Think about this: Free entrance to Winter Garden! In our world this sounds incredible. Jacob Julius af Lindfors, who built it in 1893, wished that there always should be free access to the garden. The town of Helsinki has respected this wish – my hat. Winter Garden is an exotic oasis for visitors. There are up to 200 plants in three different rooms. After admiring all the plants, it is nice to sit in its atmospheric café inside.

It was Christmas time, December 26, 2019, when we visited there. This meant that we could see those plants which are blooming at time. Mainly we saw Cactuses and of course, Christmas decorations. I have shown some outside photos about Winter Garden in my post Helsinki walk1. Link is after photos.

How to reach Winter Garden?

Its address is Hammarskjökdintie 1.Well, most nice way is to walk from the center of Helsinki alongside the park of Töölönlahti. It is beautiful walk, less than 2km / 1.2mi. The tram number 1, passes near to it.

Su dirección es Hammarskjökdintie 1. Bueno, la mejor manera es caminar desde el centro de Helsinki junto al parque de Töölönlahti. Es hermosa caminata, a menos de 2 km. El tranvía número 1 pasa cerca de él.

C’était le temps de Noël, le 26 décembre 2019, lorsque nous y sommes allés. Cela signifiait que nous pouvions voir ces plantes qui fleurissaient à ce moment. que c’est plaisant tous ces personnages, lutins et animaux au milieu des fleurs! j’adore!
et ça ressemble un peu au dernier billet que j’ai posté avec fleurs et animaux 😉
notamment mon orchidée cymbidium que je viens de mettre à l’extérieur de la maison (la même que dans tes photos, me semble-t-il)

  Ça va? Quel plaisir de constater que vous avez remarqué quelque chose de familier parmi ces fleurs. Nous avons eu des orchidées pendant l’été à l’intérieur de notre maison. Il y a de nombreuses années, lorsque nous avions une petite résidence secondaire à Oulu, nous la transportions dans notre voiture (625 km Helsinki – Oulu aller-retour) cette orchidée. Elle nous a dit qu’elle aimait le voyage! 🙂

Hello! It’s a big botanical garden of 200 kinds. Christmas decorations are great. Unfortunately in Japan, all botanical gardens are closed due to corona problems. Have a good day!

A wonderful botanical garden with 200 kinds of plants is good. The plant in the third photo is called crab cactus in Japan and it is also in my garden. Nowadays, Japan is requesting to refrain from going out as a countermeasure against corona, so I have not gone far beyond my home.

  Thank you leaving your kind words. We had many years ago some cacti in our home when living on countryside, but now we do not have. Yes, there many restrictions yet in my country and obeying is not easy, but we obey. We stay inside, some walking max one hour in a day and twice in the week for shopping. As you know, most of the population refrains from traveling or going outdoors. Hence, many of our nature centres etc are closed. But, I am happy to view this special garden through your photos. Thank you for sharing! I hope you and all your family stay well.

We would love to make some road trips, but we stay in our home and make only some daily walks and shopping twice a week. Our days are filled by some hobbies, reading and TV. A reminder that deserts can have great beauty. I’ve spent a lot of time in the deserts of the southwestern United Staes. They have beauty year around but it becomes even more so in the spring when the flowers are blooming. Even Death Valley turns into a garden. Thanks for sharing. –Curt

  Thank you commenting. I have not been in the deserts, but I have some touch with them. When I was schoolboy in the 50’s, then I ordered a magazine called Arizona Highways. It was full of stunning photos of desert flowers. I still have those magazines in my home and have read them again. Another nearly a concrete meeting was when we visited Yosemite National park and drove to Nevada side continuing to Las Vegas. This happened in Aug 4, 1998 – Aug 8, 1998.

      Very nice that You know Arizona Highways. No, we didn’t. We were on the road with my wife, my daughter and my granddaughter and me. I have heard about it and at those days it was told that man must be well equipped to drive thru it. I do not remember for example the recommendation of water per person. The only good memory which is still in my mind, that there was a prison in the desert. My daughter and granddaughter pressed us to drive to Las Vegas “as soon as possible” to Vegas that they could start sun tanning by the pool. 🙂 Thank you.

        Thank you for your information. Wow, so many miles! In Helsinki, there was an American book shop and its owner spent one month in every different state every year. He told me, that he tries to visit every state in his life and drive around. It was just he who gave me free a huge map which we used on our road trip.

How wonderful that you can enjoy these tropical plants during winter! They are quite familiar to me, as they grow outside in Oaxaca, Mexico, where we spend 6 months every year. Many of us have pots, large and small (even tiny) that hold these and a seemingly endless variety of succulents and cactus! After several years, sometimes one will surprise us by producing a beautiful flower. I also like very much the Santa and other woodland creatures!

I’m such a fan of cacti, and there are some beautiful examples there. Many I’ve never seen.I enjoyed seeing all the little “additions,” too. The squirrel especially made me smile; I like squirrels as much as cacti. I hope you’re keeping well — thanks so much for sharing such lovely photos!

This looks like such a beautiful place to visit. One of the photos if the cactus with the purple flowers is a cactus we call the Christmas cactus in our family. My grandma loved this plant and would get one every Christmas, but her flowers were red. The garden gnomes are so cute.

  Oh, how praising comment you wrote! Thank you. Thank you telling about Golden Week. I had to search it from Internet and I found it interesting. Although I have some regular Japanese commentators, we never have talk about this. We have, I guess, same kind of restrictions, than elsewhere, but with two weeks, children can start their schooldays in schools.
  
  To stay mainly indoors, is not nice. We have had possibility to walk in a day one hour and in a nearby forest, go for food shopping, keeping distances with other people. That’s all.
