Unknown Helsinki3 / Helsinki desconocida3 / Helsinki Inconnu3 / Helsinki desconhecida3

In English:

Laajasalo – the biggest island of Helsinki and Helsinki’s 49th district in eastern Helsinki

Part 3.

Visiting Laajasalo (Degerö in Swedish) is easy. Take metro which goes to Itäkeskus or Myllypuro. Hop off at Herttoniemi subway station. Walk out of subway station and take some of these buses: 84 – Gunillankallio, 85 – Jollas , 88 and 88B – Kaitalahti and Kruunuvuorenranta, 89 – Yliskylä. There are other bus routes, but I suggest to You these routes. You can hop off anytime or at final stop. Where You decide to hop off, start walking. As soon as possible, choose a path. Everywhere on the island, there are cycling and walking paths. Selecting path, they give to You an excellent way to explore the island. Getting lost – no, because every path lead to some road and on roads there is traffic. When returning all the busses are marked with sign Herttoniemi.

The nature varies from well-kept parks to rocks and small forests. The building style vary from apartment house to detached houses. There are also semidetached houses. The architecture varies depending in which decades they are built. Some houses have beautiful gardens. The best of Laajasalo is its nature. Depending where Your walking tour takes, You can imagine that You are in the jungle on some areas. We love taking our walking tours wandering along the seaside paths. The island is not big, because You walk from the farthest place in an hour and ten minutes to Herttoniemi metro station, but enough big to explore its beauty and variety.

In the middle of Laajasalo, there is a place called Yliskylä, bus 89, the quite new two-storied shopping center called Saari (island). It is nice place where You can enjoy in all peace your coffee with some yummy. I suggest!. It offers of course everything for residents. Coffee shops and restaurants are of high quality and they offer a nice place to sniff the atmosphere on the island. If You want walk from Saari shopping center to Herttoniemi, it takes about 20 minutes walk. Well, there is a huge park, which I recommend, on the way and it is worth for a visit. Everywhere on the island there are also rentable city bikes.

In this post, I am interested in to know what You see in two last photos.

Welcome and start Your adventure!

Parte 3.

Sounds good. Sodankylä is small place, but during the festival there must be great fun. There are two wooden churches, of which the old one is from 1689! If You have time, then climb to the top of Arctic hill of Kiilopää. It is easy to climb, but worth to visit the hill top.

      Maybe this inspires You:

  18. As others have pointed out, it is “clearly” a dinosaur. I can see from your pictures why Finns settled in Wisconsin when they came to the new world. Some of your pictures look like home to me (and others like Up North, where my parents grew up and there are more Finns than down here).

The parks and forests on the one hand, infrastructure, shopping possibilities and perfect location of even a lot of new built houses on the other hand.
(It’s therefore a bit sad to remember in this regard what you told about the reasons for your decision to move in autumn ….)

Such beautiful photos! Thank you for showing more of Laajasalo in this 3rd part of your series about the “Unkown Helsinki”!
