Day8 (Thursday, September 06, 2013). Distance: Round trip 65.0km / 40.7mi. Temperature: morning 10.0ºC /50.0ºF and evening 14.5ºC / 58.1F. Route: Muonio-Pallastunturi-Muonio.

When waking this morning our feelings were a little bit wistful, because this is our last day in Muonio. We saved for today the most difficult hiking to conquest two Arctic Hills at same time. They are called Taivaskero and Laukkukero. The height of Taivaskero is 801.9 meters / 2631 feet and the height of Laukkukero is about the same.

When starting our hike in the morning, the weather was foggy. We were a little bit afraid if we’ll get lost during our hiking. At times the fog disappeared and returned. When climbing to the top of Taivaskero the fog was so thick that we could not see two route marks at once. When finally at the top there was a surprise waiting for us. There was a monument in which it was told that it was just here, where the Olympic flame for the Helsinki Olympics held in 1952, was lit. I did not know and even not Anja although she worked many years for Finnish Olympic Committee.

Before hiking to the top of Laukkukero, we ate our packed lunch and coffee. The route was in many places difficult to walk, because it was seriously stony. Finally the fog disappeared and we could see magnificent scenery around us. There were many roaming reindeers near to the visitor center. We gotta to shoot photos of them.

The length of this hike was only 9 km / 5.6mi and it took from us to walk 3.5 hours. During 6 days according to Anja’s bookkeeping, we walked 50km / 31mi in total. It is not much, but there were so much to see at this Arctic Hill region. This is not the end of our road trip. There will be two more posts presenting our home trip to our home in the south.

Día 8 (Jueves, 06 de septiembre 2013). Distancia: 65,0 kilometros viaje redondo / 40.7mi. Temperatura: 10.0 º C por la mañana / 50,0 º F y por la noche 14.5 º C / 58.1F. Ruta: Muonio-Pallastunturi-Muonio.

Havia muitas renas desambulando perto perto do centro do visitante.

Although there were still more people around it most probably was a bit irritating and perhaps frightening to have such a limited view. Not visibility zero but still. …

    Comment by キース — May 17, 2014 @ 11:59 | Reply

    • Hello キース.

Thank You making Your comment and questions. My post presents landscapes far in the North, beyond the Arctic Circle and there no more real forests. Trees which we can see on lower landscapes are dwarf and seem like bushes. When climbing higher and higher all trees vanish slowly. The limit is called tree line.

Reindeers are very kind, shy animals and they are not aggressive. They are not noisy and man has no need to be afraid of them. Reindeers which roam freely have some kind of “leader” is called bellwether. All other reindeers follow the bellwether. When hiking in fells man can easily hear the beautiful and clear sound of the bell.

So if You someday think to visit these Arctic areas, do it without any fear. Tell to me if You someday decide to do so! You are welcome.
