Acting like apes / Actuando como monos / Agissant comme des singes

Helsinki photos / fotos

In English:

This summer 2011 there was small International Sand Sculpting Competition in Helsinki. Its theme was “Acting like apes” and the place was Helsinki zoo. Helsinki zoo (Korkeasaari in Finnish) is situated on an island. So the place for this competition was selected in a right place.

Helsinki zoo is reached easily by ferries or by a bridge which connects it to the mainland. I start my series of photos showing what I saw on my way to zoo on board of sightseeing boat which departed from the center of Helsinki from Market square.

Visit the competition with me.

  1. What? No organgutans? Those are my faves!

Say, I can relate to the ferries and to the sand festival. We have both here in Port Aransas, TX. But what we don’t have are big buildings or anything on a grand scale, since our town of about 3,500 consists of mostly small wooden structures and lots of beautiful beaches.

Maybe you’ll come visit one of these days soon?

    • Hi Deli.

So nice to hear. We have one small town in which there are sculptured sand statues every year. Once I made a post of Sand Statues having three themes from years 2008, 2009 and 2010. This year I have also visited there with my camera, but I’ll make a post much later.

I guess that Your small town must be gorgeous.

Thank You for Your visit and nice comment.

  2. The sand sculptures are incredibly well done! As I looked at them the thought kept running through my mind that it’s sad that they were not done in a medium that was permanent. How nice they would be on permanent display at the zoo!

I was also fascinated by the array of boats that you photographed. They are so beautiful and interesting! Your whole trip that day must have been wonderful!

    • Hi Montucky.

Thank You. I am glad that You liked my “monkey” photos as from those nearby Helsinki port. During next autumn I’ll publish more Helsinki photos.

Maybe You noticed that first prize was won by Steve Lester from the States.

      Happy Saturday!

  3. The buildings along the waterfront are beautiful and you did a good job showing them at a tough time of day to photograph. I want to tour that yacht! Wow!

The artists had a lot of fun with the theme. Love the opera singer?

    • Hello Scott.

Thank You for Your visit on my site and leaving Your nice comment.

That yacht is called Utopia. Here I found some photos from Utopia around the world. Some of those buildings are famous here. For example in the first photo there is Presidential Palace. President was not home, because no flag seen.

      Happy Saturday!

  4. The artist who did these sand sculptures are very, very good. I especially enjoyed the facial expressions on some of the apes. I used to live near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and attended the annual sand sculpture exhibition they have, but I don’t remember seeing anything quite as elaborate as these.

I also enjoyed the views of the city and harbor that you took on your way to the zoo.

    • Hi George.

Thank You. When I planned this post I was thinking what to present – only art or also photos during my trip to the zoo. Now I see after many comments that I selected right.

      Happy Saturday!

  5. A delightful photo series! I love all those different ferries, and the sand sculptures are just wonderful! My it has been a long time since I have been on a ferry much less seen one. The sand sculptures are so creative and took painstaking time for the details—excellent!🙂 Have a great weekend.

    • Hello Anna.

Thank You Anna. So nice to read that You liked this set of photos presenting sand art and a small glimpse of the port of Helsinki. In Helsinki we have very heavy sea traffic to Estonia, Sweden, Russia, Poland and Germany. When we are going to Germany we use ferries to take our car with us.

      Happy week-end!

  6. Your pictures make me want to hop on the nearest ferry and go for a cruise…such a beautiful variety of images in your post today Matti! What are those big white buildings at the start, they are so imposing and elegant!
    Have a lovely weekend

    • Hello Convictstock.

It was so nice to read Your comment, thank You. Cruising is great, even a small one. After two weeks from now in Friday, I’ll present a midsummer cruise on a lake in Finland. So, just wait for it.🙂

After that there will be three week’s break of my blogging.

About those building. In the second photo there is to be seen from the right Presidential palace, City hall and small glimpse of Embassy of Sweden. In photo # three is seen better.

      Happy week-end!

  9. LOL! – a lot of fun here. We have some exhibitions of sand-sculptures here too – but I have never seen one of those – yet (and they are only shown for a short period!)

    • Hi Truels.

I love wooden, sand, ice and snow art. It is every time a great pleasure to see how people create things.

Thank You for Your visit and comment.

  10. Wow, it is so cool to have a zoo on an island!
It does make sense because the animals cannot run away from the zoo! Ha!
I saw an article about a leopard on loose in an Indian village today.

The sand sculptures are truly an eye opener.
I have only seen them by the sea.
In the zoo, that’s my first time.

    Comment by London Caller — July 25, 2011 @ 00:48 | Reply

    • Hello London Caller.

Well, You are so right that the zoo on an island is great, but sometimes it happens contrary. Once a mouse swim to the zoo island.🙂 It happens, it happens. I consider that sand art is art like any art and that is why I personally like these and besides, they are not poorly made.

      Thank You commenting.
