D800.

Thank You for asking. Happy Saturday!

  24. I love the first photos of the beautiful buildings… the Angry Birds theme park is nice to photograph I think but not for me… I suffer from motion sickness and roller coasters etc turn me a nice shade of green. My one and only experience was quite enough to convince me that I do better safely on terra firma.
The church with the onion domes and tower is breathtaking… well done on the stunning photos!

    • Hi Davinder.

Thank You. Our parks are small and not so “wild” than in Your country. What comes to the town of Tampere, it has much to offer for a visitor. The same applies to other towns in Finland which remain in the shadow of Helsinki (capital). Sigh.

Thank You commenting. Have a great day!

Thank You for Your kind comment. Well, You are right, but personally I do not love the name Angry Birds. My opinion is that the correct name should be Happy Birds!🙂

  33. Some beautiful photos of Tampere – we have visited the city every year that we have been coming to Helsinki and I like it very much. I’ve seen those felt puppets too in that pretty little cafe. On Tuesday you might be interested to see it through my eyes, such a coincidence !!

    • Hi Marion.

Thank You for Your lovely comment. We are moving away from Mikkeli at the end of September to Helsinki. I am quite busy before it and after. This week Helsinki made a decision, which concerns us also in Helsinki.

If You are interested to see what it is, I can send link to You and use Google translation.

      Matti.
