Forestry Harvester in work / Cosechadora forestal en el trabajo / Abatteuse dans le travail / Cosechadora forestal no trabalho

In English:

It was early morning in July 2008 when a forestry harvester appeared just behind the fence of our garden in nearby forest.

As You see in my photos, it is the modern way to cut, to remove branches, pile up them etc, all this done by machines which are computer-controlled, in 30 seconds. My photos show how it cuts tree trunks and chips are flying around when this machine works. Now our nearby forest got a “new look” and during summer we got more sunlight for our small flower garden. In 2012 we sold our house and moved to Mikkeli.

  1. That does the work of many men, so quickly! Is the timber used for building, furniture or chipping?

    • Hi Misa.

These kinds of machines are very efficient. In our historic day, all this was done by men and horses – even in winter. In winter men lived many weeks away from their homes and worked every day. They lived in huge forest cabins together. This sentence is from Wikipedia: “Forest harvesters were mainly developed in Sweden and Finland and today do practically all of the commercial felling in these countries”.

Have a great start of new week!

    • Hello Terry.

Thank You. These machines are developed in Sweden and Finland. I guess that You know in historic days there were working in Canada and in U.S.A. a lot of Finnish loggers. From those days began the word “lokari” to Finnish language and the origin word was logger. Sometimes we can hear from our radio old Finnish songs telling the life of loggers in “America”. So, after those days times have changed. 🙂

Have a great start of new week!

Me gusta muchisima tu comentario.

Merci d’avoir faite votre commentaire.

      Belle journée.

Thank You. Yes, we’ll create memories in our new home town called Mikkeli. It is nice town with lakes here and there. After living nearly twenty years beside the forest and staring at the pines, we were tired of it. Now we stare the Lake Saimaa which is beautiful.

    • Hi Alcessa.

Thank You leaving Your comment. Well, this forest is owned by local alcoholic factory called Altia. Earlier its name was Alko which refers to Alcoholic. Maybe You have tasted Finnish Vodka called Finlandia Vodka, if so then it is from that factory. 🙂 The place is in Rajamäki. This forestry machine is efficient indeed.

Have a great start of new week!

  13. They removed quite a lot of trees – obviously within a rather short time! And they call these machines “forestry harvester”? I noticed that you used this term for your tags. That sounds nicely. And I like that they call their type of machine “beaver”. ^^
You lived in a rather nice house and beautiful surroundings, Matti. Did you ever feel sorry for having sold your house and for having moved to Mikkeli?

    Comment by ladyfromhamburg — August 17, 2014 @ 21:42 | Reply

    • Hi Michèle.

Thank You for Your comment and making a question. First the photo. In Finland there is a habit that houses on countryside are photographed from airplanes. This photo is summer photo and in it we do not have yet asphalt. We had also winter photo.

Anja had beautiful flower garden and sometimes I’ll present photos from her flower collection at backyard. We are not really felt sorry, but in the air there is sometimes nostalgic. We stared at the pine forest nearly twenty years and someday we decided to change landscape. Our new home is Mikkeli. From our balcony we can see Lake Saimaa which lies only about 20 meters from our balcony. We drink our “afternoon” coffees in balcony and admire the blue lake on which boats pass.

Have a great start of new week!

  14. The noise must have been deafening! I am impressed that you got so close to take the detailed photos of the big machine in action. The harvester seems to be able to take out a tree without destroying the other trees and the land around the tree being harvested. So much better and kinder to the environment than the clear cutting that is often used in the States. I’d never heard of such a machine, so I found your post very interesting. Thanks, Matti. I hope you have a good week.

I am glad that You checked this post of mine and saw how forests are managed by machines. When I was young, I had only a saw, an ax and a wood-cutting hand tool to limb branches. Felling was hard work, and even dangerous, because I had to be careful that tree does not fall on me.
