In English:

Reindeer rides and Santa at the Arctic Circle (66º 33″ 46)

How to reach the Arctic Circle?

First You have to visit Rovaniemi. You can fly to Rovaniemi in 1 hour and 20 minutes. I love the night train. Departure is in the evening and arrival next morning. The night train offers sleeping cars. Cabins have for example, toilets and shower. By car the trip takes about 9 hours and 10 minutes, but in winter You have to add 1 or 2 hours depending the road conditions and number of stops. The distance from Helsinki to Rovaniemi is 847 km / 526 mi. The distance from Rovaniemi to the Arctic Circle is 8 km / 5 mi. There is a bus connection to the Arctic Circle and of course taxi.

I have made many winter posts presenting the Arctic Circle and, in this post, I show You many reindeer photos. In one previous post I have told and shown outside photos of Eleanor Roosevelt’s log cabin at the Arctic Circle. Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 – 1962) visited there in 1950 and she was the wife of the President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 – 1945).
I had the possibility to visit it and this is why I have inside photos of the log cabin. Those who want to see photos of Santa, now I have a couple of them at the end of this post. After photos I give links to my previous posts of the Arctic Circle in winter.

  1. The reindeer seem to be very beautiful and majestic animals. Each view you share is like an illustration for a winter book 🙂
I too, enjoy night trains. It is a slower, calmer pace. I wish you and your family a good week!

I am glad that You loved my post and its photos. The Arctic Circle is the place, where people coming abroad should visit and not only to stay in Helsinki. Thank You commenting.

  3. Todella hyvät kuvat Santa Claus Villagesta eli Joulupukin Pajakylästä! Mikä kamera sinulla on? Minä olen kuvannut nykyään vain puhelimella. Siinä ei riitä valovoima.

    Comment by rdegand — April 9, 2019 @ 08:19 | Reply

    • Hei Ritva.

Kiitos kehuista. Arvostan kommenttiasi. Kamerani on jo muutamia vuosia vanha, Nikon D750, täyskenno. Zoomilinssi on Nikkor 28-300 milliä. Olen kokeilut asiaa vessassa ovi hivenen auki.

      Alpine model railway exhibition

      Matti

Thank You leaving so kind words. I always hope that visitors coming abroad visit this place. Many visitors stop at Helsinki and think: this it was. Now I have seen Finland. They even do not visit nearest small towns which shows different sceneries and historic buildings like this:

      Church of Lohja

The trip lasts only one hour from Helsinki.

    Comment by rdegand — April 9, 2019 @ 09:47 | Reply

    • Kiitos taas kommentista.

Minun nykyisessä kamerassa on jo kaksi korttipaikkaa. Matti

Answer to Your wondering is simple. Every time when children get their presents, the load of reindeers is getting lighter and the return journey is therefore fast. 🙂

When being in the army, reason was different for army horses. Army horses returned to the stable very fasy because the dinner table was laid and there was a fear that the food could cool. 🙂

      Have a good day!

      • I love your explanation about the speed of Santa’s sleigh, Matti! I believe you are right. 🙂 Just as I enjoyed your recollection about the horses in the army running to the stable when it was dinnertime. I worked as a ranch hand for a time and remember the same with the horses I took care of. One of the very first lessons I got was not stand far away from the barn door at feeding time. 🙂

Have a good day as well!

Wow, it was nice to hear, that You have similar experiences with horses! 🙂 Thank You telling Your experience.

          Have a wonderful day!

          • Indeed, Matti — it’s lovely to discover another shared interest. Only a couple of my horses would have been suitable for the army, however, because most were afraid of any kind of noise. They would have been a disaster on a battlefield (unless your goal was to leave the battlefield as quickly as possible and run into the barn, ha ha).

            • Hello Heide.

Thank You. Well, can You imagine that we really needed horses in war? I made Google to translate 2 Finnish pages to English for You. Here:

A horse in the war between 1939 and 1945

              Horses in war

              Surprising?

I wish You a very happy upcoming weekend:

              • Thank you for those links, Matti — both very interesting. How sad to see that poor horse with a bullet hole in its neck, however. It breaks my heart when other creatures pay such a horrible price for humans’ conflicts. But happily your part of the world is at peace again and the horses can go back to their quiet lives.

Have a wonderful weekend as well!

Thank You leaving so kind comment and understanding animals’ suffering. When talking about war, We Finns are grateful to Your people! When it was WWII, You sold to us 44 Brewster F2A Buffalos. Although we lost the war, with these fighters the Finnish war pilots gained 447 air victories for 19 losses. In This museum there is still the only one in the world. This war fighter is called Brewster BW372. I have 16 photos showing this plane. Worth of seeing!

Well, next winter, You could take a reindeer ride. Now the season is practically off. Keeping cold outside Your body, then You have to dress in layers. The temperature varies very much. Someday cold and someday warmer. Wool is good, but also some wind stopping cloths. Thank You.

Welcome someday and have a good day!

    • Hello Michèle.

I agree to Your opinion. This winter I participated in this race. I was very excited before it! The experience was fantastic and absolutely worth to experience. I can compare it with my fast driving on German “Autobahnen” at the speed of 242 km/h (my record. This happened long time ago and I’ll never drive so fast. Anyway, I am pleased that tied it once in the life time). My race did not go excellent, but the feeling was awesome. Very enjoyable, incredible! Thank You commenting.
