  1. That would be really fun to see! By far, I like he carving of the three cubs the best! That one has the spirit of the bears that I see here.

    • Hello Terry.

Thank You starting New Year By commenting my first post. There were participants from many countries and I cannot say from which country the carver of three cubs came. Anyway to see all these it was cool. My personal favorite is the bear wearing “Native American Headdress”. In next post I have more details about it.

      Happy New Year!

  4. The sculpture of the bear is your avatar. I love it with a face with the amiability. In today’s Miki-shi, it snows. It is unusual on New Year’s Day.
I remember a musical instrument called the kantele when I say Karelia. I play it, too.
    It be a good year.

    • Hello Medaka4841.

Oh, I am surprised that You know Kantele which is our national instrument and that You play it also!!! You must see my old post in which Salla plays 39 strings Kantele inside the church of Loviisa. There is also my short video showing Salla’s play! Listen to the beautiful melody!

  9. Great carvings! It’s wonderful to see the creativity and skill of the artists, who I assume used chain saws! It was impossible to choose a favorite, but because of the detail, I’m leaning to the bear with the head dress.Who won the competition? I also enjoyed looking back at your older carving posts, and definitely my favorite of these is #1, the wooden outside art.
Happy New Year to you and your wife!

Thank You leaving Your kind comment. I searched the winner and it was the one presenting three cubs. The first link which mentioned was photographed also in Ilomantsi only a couple of kilometers from the place where this competition happened. It is my favorite post, because there is so much humor in its statues.

  13. What a selection of different bears! Quite impressive how large some of them are (seeing Anja standing beside one of these bears)!
I really couldn’t decide which participant had to do the most difficult work or who was the most creative guy who should have won the competition – but my favourite sculpture is the one with the little ice bears playing together.
I just have started to have a look at your older posts mentioned just below your today’s article. Very interesting! Thanks for mentioning, Matti! — Michèle

  16. Thank you for this posting. I particularly enjoyed your photographs of the bears. My grandmother’s maiden name was Karhu, which I understand means – bear- in Finnish . She came from Isokyro to live in the United States in 1896 at the age of nine. My grandfather also came from Finland but his family name was changed by his grandfather This makes it almost impossible to do any genealogical research.

The lighter colored bears reminded me of my young relatives who are Inuit and live in Nunavut. My nephew married an Inuit and together they had four boys.

    Comment by Claire Lindell — January 1, 2015 @ 21:25 | Reply

    • Hello Claire.

Thank You for Your interesting comment!!! I know Isokyrö because few years ago we visited there seeking some possible relatives on its graveyards. There are two nice churches in Isokyrö which I photographed. Yes, indeed the name Karhu means bear! Bears are very popular in Finland and that’s why it has many nicknames like. “Kontio, otso mesikämmen, nalle”. What is interesting when talking about Isokyrö is it, that the War Memorial of the new church presents Bear!!!

Here is my photo of it in my old post:

      Memorials.

  33. Wow, they are all great! It is difficult to choose, I like the playing cubs, the ones that look like totem poles and the one with the head-dress. Thank you for sharing.

  34. It is amazing! I have visited Sortavala in Karelia and Lamberg island in 1979. Had an accident in the air on my flight home. Some memories:)

    • Hello Inesephoto.

Wow, You have been in Sortavala! Probably You know that in WW II, we lost it. Sortavala is very near to Ilomantsi, the town in which the bear carving was kept. Thank You commenting my post!

Maybe You could compare our trip to Karelia from my old post>

      Return to the roots.

Have a great start of this New Year!

      • Thank you! I just checked, it is so interesting, i will return and read thoroughly. Russia is notorious for annexing other nation’s land… .but I am glad that there is no industrial objects built and the forests are more or less preserved. May be one day this land will go back to your country…

        • Referring to the last sentence, many of us hope so. There was a culture which is still living in our memories, art, songs etc. Maybe this is cool example:

          Church scale models from matches.

          Have a nice day!
