  1. What a gorgeous church! We love looking around churches, and we saw loads of beautiful ones when we were in Scandinavia. 🙂

    • Hi Dixie.

Very nice to read that You also take Your time to visit churches. I have photographed about 430 churches in Finland. They are situated in small towns and villages. My favorite churches are wooden. I love different kind of art found inside churches and on graveyards. Thank You leaving Your comment.

      Have a great day!

      ありがとうございます

In my mind also. This church is not typical church in Finland. I was amazed about the huge amount of faces painted. If You see my comment, then take a look at my post presenting the Monastery of New Valamo. It is my favorite site for visits.

  4. You know in my country we have plenty of churches…
Most of them are very old and completely different from the one you show in your beautiful photos.
I like this style , unfamiliar but gorgeous!

    • Hi Anna.

Yes I know it, because we have visited in many of them. You are lucky when having stone churches, but in Finland there have been huge amount of fires during our history in which old historic churches have burnt. There are villages in which two old churches have been burnt by flash of lightning, but man build every time new ones. One reason more to fires was our cold weather in winter, because man had to heat churches heavily. You can imagine how much firewood churches need when outside temperature is -35ºC / -31ºF.

If You too took a look some of my link, so You noticed that this one differs from other Orthodox churches in Finland. The one in Helsinki is awesome!Thank You.

      Have a wonderful afternoon.

  6. Amazing interior! You would never expect this when looking at the church from the outside – unless, of course, all orthodox churches are as beautiful and ornate? I’ve never been in one, so don’t know. Next time I come across one I’ll make sure I go in to have a look around though.

    Comment by Mrs K — October 9, 2014 @ 14:12 | Reply

    • Hi Mrs K.

Thank You. Yes contrast between outside and inside is amazing. I always visit churches if possible. Everywhere churches offer something to everyone, at least art.

      Have a wonderful day!

      Comment by Sartenada — October 9, 2014 @ 14:23 | Reply

  7. Hi Matti,
Although I was prepared as you already mentioned in your text the existing difference between the look from exterior and the actual look inside, I didn’t expect such an ornamentation, such colours and so many mural paintings! Sometimes very old churches – and Catholic churches in particular – present this magnificence (almost a bit exuberant),but this Orthodox church inaugurated in 1957 has a more modern look. The blue is more lively, it’s all less dark, less sinister … The motives of the mural paintings are often the well-known “old” ones, but the painting style is different
    Quite impressive! Thanks for showing!

    Have a nice day!

    • Hello Tiny.

Thank You for Your comment. Welcome again to Finland. The weather varies so much in autumn that weather forecasts varies from day to day. Today in Mikkeli the weather is 8 centigrade in the morning and some drizzle. Real winter is rare in the South in October. In Lapland it has been snowing during some days. I find lovely our dark evenings to sit outdoors. Cold is only matter of clothes, You know it.

    • Hi Letizia.

For the first time when I realized that people stand in Orthodox churches was In Helsinki many years ago. The church is outside, not so beautiful (my opinion), but inside gorgeous. Thank You commenting.

      Have a wonderful day!

      • Yes, I agree, from the outside I did not realize it would be so beautiful in the inside. A nice surprise!

  31. There certainly are a lot of faces on the interior of this church, but the windows and murals are absolutely beautiful. Your photos are marvelous.

  32. I bet tourists come from everywhere to see this church, Sartenada! Enough faces/saints to sink a ship…or to keep it afloat! 🙂

  33. What a stunning interior. I love going to churches for the architecture and symbolism, and if I absolutely had to go to a service I don’t think I’d cope very well if I had to stand for the whole thing! Great photos, Matti.

    • Hi Hayley.

Well, think about Fitness! People visiting Orthodox churches must be in excellent conditions after standing long time.
